Photograph, Fay Bridge, Eastern boundary of former Warrandyte Aboriginal Reserve, North Warrandyte, 7 November 2016
Two bronze commemorative plaques on rocks, unveiled by Wurundjeri Tribe Council Elders, mark two eastern boundaries of the former Warrandyte Aboriginal Reserve on the north and south sides of the Yarra. This project was initiated by Nillumbik Reconciliation Group in close association with Reconciliation Manningham and the Wurundjeri Tribe Council, as a means of commemorating the last great corroboree of the Kulin Nation which was held at Pound Bend in March 1852. This plaque is on the Nillumbuk side of the Yarra, accessed via The Boulevard, North Warrandyte. The plaque is set on a rock approximately 50 metres before the turning circle at the end of The Boulevard. Plaque : Warrandyte Aboriginal Reserve This commemorative rock marks an eastern boundary of the former Warrandyte Aboriginal Reserve established in 1852. Centred on Pound Bend, it covered 1,908 acres on both sides of the Yarra River (Birrarung). That same year saw the last great gathering of the Kulin nation here in Wurundjeri country which was celebrated over two weeks with traditional performance and games. For a few years longer the reserve intermittently served as a ration station. With gold having been discovered at Warrandyte, the Wurundjeri were moved on again but ultimately secured a permanent home at Coranderrk, Healesville. A second commemorative plaque and rock is located on the opposite bank of the Yarra and its confluence with Stony Creek. Instrument - Bass Drum, Ludwig & Ludwig, Early 1920's
This Marching Bass Drum is mid-size at 68 cm; these drums can range from 35 to 81 cm (14 to 32 inches). A Marching Bass Drum is slightly smaller than a Concert Base Drum and larger than a Kit or Drum Set Bass Drum. The drum is supported by a shoulder harness with a pin that connects to the eyelet incorporated on the shell of the drum, which keeps the drumheads vertical. The drum is played with one or two felt-covered drum mallets. The six tension rods connected between the drumheads can be screwed tighter or looser to change the tension of the calfskins on the drumheads, which changes their tune. This Marching base drum was made in the early 1920s by the firm Ludwig & Ludwig of Chicago, Illinois, USA. LUDWIG & LUDWIG: - William F. Ludwig was a professional drummer. He and his brother Theobold established the Ludwig & Ludwig drum factory in Chicago in 1909. They became famous for their invention of a bass drum pedal that could play faster beats on the bass drum. Theobald passed away in 1918. By 1923 Ludwig was the biggest drum manufacturer in the world. William continued on when his business was bought by C.O. Conn, but in 1937 he left to begin his own company; the WFL Drum Company. William and his son Bill purchased the Ludwig & Ludwig name back from Conn, and the name William F. Ludwig II continued on. The brand was sold to the Selmer Company and moved to Monroe, North Carolina in 1998, at the time of the 75th anniversary of the Ludwig name. Ludwig drums are still being manufactured over 100 years later. Many famous musicians and bands played the Ludwig bass drum, including Ringo Star who was the drummer in the 1960’s group The Beatles. This marching bass drum is significant for its connection to Ludwig & Ludwig, a famous and popular drum manufacturer established in 1909. The firm was once the largest drum manufacturer in the world. It is known for supplying drummers of fame, such as Ringo Star of The Beatles. This is the only drum in our collection. It is also rare, having only six tension rods, where most have from eight to twelve.Marching Bass Drum; the polished shell around the body is one continuous sheet of timber that has been steamed, shaped into a cylinder and joined together. The drumheads on the sides of the shell are strong timber strips joined into hoops that hold stretched, hand-painted white calfskin. Six Long Tube threaded nickel-plated brass tension rods are evenly spaced around the drumheads between the drumheads. A brass eyelet is fitted into the shell halfway between each drumhead, providing a connection point for the drummer’s shoulder harness. The eyelet has an indecipherable inscription. An oval brass plaque with a central formed hole has a stamped inscription. The imperial size is 27 x 13 inches. The drum was made by Ludwig and Ludwig, Chicago, Illinois, in early 1920's. On brass plaque; “LUDWIG / TRADE MARK / LUDWIG & LUDWIG / CHICAGO”flagstaff hill, warrnambool, maritime village, maritime museum, flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, shipwreck coast, great ocean road, shipwreck artefact, marching drum, bass drum, marching bass drum, pitched drum, band drum, drum mallet, marching band, military band, percussion instrument, calfskin, shoulder harness, ludwig & ludwig, wfl drum company, william f. ludwig, chicago, north carolina, the beatles, tension taps, tension rods, drum pedal, long tube tension rods -

