Book, Ross Publishing, Wiregrass: A Mythical Australian Town, drawings by Percy Leason, text by Garrie Hurchinson, 1986
Back Cover: At a time when black and white art was flourishing in Australia- with artists like Norman Lindsay, Will Dyson and Stan Cross at work - Percy Leason's creation of Wiregrass ranked him as an illustrator of surpassing genius. His early successes as a book illustrator and as a cartoonist for the Bulletin and Melbourne Punch, presaged a full flowering of his work with his creation of the mythical town and his endowment of it with a host of characters and comic situations. His inspiration came from his childhood town in Kaniva, Western Victoria but Wiregrass was every country town, with its general store, pub and church hall, its swimming hole, football ground and racecourse, its leading citizens, its battlers and mischievous children. Wiregrass flourished in Table Talk Magazine from 1926 to 1937 when Leason, seeking to escape his comic reputation and pursue "serious" art, went to live in America." Percy Leason lived in Eltham Softcover, 80 p. : ill., 1 port. ; 30 cm.ISBN 0850912490australian wit and humour, drawing, caricatures and cartoons, country life -

Record of Conduct and Service (Charles Belcher)
When the First World War broke out, Australian men from all backgrounds and professions were called to serve their country. Members of the Victorian Police force were some of the first to answer the call with twenty men joining the first convoy of soldiers who left Australian shores in October 1914. Over the course of four long years, one hundred and thirty-eight Victorian Police enlisted from stations across the state. Of these, twenty-seven lost their lives. Whilst the fate of each man was different, a deep commitment to protecting and serving the public was common to all. Book, Longfellow, Late 19th century
Henry Longfellow (1807-1882) was an American poet, the most popular one of his day. With poems such as ‘Paul Revere’s Ride’ he helped shape the American character. He was also popular in the British Empire countries and many people in places such as Warrnambool would have had a copy of his published works. The recipient of this volume, Albert Henry Lawson, was the son of Thomas and Susan Lawson, shopkeepers in Warrnambool in the 1870s and 80s. Albert Lawson became a pupil teacher in Cobden in 1903 and from 1904 to 1907 it appears that he was an assistant teacher at his brother’s school, Warrnambool College. This was a private school established by Richard Lawson and William Oakley in 1900. Albert Lawson was given the copy of Longfellow’s poems when he left Warrnambool College in 1907. He then embarked on a teaching career with the Victorian Education Department, married Susan Oakley, the daughter of William Oakley, and died in Melbourne in 1972.This beautiful book of Longfellow poems is worth keeping as an example of an antiquarian book. But it is most significant because of its inscription, telling us of its association with both the Lawson and Oakley Warrnambool College and Albert Lawson, a member of the Lawson family which had many members important in Warrnambool’s history. The inscription tells us that Albert Lawson worked as a teacher for some years at his brother’s school, a fact that was not fully documented until the acquisition of this book. This is a leather bound book of 698 pages. The cover is mottled brown in a raised pattern and the pages are edged with a red-gold tinge. The insides of the cover are edged with a red and gold border and have a blue, brown and cream mottled pattern. There is a sketch of Longfellow in the front with a tissue page covering the sketch. The pages of the book are of fine paper typical of a late Victorian publication. The book has a thin blue ribbon page marker which has become detached from the book. The book is edited by William Michael Rossetti.Front Cover: ‘Longfellow’ Spine: ‘Longfellow’ Inside on a blank page: ‘To Mr A.H. Furniture - Chair, Late 19th to early 20th century
Originally the Bow Chair started off life with the name of the ‘Smoker’s Bow Chair’ where originally, it wasn’t designed for grandeur like many chairs of the time, but instead was designed for practicality and comfort. The original Smoker’s Bow Chair was a simple chunkier version of the Windsor Chair design which first appeared in the 1820’s. Although it lacked the high back found on any Windsor Chair of the time, it maintained a heavier, sturdier appearance. The main feature was a hoop or bow which was fashioned from steamed wood. This was then curved to make both the back support and arms. The chair also consisted of a wide seat, supported by 4 splayed, spindle legs. In its original form it was found in many country kitchens of the day as well as in many inns and public houses throughout the United Kingdom. Family photograph, Vincent Gercovich family, c. 1889
Vincent Gercovich married Winifred Rebecca Bennett (English emigrant) on 13 February 1867 in St. Alipius church in Ballarat. They had a total of 12 children. Little is known about his life, but what is known that he was well disposed to several languages and due to his ability to communicate with immigrants worked at the entry gate to the city of Ballarat. He died at the age of 61. Vincent was one of these early Croatian immigrants who came to Victoria around 1850s. His surname Gercovich (probably Gerković or Jerković) came from the island of Hvar on Dalmatian coast. On his Australian citizenship documents, the place of birth was stated as Dalmatia, Austria. From research of collected documents it can be concluded that the first Croats arrived to this country some 150 years ago mainly because of gold discovery. Victoria had a few rich deposits of gold and for obvious reasons many came to join the great ‘Gold Rush’.A black and white family photograph features Gercovich family with 12 children photographed in a studio around 1889. Children ages on the photograph range from unborn to young adults.vincent and winifred gercovich, gercovich, early croatian immigrants, immigration, croatia, dalmatia, ballarat, gold rush -

