A copy of a speech given by Legatee Bert Davis at Glenburn Hall on Anzac Day 2005. It tells the story of his grandfather Lieutenant William Edwin Davis who served in the Boer War and then was killed on Gallipoli. Also William's son, who also enlisted in the first World War in France and married a Welsh nurse and returned to Australia and were Bert's parents. There was also a story of William's widow Mrs Maud Davis who was involved with the War Widows Guild and was one to the ladies approached by the founding Legatees when they wanted to established Boys Classes in the 1920s. This cup was awarded at a sports day held in 1937 by the Second Cavalry Division of the Victorian Light Horse regiments (The 4th/19th Light Horse Regiment was active in the Warrnambool region at that time). The Victorian Light Horse had both mounted infantry and cavalry units and was the successor in the early 1900s to the Victorian Mounted Rifles founded by Colonel Tom Price in 1886. Eight mounted contingents from Australia served in the Boer War and the Australian Light Horse served with distinction in World War One. The Australian Light Horse, as official military units, ceased to exist in the 1940s. It is not known to whom this cup was awarded in 1937. This cup is of considerable interest as a memento of the activities of the Victorian Light Horse regiments in the 1930s, possibly in the Warrnambool district.This is a silver-plated cup on a circular Bakelite stand. This book was used by Orbost Shire Council at the "Back to Orbost" celebrations in 1937 and again in 1963. The item was donated to Orbost & District Historical society from P.R.O.V. as a Place of Deposit (POD) item for safe keeping by a local history group or museum. The book was presented to the president, Jacob Perry, as a token of esteem and in appreciation of his interest and services to the movement. Jacob Perry was an Orbost farmer. Born 1874. Died 1950. He was a Boer War veteran , 4th Victorian Imperial Bushmen. He was a shire councillor and worker for school affairs. The book was used again on Friday, 8th March to Saturday, 16th March 1963.This item is a record of an early Orbost celebration and a useful reference tool.A green covered hard back visitors' book with a red spine and gold lettering on the front cover. Henry Colville was educated at Eton and then entered the Grenadier Guards in 1870. He was appointed Aide-de-Camp to General the Honorable Sir Leicester Smyth, commanding the forces in South Africa in 1880. Colville had expeditions and was mentioned in despatches on numerous occasions. In 1893 he succeeded Sir Gerald Portal as Commissioner for Uganda, received the Central Africa Medal, made Knight Commander of the Order of St Micael and St George and received the second class Order of the Brilliant Star of Zanzibar. In 1898 Eyre Macdonnell Stewart Crabbe had been promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and became commanding officer of the 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards. In 1899 he led the Battalion to South Africa following the outbreak of the Second Boer War. At the battle of Belmont he was wounded but able to continue and attend the battle of Magersfontein. He was wounded again in 1900 when ambushed at Karee Siding but a month later was back in action. In 1901 he fought against Fouche and Kritzinger, and defeated Van der Merwe and Hildebrand. Cochrane was commissioned into the Life Guards in 1870 and promoted to lieutenant the following year and captain in 1878. He served in the Nile Expedition, the Desert March and the Relief of Khartoum. Appointed Commanding Officer of 2nd Life Guards in 1895. Served in the Second Boer War and appointed Commander of the Mounted Brigade,part of the South Natal Field Force. Participated in the Relief of Ladysmith in 1900. Appointed General Officer Commanding Militia of Canada and was there for two years. Appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. Appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1901 and in 1907 knighted as a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Cecil Maygar, VC, DSO, VD (27 May 1868 – 1 November 1917) was an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was awarded the VC for facilitating the rescue of a dismounted man while under severe rifle fire in 1902 during the Second Boer War. Lieutenant Leslie Maygar served with the 5th Contingent Victorian Mounted Rifles in south Africa during the Boer War (1899-1902). He was awarded the Victoria cross for heroism . Maygar served with the 15th Light Horse (CMF) in the period 1902-1914 and at the outbreak of WWI (1914-1918) he was promoted to Major and appointed as a Squadron Commander with 4th Light Horse (AIF). He served at Gallipoli then was promoted Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Commanding