Slide - Photograph, Monument with time capsule, Eltham Community Centre, Main Road, Eltham, c.1997
The monument with time capsule was established by the Shire of Eltham Historical Society to commemorate Victoria’s 150th anniversary and mark the former location of the Eltham Town Centre, which existed along this section of Main Road, then known as Maria Street. The unveiling was conducted 10 November 1985 by Cr. Mary Grant (Shire President). The monument was constructed with a concrete base and the main feature is an old tyring plate or disc. The Time Capsule Ceremony involved lowering the sealed time capsule into place, bolting down its container lid and then concreting over the lid. The capsule contains items relating to present day (1985) Eltham and its people including a video film made by Joh Ebeli and also details of families and organizations who have contributed to construction of the monument. It is to be opened in the year 2035. The Society received an excellent response from local people, firms and organizations by way of assistance with this project. Graham Beyer, who originated the project, arranged many of the donations. He and his firm, Package Handling Equipment, donated the time capsule itself and carried out fabrication of sections of the monument. The design of the monument was adapted by Graham Beyer from drawings by Joh Ebeli. Charmac Industries donated the container for the time capsule and a cast gun metal name plate for the monument. BMG Concrete donated concrete for the base which was constructed by Caridi Construction Company. Northbourne Garden Supplies donated materials for the paving around the monument. Robert Becker from Eltham Apex directed construction of the paving by Society members. Terry Hutchinson donated the use of his crane to lift the tyring disc into place. Financial contributions were also made by the Eltham Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Eltham. In 1987 in commemoration of the Society’s 20th Anniversary, Joh Ebeli suggested the commissioning of a plaque to be added which explains the functions of the various items used in the Society’s Victorian 150th Anniversary Monument and this was unveiled by its designer, Joh Ebeli, on October 10, 1987.35mm colour positive transparency Mount - Black and Whiteeltham, eltham community centre, monument, public art, time capsule -

Photograph - Turning Of The First Sod, 1908
The 19th of May marks the anniversary of the turning of the first sod of the outfall sewer. In 1888, a Royal Commission into Melbourne’s public health led to an ambitious plan to construct a sewerage system of underground pipes, sewers and drains to carry sewage from homes and factories to a sewage treatment farm. The commission also supported the establishment of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW), the authority that would build the sewerage system and manage Melbourne’s water supply. This photograph is from The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works Water Supply, Sewerage, and etc Photographic Views, 1908This photograph is in excellent condition and provides a detailed insight into Board personnel of the MMBW. As the 100th anniversary approaches of the opening of the Mitcham Post Office at the corner of Station Street and Whitehorse Road, the recording of the history of the building is appropriate. Brian Millane's grandfather, Patrick Joseph Markham commissioned the building; his wife, Bertha Jane (nee Cruse) was the Mitcham postmistress from 1913 to 1943; and their daughter, Mary Millane, (nee Markham) was acting postmistress on several occasions and operated a shop in the building from 1944 to 1957. This talk records elements of the postal service in Mitcham, the locations of post offices and people involved in mail services from about 1900 to 1944.The speaker not only lived in the post office building from 1944 to 1957 but also had access to historically relevant documents and oral accounts of events and facts related to the building and postal services. The transcript incorporates many images and discussion of their importance in understanding the operations and way of life within the building.patrick joseph markham, bertha jane markham, mary elizabeth millane (nee markham), harold ernest millane, eliza mcglone nee o'mara, john mcglone -

Melbourne Legacy
Audio - Recording, tape, Legacy Week 1973. Message given by H.R.H Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh, 1973
A recording made by H.R.H. Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh for Legacy Week in 1973 so that could be broadcast on TV. 1973 was the 50th Anniversary of Legacy. The text of the Prince's television message is: 'This is the 50th Anniversary of the foundation of Legacy which grew from some 14 members in Melbourne to more than 6,000 throughout Australia and now looks after 85,000 widows and 34,000 children of deceased ex-servicemen. This is a remarkable achievement and I think that Legacy is well known all over Australia for the very valuable work which it does for the widows of ex-servicemen and their children. I think that people have gone off to war and they have sacrificed themselves for things they believe in but they are always anxious, most anxious, about the people that they leave behind - their wives and their children. It's possible, of course, to set cup Government organisation to look after them, and to provide for them, but it needs something more than that. It needs the relationship which has gone because the father is no longer there and this is really the purpose of Legacy - to provide that essential personal element in looking after the widows of the men who went off to war and their children. I would like to congratulate Legacy on continuing this very fine work for 50 years and I hope that it will go on to do as well in the next 50 years.'A record that the 50th Anniversary was a significant milestone and the occasion was marked by a broadcast by Prince Philip.White cardboard box with the Klarion Enterprises logo containing a spool of video tape and a sheet of yellow foolscap paper as a media release with the transcript of the recording of Prince Philip for Legacy Week.Label,"Legacy Week" 1973.
