Trophy CWA, Circa 1950
This trophy was presented by the Country Women's Association (C.W.A) Kiewa Valley Branch circa 1950's and 1960s. This was in a period when the C.W.A. was the major women's organisation which had the greatest influence among rural women (especially in isolated areas). This was a period when broad based communications were mainly by radio, women orientated magazines and the telephone. The CWA was an organisation that catered exclusively to women's needs. The C.W.A. motto; "Honour our God, Loyalty to the throne, Service to the country, Through country women, For country women, By country women."The atmosphere was one of "sisterhood" and covered nearly all the needs of rural based women. This one organisation incorporated knowledge and learning targeting women who physically may be isolated but not mentally. This particular trophy was for the "most outstanding Item" in the years: 1956,1958, 1959, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1965.The Kiewa Valley Group of the C.W.A. was a focal point for women in this still relatively isolated rural region a place of refuge from the heavy domestic demands that family and business exerted. It provided for women needs of a time and space to gain all the mental relaxation and group bonding necessary to balance the sometimes harsh environment that rural life presented. It provided companionship and "self worth" avenues through competitions in various activities. Unlike the rural males retreat to the local pub for male bonding women's retreat to the CWA provided a greater facility to interact with other women, of like minds, which for the majority of time benefited their families as well. This item has been manufactured in the form of a "flower" vase. It is made from bronze and is silver plated. It resembles the ancient Olympic torch, with a wide rim at the top and narrowing to the base. The base is circular and has three wave like forms cascading from the base of the "stem" to the bottom of the base."HICKEN TROPHY 1956"mementos, acknowledgement, cwa awards, trophies, rural women's club -

Document - Certificate, College of Arms, City of Brighton Coat of Arms, 1970
The Coat of Arms, represents Brighton City Council's "growing awareness of the importance of formality and correct symbolism in local government". It replaced the council's crest of a pier and yachting scene and was used as council's seal, and emblem on its flag and letterhead. The new Coat of Arms, drawn up by the College of Arms in England, depicts the progression from a seaside gardening community to a modern residential city. The prominent forms are on the shield-like coat of arms include waves and a Lymphad (a ship, symbolic of the sea); a market gardener; an aboriginal man; two horns plenty with abundant fruit and vegetables (the wealth and plenty) and Elster Creek. It is underscored by the motto 'By their fruits, ye shall know them'. Brighton was first incorporated as a borough on 18 January 1859, it became a town on 18 March 1887 and was proclaimed a city on 12 March 1919.Ink and gouache on parchment with wax seals. Souvenir Handkerchief, World War One
This item has been brought back to Australia by a returning soldier from World War One (1914-1918). At a time when France was completely disrupted by the ravages of war many French women, especially those in rural areas, earned a living by making souvenir pieces of embroidery to sell to soldiers in the Allied forces. These embroidered pieces took the form of postcards, doyleys, centerpieces, handkerchiefs etc. The items are noted for the handcraft skills shown by the makers and are prized by collectors today. This item, although fragile, is of considerable interest, firstly as an attractive embroidered piece and secondly, because of its association with World War One as an example of the souvenirs brought back from France to Australia by returning soldiers. This is an oblong-shaped handkerchief or doyley. It has a pink or mauve silk square in the middle with a coloured motif embroidered in one corner. This s a shield with representations of several European flags and embroidered wording underneath. The silk square is edged in a wave pattern in pink. The square has a white lace border. The item is slightly stained and has fold marks.Souvenir de Franceworld war one -
