Original jewellery design for 'Britannia' pendant by Ernest Leviny, designed when he was living in London c1851, before travelling to the Australian goldfields of Castlemaine in late 1852. Leviny and his partner, Frederick Boocke, supplied jewellery designs to Watherston and Brogden in London. This design was made into a pendant by another London company, S.H. & D. Gass and was awarded a prize medal at the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace in London. Leviny brought many of his original jewellery designs with him when he came out to Australia from Britain. The Victoria Hotel was on the corner of Skipton and Geelong Roads in Linton and is believed to have been built around 1860. H. Blunt and afterwards Ellen Blunt were licensees between 1864 and 1881. Ambrose and Mary Murrell were licensees from December 1882 and ran the hotel for many years. Mary Murrell continued to run it with her daughter Caroline after Ambrose Murrell died. The building was demolished in 1938. The local photograph shows the original footbridge across the Merri River near its mouth, the Viaduct road and the Warrnambool Breakwater with the Titan crane on it. The breakwater's construction was completed in 1890, the year this photograph was taken. The Viaduct has since been filled in to prevent water from passing through the pylons, and the footbridge has been replaced. The postcard has a personal message written on the back to a Dr Scott from May. The photograph is locally significant for recording the completion of the Warrnambool Breakwater, for showing the original design of the Viaduct and for a clear view of the original footbridge across the Merri River. It is also of significance for being used by a female to send a greeting from Warrnambool to a doctor.
