According to the paper label "Expatriate Clive James was named the 1993 Legacy Personality of the Year at a special function conducted by Melbourne Legacy. Clive entertained over 500 guests with a personal address of his time as a young Legacy boy. Clive will be seen later in the year as part of Legacy's Annual Badge Appeal." It was a "Breakfast with Clive James" at the Regent Hotel in February 1993, and Australian author Patsy Adam-Smith and Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop were also guests. A photo of a former junior legatee participating in a boys basketball class. Ron Barassi was a successful AFL footballer at the time. Ron was a a junior legatee after his father Ron Barassi Snr was killed at Tobruk in World War II. He has participated in many Legacy events over many years. This was an early record of his involvement at a young age. One of the boys was Ian Paltridge on the far left (1955/56?) - from a note added to the photo at some stage. In 1999 Legacy featured photos of events through the year in the Presidents report. Graham Riches was President. Up to the 1980s the annual report would usually contain pages containing the Presidents report and photos of significant events of the year. Between 1987 and 1990 these were published in a separate document called 'Highlights from the Annual Report'. This could be used in promoting Legacy in different ways, without all the financial information normally held in an annual report. In following years it became called 'Report from the President' then 'Highlights from the President', before becoming 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights' which was published twice a year from 2007. It was eventually renamed, 'The Torch, Melbourne Legacy Highlights' in 2012. A photo from a newsletter from September 1953. The photo shows the East St Kilda boys class enjoying their class work and games, which included wrestling, tumbling and having a romp. The boys met at the Drill Hall Argyle St, St Kilda on Friday nights at 7.30. The newsletter mentions that the photos of the boys classes were donated to Legacy by Mr John Beckett of Sandringham. A photo of Badge Day in the 1960s, with Ivan Layton, Mrs Mack and Legatee Bert Davis counting the donations near a Legacy Appeal tin. Ivan Layton was the Chief Executive Officer for many years. Legatee Bert Davis was the Chief Financial Officer in the early sixties. Mrs Mack was a generous fundraiser. She lived at Mount Macedon and opened her beautiful garden to the public on a regular basis to assist Legacy with fundraising. She was given a Legacy lone pine tree by a grateful Legacy to add to her garden. The letter accompanying the photo said the garden and tree was lost in the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983. Further research shows that Mrs Margaret Mack and her husband Mr John D. (Jack) Mack first opened their garden at Dreamthorpe, Mt Macedon, in April 1950 for a garden fete. It raised £140 for Legacy (source: Trove). The exact date of the photo is unknown but would be early 1960s. Eliza McGlone was the wife of John McGlone and they were early settlers in Mitcham. They ran one of the earliest hotels in Mitcham: 'The Harvest Home' from 1873. The hotel was conducted in the front room of their house in Whitehorse Road, Mitcham, on the corner of what is now McGlone Street. The hotel closed in 1889. John McGlone died on 3 September 1892 aged 65. Eliza McGlone continued to live in Mitcham until her death on 2 January 1921, aged 85. She had been Mitcham's first official Postmistress and, following several others who had held that position, she returned to that role for a period up to 1914 when Bertha Markham was appointed. The McGlones owned substantial rental properties and had donated one acre in central Mitcham for the Catholic Church. O'Callaghan's hotel was one of three 'hotels' which operated in Mitcham in the late 19th century. Suited on the corner of Station St and Whitehorse Road it was run by Irish widow, Mary Jane O'Callaghan. The S McIntosh's Bridge Hotel is in the background, along with four shops including the Oriental Cafe for Tea and Grills. It would appear that the gripman is ready to leave though a male passenger seems to be hurrying forward to catch the tram. The typed caption records that the dummy is No. 12, the photograph is dated Jan. 1924 and notes the slotted depot lead out track in the foreground.
