An item forming part of a collection of costumes, photographs and documents relating to the Weir family who owned and lived in the mansion originally named Illapa, 84 Princess Street, Kew, from 1918 to 1950. [The house is now incorporated by ‘Rylands’.] This historically significant collection includes items relating to both George Weir (1866-1937) and his wife Edith Mary Weir (1867-1948). George Weir, a person of national significance, was general manager of North Broken Hill Mine between 1903 and 1926. The collection includes a number of his patents. He married his wife, Edith Butteridge, in Broken Hill in 1891. The collection includes a number of costumes owned and worn by Edith, including her wedding dress. These costumes date from the 1880s to the 1940s and include items of outstanding aesthetic value. This parasol is significant as it is part of 26-piece collection of women’s clothing owned by Edith Mary Weir (nee Betteridge), who was born in Clare, South Australia in 1867 and who died in Kew at the age of 81 in 1948. The costumes in the donation date from the 1880s to the 1940s and constitute outstanding examples of dressmaker’s skills from each of these decades. The collection includes day dresses, evening dresses, evening coats, capes, a parasol, and undergarments. The costumes in the collection represent the periods when Edith Weir lived in Broken Hill, New South Wales, and in Kew, Melbourne. The garments in the Weir Collection were donated to the Kew Historical Society by the granddaughter of Edith Weir.Parasol - brown silk, pink lined with straight cane handle, owned by Edith Mary Weir (nee Betteridge) of Broken Hill, and later Princess Street, Kew. sovereign case, Early 20th century
Coins are one of the worlds oldest types of currency, though the worlds first coins were very basic . They first began to appear in the ancient world and by the time of the Roman and Greek civilisations, coins were being issued in a range of denominations with quite sophisticated designs. With coins being used instead of older systems such as barter, people needed a way to carry and store their money and the coin holder appeared on the scene. Sovereign cases were small portable boxes usually in cylindrical shape and made from various metals with snap shut covers to contain the coin. This one is kept safe by being attached to a fob chain. The silver sovereign holder was used for carrying either full or half gold sovereigns. It had the shape of a locket or of a watch and was often worn on a chain and kept by gentlemen in a waist coat pocket. This item is an example of a commonly used sovereign case.A small round metal ( nickel plated?) sovereign coin holder. it has a spring opening with a slot for insertion of coin, It has a link attached to top.currency coin sovereign-case personal-effects -

Coat Hanger, Cramond & Dickson Folding
John Glass Cramond 1829 and James Dickson 1831-1910 were founders of a large drapery store. Both were Scots and both came separately to Australia in 1852. Cramond initially came for gold but soon opened a store in St Kilda with a post Office attached and he was the first post master there. Dickson was a farmer’s son but became a draper and while he was unsuccessful on the Bendigo diggings and then returned to Melbourne where he met Cramond and soon after they opened a store on Lonsdale Street. They opened their business in Warrnambool in 1855 as a general store with groceries, drapery and ironmongery. Both partners were involved with the community and James Dickson was an original director of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill 1909 and the Warrnambool Cheese and butter factory. He also served on the committee of management of Warrnambool Base Hospital. This coathanger would have been used in their store. An everyday item linked to one of Warrnambool’s earliest and longest running businesses.Folding coathanger with metal frame covered in brown paper with black cotton tape.