Quilt, Dressage Quilt, 1985
‘Dressage Quilt’ was made by Jan Ross-Manley for the Running Stitch exhibition Wool Quilts Old and New in 1985. The quilt is made from the sashes of winning female participates of Equestrian Sports in Victoria. The central diamond is divided into quarters, one for each woman who won the ribbons. The piece is about dedication, strength, exertion and achievement. The artist's statement reads: "I have been collecting pennants and sashes for some time now, intending to collate a series of pieces on Australian country life and people. This is a woman's quilt, made entirely from 'horse' sashes won at competition. The central diamond is divided into quarters, one for each lady who won the ribbons. 'Hurdles' are set into the inner borders. The piece is about dedication, strength, exertion and achievement. The all pervading yellow letters cast a tawdriness over the otherwise clean colour scheme." This quilt was later part of an identically titled exhibition held at the National Wool Museum in 1989.Large quilt consisting of numerous winning horse sashes sewn together to create a patchwork quilt separated into quarters, bordered by a royal blue trim. The centre of the quilt is a diamond shape made from various pink cotton strips and bordered by multi coloured horses heads. The quilt is backed with blue cotton and has a polyester fill.quilting history, patchwork history, running stitch group, running stitch collection, highlights of the national wool museum: from waggas to the wool quilt prize - exhibition (22/09/2001 - 02/12/2001), ross-manley, ms jan, quilting - history, patchwork - history -

Sample Book, "Selected Suitings of Crusader Cloth" sample book
This book dates from the 1940s and was part of the Running Stitch collection of quilts, probably because it was common for women to acquire these books from travelling salesmen. This sample book is an example of the type made by textile mills and given to tailors to sell fabric for made to measure suits. With little money to spare during the austere years of the war, women often acquired these books from tailors when the fabrics were no longer available. They made use of the fabric sample pieces to make quilts. The Australian Woollen Mills was an example of a woollen mill which went into worsted production making good quality English-type suiting. They were very successful until the 1960's when the oversupply of worsted fabrics from Europe and Asia led to the decline of the industry in this country. This book was displayed in the Running Stitch exhibition "Wool Quilts Old and New" of 1985 where it was catalogue entry number 40.Australian Woollen Mills Crusader fabric sample book, c.1940sKnight / QUALITY SELECTED / SUITINGS / of / Crusader / CLOTH / NEVER SOLD OUT Crusader / CLOTH / Makes the best suits "Crusader" / WORSTEDaustralian woollen mills pty ltd running stitch group, cloth - worsted, running stitch collection -

Taxidermy Sheep, Booka, c1980
The ‘Wanganella’ merino sheep stud was established by the Peppin brothers in the Riverina in 1861. The introduction of a single French ‘Rambouillet’ Merino ram, called Emperor, is now widely acknowledged as one of the most important events in the development of the Peppin stud. As many as 70% of today’s Australian Merinos are said to be directly descended from the Peppin-developed sheep. Its heavy fleece falls in the mid-range of Merino wool qualities (20 to 23 microns) and is protected from the excesses of the environment by a comparatively high content of natural wool grease, which can be seen in the creamy colour of Booka’s wool. Fred Peppin said [of the sheep breed] "We were satisfied with the type of wool that the country would grow, instead of endeavouring to produce what the climate and soil continually fight against. Thus we developed all its good natural tendencies and after that the flock had a character of its own.”Peppin merino stud. Has a large body and long legs. Bullock teams could comprise more than twenty bullocks to haul very large and heavy loads. They were the equivalent of large trucks on the roads of today. Many Australian country towns have very wide main streets to allow for large bullock teams to turn without having to unharness and reharness the animals. The bullock driver in this photo is thought to be of James Densley, aka Charlie (the ) Carter, who lived at Hopetoun, east of the township of Bacchus Marsh. He worked as a carrier with a bullock team in the later years of the nineteenth century. He had a reputation as a sober man who never used bad language. (Williams, W. A History of Bacchus Marsh and its Pioneers. 1836-1936. Reproduced 2015 BMDHS.p. 78.) James Densley died in 1905, supposed to be over the age of ninety.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. The image shows a group of seven shorthorn bullocks in a paddock. Their yokes and a chain can be seen. Standing near them is a bearded man holding a bullock team leader's whip. He is dressed neatly and is wearing a very smart hat. On the hilltop stands a large hut, possibly with a bark shingle roof. A chimney is at the end of the dwelling. On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll. Photo. 108 Elizabeth St. Melbourne.