Digitised Oral History – Truganina Explosives Reserve - Tape 1 Doug and Noel Grant, 2018
The interviews were recorded in 2000 by Bronwen Gray and Alan Young for the production of Unreserved, Stories from Truganina Explosives Reserve, animated stories from past residents, workers and interested people of the Reserve (subject to copyright 2004). Doug and Noel Grant’s Grandfather, Don Grant, was officer in charge of Truganina Explosives Reserve from 1910-1930. On his retirement, his son, William (known as Bill) took over the position until 1956. Along with their two older brothers and younger sister, Doug and Noel Grant grew up, first in the assistant manager’s weatherboard cottage and then in the brick house which was set aside for the officer in charge, until they married and moved into their own homes in their early 1920s. On returning from the second world war, Noel Grant worked as a magazine assistant of explosives on the site from 1946, When the site had closed down in 1962 he worked as an inspector of explosives at the Explosives Branch in Melbourne until he retired in 1985. During that time Noel was asked to move back on site, meaning that three generations of Grants have lived on the site during the twentieth century. Doug Grant worked for ICI/Nobel in head office in 1940 and their older brother Alan worked at the Nobel Explosive Company in Deer Park from 1937. After returning from the Second World War, Alan bought a transport business that had once had the licence to cart explosives in and around the state. They discuss their memories of the living at Truganina Explosives Reserve and the workings of the Reserve, including the names of men who worked there, ships which carried the explosives and life in and around Altona. We contacted UNSW Press, the book's publisher, which provided the following explanation. Apparently, the team there could not find the scan of the slide submitted for the book. However, a member of the team was able to capture a jpg of page 76 of the book. From my recollection of the original photo, the attached image is very close in terms of its reproduction quality. We trust this is of use to you and BTM. Regards Randall and Dalemelbourne, mt pleasant, barkly st -

Elaine Mann was married to David Mann, a successful Wodonga businessman and community leader who passed away in Wodonga in June 2012. David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. Elaine was a teacher in Wodonga for many years and an active member of the community. This photo collection is of significance as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the late 20th century. This building was erected in the 1890's. It was originally the premises of the Federal Coach Factory, then Buntz's Garage, and became Mylon's Garage. July 1960 saw it open as Wodonga Market. An article in Wodonga and District Express dated 1 July 1960 announced: “Wodonga’s New Market Open Today” Arcade Style Shopping "Wodonga’s new market will be open as from morning trade today. Modelled on current overseas open marketing ideas, the new business is similar to the Albury Market in David Street. The Manager (Mr. Ned Day) said yesterday that shops and stalls were sub-let to tenants for a “co-operative rent” which enabled the market to pass these advantages on to the people in lower prices. The building would lend itself to the arcade style which made attractive presentation and would also assist the customer to make quick purchases. There was over 5000 square feet of shopping space.” Businesses open that day were Gerecke’s with a display of secondhand furniture and fittings, and a poultry mart to open the following Friday. Also Webster’s Fruit and Vegetables. Mr. Ned Day advertised space for a variety of listed business types. Businesses recognised in the photo include a Butcher, Webster's Fruit & Vegies, Bill Dunstan's Boat Centre. Snack Bar/Fish & Chips/Milk Bar Auction Mart, New & Used Furniture. Poultry was also available every Friday. The building was demolished in 1963.wodonga businesses, high st wodonga, wodonga market, auction mart
