A portrait of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh that has been owned by Legacy for many years. It was previously hung alongside a painting of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, but has been moved to storage in the archive. Extremely similar to a portrait of Price Philip that is owned by the City of Melbourne. It had been painted in 1956 just before Price Philip opened the Olympic games in Melbourne. Perhaps this was a draft or copy of the City of Melbourne portrait. The photo appeared on the front page of the Herald Sun on 6 September 1991 to publicise Legacy Week. The accompanying article says that police piper Constable Ross Bates played outside Legacy House to pipe in Legacy Day, which saw hundreds of collectors spread across Melbourne for the badge appeal. The article in The Answer in May 1993 says: The ever-smiling L/ Ron Austin is an inspiration for all. Ron has the distinction of being the youngest surviving Melbourne Legatee to have served in WW1. He joined over 300 Legatees to march as part of the Legacy contingent to mark Legacy's 70th anniversary, and he marched again for a a few blocks as he joined members of his wireless unit to catch up with old friends. Ron was just 14 and a half when he joined the R.A.N. in 1917 as a Boy Seaman. He served for 10 years, resumed civilian life, then in 1931 joined the RAAF Telecommunications. WWII kept him busy! In 1949 he became Assistant Air Attache in Washington, D.C. Ron retired from the Service in 1955 as Wing Commander. It comes as no surprise that Ron was awarded an O.B.E. for his tireless devotion to duty and you might sense Ron has been a tireless member of Legacy too." Instructor Jim Tierney and a group of boys in a boxing class in the 1940s. The boys are wearing singlets with a DS logo, showing that they were in the Don Esses club. Young men that had outgrown the activities that Legacy provided for junior boys formed the Intermediate Legacy Club (ILC) and they were active from 1929 to the 1970s. One of the activities the ILC undertook was to provide classes for children of incapacitated ex-servicemen. A photo of boys being instructed by Jim Tierney. The embroidered symbol on their shirts are 'DS' which stands for Don Esses. This was another group of boys that Legacy helped. From notes on the ILC (Intermediate Legacy Club): The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. A Legacy widow, Beryl Billing, with two school girls from Siena College and a lot of loose letters. Six school girls came to Legacy house to meet the weekly gathering of the stamp ladies. They had chosen Legacy as a cause they wanted to help and decided to collect stamps, they donated over 5,000 stamps. The widows clubs have sorted used stamps and sold to a stamp dealer for many years to the present day. It raises funds and provides a purpose for gathering together. Beryl Billings was the co-ordinator of the stamp sorting for many years.