Officer 8th Light Horse. He was serving in this capacity at Beersheba in October 1917 when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft. Maygar died of wounds sustained in the attack. The portrait was presented by the legal profession ot the Court in 1946. It would appear to have been commissioned at the time of Chief Justice Mann's retirement. Charles Wheeler, had won the Archibald prize in 1933 and was the head of the art gallery schools during World War two. Chief Justice Sir Frederick Mann (1869-1958) studied the law and worked at the Crown Law Department before his stint in the Army during the Boer War. After the war, he practised as a barrister, mainly working in the common law and equity area including appearences in the High Court on constitutional matters. He was appointed to the bench in 1919 along with William Schutt, to help remedy a shortfall in the number of judges on the Bench, after measures of economy during World War One. He became Chief Justice in 1935 following the retirement of Sir William Irvine, and retired in 1944.The portrait is of interest because of whom it portrayed, it is a well executed work by a well known artist of the period.Half Length portriat painting in oils of Sir Frederick Mann, seated and balancing a book on his knee. Frederick Roberts was the son of Field Marshall Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts. At the age of 27 he went with the King's Rifles to the Second Boer War. During battle he, with two officers tried to assist and save guns when the detachments serving the guns had all become casualties or been driven away. While doing this Roberts fell badly wounded and 2 days later died. Commander-in-Chief Redvers Buller recommended Roberts for the Victoria Cross. Confirmation of the award made after his death. Roberts and his father were one of only three father son pairs to win the Victoria Cross. The Kew RSL is located in "Wilton" House, 63 Cotham Road. The RSL was established on January 1st 1920, later joining with the Hawthorn RSL. In November 1931, Cr. C.R. Parry organised the reformation of the Kew Sub Branch and its first president was Brig-Gen Pat McGlin, a veteran of the Boer War and the First World War. On July 17th 1932, the club rooms first opened on Army land at the corner of High Street and Highbury Grove. In late November 1948, the Kew RSL bought the "Wilton" house from the Kew City Council for £10,067, opening seven years later in July 1955. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. In 1902 a badge was urgently sought for the Australian contingents raised after Federation for Service in South Africa during Boer War. Probably the most widely-accepted version of the origin of this badge is that which attributes the selection of its design to a British Officer, Major General Sir Edward Hutton, KCB, KCMG, the newly appointed commander-in-chief of the Australian Forces. He had earlier recieved as a gift from Brigadier General Joseph Gordon, a military acquaintance of long standing, a "Trophy of Arms" comprising mounted cut and thrust swords and triangular Martini Henri bayonets arranged in a semicircle around a brass crown. To Major General Hutton the shield was symbolic of the co-ordination of the Naval and Military Forces of the Commonwealth. The rising sun badge has been worn by Australian soldiers since 1902. Thus it is a symbol that links soldiers across several generations, and across many conflicts and peace-keeping missions. Its symbolism is at once warlike and hopeful, as it incorporates an array of bayonets to create the form of the rising sun. At the centre sits a crown, symbol of a soldier's allegiance to the Australian nation and the British monarch. Small bronze coloured rising sun badge from a slouch hat. Paul Sanford Methuen became deputy adjutant-general in South Africa in 1888. He was promoted to major general in 1890 and succeeded his father as 3rd baron in 1891. He was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1898 and was given the command of the 1st Division on the outbreak of the Second Boer War. He suffered both defeats and successes during the war - the greatest defeat was at the Battle of Magersfontein, one of three defeats in "Black Week", which led to the dispatch of Lord Roberts to South Africa. A copy of the original photo held by J. Norris of Butcher St, Echuca, of the P.S Oscar W towing the P.S Gem from Mildura to Swan Hill believed to be in 1930. This towing only got as far as the Bitch 'n Pups. The Oscar W was built in Echuca in 1908 by Captain Franz Wallin, who was also it's first owner. He named it after his son Oscar who had been killed in the Boer War. In 1919 he sold the Oscar W to the Permewan Wright Co. In 1942 it was sold to Captain G. Ritchie who took