Photograph, Clive Hutchison, 'Our Hopes and Future of Morwell' Photographic Collection, 2017
This photographic exhibition was developed by the Federation University-led Community Wellbeing research stream of the Hazelwood Health Study in collaboration with Morwell Neighbourhood House and Gippsland Centre for Art and Design at Federation University Australia. It highlights people's hopes for the future of Morwell has its roots in two unexpected places: the Hazelwood mine fire in 2014 and an academic study into community recovery from that fire. In late summer of 2014 a bushfire spread to the coal mine near the town of Morwell in the LaTrobe Valley, in south-eastern Victoria. The Hazelwood mine fire burned for 45 days, shrouding communities - especially Morwell - in smoke and ash. Strong calls by the community for an investigation into the health impacts of the Hazelwood Mine Fire led to the Department of Health's (Know the Department of Health and Human Services) decision to fund a ten year study of the potential health effects of this smoke event (Known as the Hazelwood Health Study). This exhibition came out of work undertaken by the Community Wellbeing Stream of the Hazelwood Health Study during 2016 and 2017. Based at Federation University Australia's Gippsland Campus, just a few kilometres from where the fire took place, one of our Study's main aims has been to find out from the community how the smoke event impacted on community wellbeing. We also planned to talk to community members about the effectiveness of community rebuilding activities, and find our how these have aided recovery following the smoke event. In 2017 we began working with community organisations on a project to foster community recovery and wellbeing. What emerged from these discussions was the idea for a photographic exhibition, on the theme of 'Our hopes for the future of Morwell'. Invitations to participate were extended to up to 50 members of various community groups. The groups were asked to think of some object that symbolizes their hopes for the future of Morwell. Individuals were then invited to attend a photographic session kindly hosted by the Morwell Neighbourhood House. Each individual was to hold this object while it was photographed, as well as explain what the object represented in terms of Morwell's future. Out of this process twenty nine photographs with their captions were produced, enlarged and framed for exhibiting. The photographs were taken by Clive Hutchison of the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design at Federation University Australia.Twenty nine framed original photographs.morwell, our hopes for the future of morwell, clive hutchison, photography, morwell neighbourhood house, hazelwood health service, gippsland centre for art and design, hazelwood mine fire, haxelwood health study, morwell neighbourhood mine fire, neale stratford, tracie lund, ian brown, susan yell, sue whyte, ainsley ja, ainsley james, michelle duffy, shaun mallia, valerie prokopiv, morwell art and framing -

The sport had its origins during the Depression of the 1930s when teams were formed to keep young women fit and healthy. The sport became more organised during the 1940s with a system of scoring developed to ensure teams could compete against one another. Points were deducted for lack of precisions, dressing, movement and length of pace. At its peak marching competitions drew large crowds of spectators. Teams marched not only in competitions but also frequently appeared in parades and social occasions. Jim Trewin trained Orbost's Marching Girls' team, the Waratahs, and served as vice president of the East Gippsland Marching Girls' zone. Bemm River is a small township in East Gippsland. There have been several Bemm River hotels since 1891 when the first Hotel was built by Henry Summer. This Hotel was located near a ford where traffic crossed the river. Annie Morgan was the next person to have a roadside licence to sell liquor at Bemm River, also known as Sydenham Inlet Hotel. In 1927, a hotel was built on the present site at Bemm River, again with the Morgan family. Like many hotels, the Bemm River hotel has burned down or suffered damage through fires and was rebuilt. These photos are likely of a fire at the Hotel in 1994 which resulted in the hotel burning down. Map, Survey of Dividing Range between Yarra Yarra and Western Port - William Wedge Darke, 1843
Extract - Ringwood, Place of Many Eagles - Hugh Anderson (1974): William Wedge Darke, from Hereford, England, was a nephew of John Helder Wedge of the Port Phillip Association, who was also a surveyor. William's most important work was probably his survey of the Dividing Range and the country between the Yarra River and Western Port, completed in May 1843, and during which he made a traverse between the Mullum and Dandenong creeks along the higher ground that he labelled the "best line of road from Melbourne". This road was for many years the major route to Gippsland and to the higher country about Alexandra and Mansfield, sometimes known as White Horse Road, and now Maroondah Highway.Surveyor's relief map of features to the east of Melbourne including Yarra Yarra River, Mullum Mullum Creek, Anderson's Creek, Dandenong Creek.Transmitted to the Surveyor General with my letter of 10th May 1843 (signed) Wm Wedge Drake, Assistant Surveyor. Scale: two inches to a mile. Descriptive remarks include upstream area of Yarra River - "impassable, appears to have been formerly a lake", and to the south - "barren and scrubby swamps of the Western Port Country". Marked tracks include "best line of road from Melbourne", "track to Dandenong", "Road to Port Albert may probably be found on this range", "Best line to Upper Yarra". Several huts also marked. -

Document (item) - Allansford land purchase document, Land purchase document, 1864
This paper contains details of the purchase of Lot 11 in the Township of Allansford in 1864. The purchaser, Isabella McQueen, was born in Scotland in 1814, married Alexander McQueen in 1850 and with her family migrated to Australia in 1854. After her husband's death in 1860 Isabella purchased the land in Frank Street, Allansford in 1864 and lived in a house there with family members until her death in 1895. She had purchased the land, via an agent, from John Allan who with his brothers were the pioneer European settlers in the Allansford area. John Allan had created the township of Allansford in the mid 1850s by sub-dividing the land he owned there. John Allan moved to the Gippsland area late in 1864. This piece of paper is most significant as it is an original record of an early transaction in the history of Allansford, a town now part of Warrnambool City.Mrs isabella McQueen Bot. of Robert Gregory As agent for J M Allan Esq. Financial record - Receipt: Grassmere Gold Mining Company, 1898
Grassmere is a small hamlet about 12 kilometres from Warrnambool. It is a farming area. The Grassmere Gold Mining Company, presumably established by local people in Grassmere, was created in 1898 for the purpose of acquiring from Messrs James and Mewha a lease of a Cassilis gold mine (23 acres). The Manager of the Company was Horatio Dickson of Melbourne and the brokers were McMeekin and Co. of Melbourne and Warrnambool and Dickson and Osborne of Melbourne. This reef mine was one of several in Cassilis, Gippsland, 12 kilometres north west of Swifts Creek. The gold-bearing quartz reefs were discovered in 1885 and worked to 1914. It is not known whether the Grassmere Cassilis mine was a financial success but the mining operations were impeded by the hardness of the stone in the area. William Robinson was a farmer in the Grasmere area. This receipt is of considerable interest as one of only three items the Warrnambool and District Historical Society that is connected to the establishment of the Grassmere Gold Mining Company. The gold mine establishment was one of the many minor events in the district in the 1890s. This is an 1899 receipt for William Robinson upon payment of six shillings and three pence, being part payment for shares in the Grassmere Gold Mining Company. The buff-coloured paper has black printing and black-ink handwriting. There are two stamps – one is the stamp of ‘H.S.Dickson’ and the other is the stamp of the ‘Grassmere Gold Mining Company, No Liability’.