it to Goolwa. After a busy working life along the Murray River, the P.S Oscar W returned to Goolwa in 1988 where it remains to this day. This picture is significant as it shows a large paddle steamer towing another large paddle steamer in a high river. It shows the river level in 1930, as well as how collaborative life on the river needed to be in those circumstances. For his achievements in the Battle of Omdurman and Sudan in 1898, Kitchener was made Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, becoming an Earl - qualifying peer of mid-rank. Kitchener was a senior British Army officer and colonial administrator who won notoriety for his campaigns, most especially his scorched earth policy against the Boers and his establishment of concentration camps during the Second Boer War. Awards he received include: Knight of the Order of the Garter; Knight of the Order of St Patrick; Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath; Member of the Order of Merit; Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India; Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George; Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire. Taken in 1908, the photograph depicts a long line of Australian soldiers riding atop horses. They marching down Ford St, Beechworth. This group were part of the Beechworth Mounted Rifles; a voluntary detachment of the Australian Light Horse Militia. This unit consisted of soldiers from the Euroa, Longwood, Violet Town, Benalla, Thoona, Wangaratta, Rutherglen, and Beechworth Detachments of Victorian Rifles, and subsequently formed into the 8th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles). The Victorian Mounted Rifles was gazetted as a volunteer formation on 2 December 1885 with the aim of consolidating all the disparate calvary units dispersed across Victoria into a coordinated and single administrative and military unit. The Victorian Mounted Rifles fought in the Second Boer War (1889 - 1902), although it is unknown if the group depicted in this image were involved in the conflict.The photograph is historically significant due to its connection to the Australian Light Horse Regiment, specifically of the Victorian Mounted Rifles. This unit retains a special significance within Victorian culture, as there is a memorial and monument - erected in 1903 - honouring their service on St. Kilda Road in Melbourne. This bag belonged to Harry Perry and was donated by his son Trevor Perry. Harry Perry was the son of Jacob Perry, Shire Councillor, a farmer and Boer war veteran. Harry Perry's father, Jacob Perry, was a member of the inaugural Orbost Bowling Club. The Bowling Club was founded in 1929, by a group of farmers and businessmen. They set about providing a sporting icon for the town. Six rinks were constructed on the current site using horse drawn scoops and drags. The "Back to Orbost” 1937 book, describes the greens as "a bit rough for the first two seasons but now compare favourably with most country greens". Funds for the construction were raised by the issue of debentures at £5 each, and subscriptions were £1/1s/0d ($2.10). (info. During the Second Boer War Hildyard was posted to South Africa and commanded 2nd Brigade from 1899 to 1900. He saw active service at the Battle of Colenso. Hidyard remained in South Africa to command the 5th Division from 1900 to 1901 and took part in the Battle of the Tugela Heights. He was appointed as Director-General of Military Education from 1903 to 1904 and lieutenant general on the Imperial General Staff commanding the troops in South Africa from 1904 to 1905. He was General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, South Africa from 1905 to 1908. He retired in 1911. British forces in the Second Boer war were initially outgunned by the long range Boer artillery. Captain Percy Scott of HMS Terrible first improvised timber static siege mountings for two 4-7 guns from the Cape Town coastal defences, to counter the Boers' "Long Tom" gun during the Siege of Ladysmith in 1899-1900. Captain Scott then improvised a travelling carriage for 4-7 inch guns removed from their static coastal or ship mountings to provide the army with a heavy field gun. These improvised carriages lacked recoil buffers and hence in action drag shoes and attachment of the carriage by cable to a strong point in front ofthe gun were necessary to control the recoil. The Maygar Club was the Other Ranks club at firstly Buna Barracks Albury, later at North Bandiana and currently at Latchford Barracks Bonegilla. Kekewich commanded the 1st Battalion of the Royal Regiment (North Lancashire) in the Second Boer War. He commanded the garrison in Kimberley during the siege and successful defence of the town. At this time he came into conflict with Cecil Rhodes who persuaded John French, commanding the relief force, to replace Kekewich with another officer as commander of the garrison. Kekewich was promoted to colonel for his services. In 1901 he was wounded in an attack by General de la Rey near Moedwil but soon recuperated. Kekewich was in charge during the British victory at the Battle of Rooiwai, the last major battle during the war. He stayed in South Africa until peace had been signed and then returned to England. Steel screw steamer launched 1889 at Newcastle on Tyne by Palmers & Co., built for Archibald Currie and Partners - the Currie Line of Melbourne. Gross tonnage: 2,792, Length: 99.06m (325'). Width: 12.3m (40.3'). Triple expansion steam engines producing 363 nhp. Avge speed 11 knots. Coal consumption 26 ½ tons per 24 hours. Steel hull, one funnel, two masts, barque rig. • 1889: Argus launched. Worked in the Australia to India trade, passengers, goods and horses. • 1891 July: While taking coal from Newcastle to Singapore, ran onto sunken rock in Gaspar Strait (in Indonesia). Watertight bulkheads held, got to Singapore, was repaired for two months, 60,000 Straits dollars (about £12,000). • 1895 July: While taking 400 horses to Colombo, ran onto reef near Somerset, North Queensland. holed, water in two compartments. 400 tons coal jettisoned, finally got off in spring tides. • 1901 Feb: During Boer War took Victorian contingent, 5th Mounted Rifles, fromMelbourne to Durban and Cape Town, with 500 horses. • 1901 Dec: Took horses for Boer War from Brisbane to Durban. • 1903 31 July: Leaving Sydney for Calcutta with 86 horses, 20 passengers including the Sultan of Johore, was rammed by the incoming steamer Mildura (on the wrong side of the channel). Argus's side plating was cut from deck to below waterline, had to be beached on Goat Island to prevent sinking. Refloated 2 August and repaired. • 1905: Argus sold to the Japanese shipping company, Osaka Shosen Kaisha. Renamed Giran Maru. • 1907 11 Sept: Wrecked in Soya Strait, between Hokkaido & Sakhalin Island.Built for Archibald Currie & Partners, Melbourne. Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts was a British Soldier who served in India, Abyssinia and Afghanistan before leading the British Forces to success in the Second Boer War. He became the last Commander-in-Chief of the Forces before the post was abolished in 1904. While in South Africa he was at the Siege of Kimberley, the Battle of Paardeberg, the Battle of Poplar Grove, the Battle of Diamond Hill and the Battle of Bergendal. Roberts received many awards: Victoria Cross (1858-India); Companion of the Order of the Bath (1872-Afghanistan); Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (1878-Afghanistan);Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (1880-Afghanistan) and Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire in the same year. He was Commander-in Chief, India in 1885 was advanced to Knight Commander of the Order of India (1887) and then Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire later that year. He became Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India. The same year he relinquished his Indian command and became Commander-in-Chief of British Forces in 1895 made a Knight of the Order of St Patrick. In 1899 he returned to South Africa to take overall command of British Forces in the Second Boer War. December 1900 Roberts handed over command to Lord Kitchener and returned to England where more honours were awarded. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Garter; created Earl Roberts of Kandahar, Pretoria and Waterford and Viscount St Pierre. He became a Knight of Grace of the Order of St John (1901) and then Knight of Justice of the Order of St John. The Kaiser awarded him the German Order of the Black Eagle and was among the original recipients of the Order of Merit in the 1902 Coronation Honours. Roberts died in 1914. Reproduced on p73 of 'Pioneers & Painters' Two horse drawn carriages outside Thomson's hotel in Kinglake. One is carrying passengers. On the left attached to the hotel is the Post Office. Mrs Thomson was the postmistress who in 1927 had held the position for 43 years (since 1884). The licence for the house was obtained in 1908 by Mr. Harry Thomson who by 1927 was the oldest permanent resident in Kinglake, having been there about 50 years. The hotel was destroyed by bushfire in February 1926 and a new hotel constructed on the site in 1927 by owner and licensee, Mr Frank Thomson, Harry’s son. Another identity at the hotel is Mr W. S. Harris, better known as "Shelley” who was the ranger at Kinglake National Park but also served in the Boer War and World War 1 having got away after being rejected ten times, at the age of 55 years.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.'
