Two handwritten extracts from the Bendigo Advertiser 17/6/1910 regarding the inrush of water at the Victoria Quartz Mine. 'When the inrush of water came on Tuesday night, the men had to make a hurried exit from the bottom of the shaft and 4254 ft. plat. The working equipment left below consists of three rock-drilling machines, air-winch, two trucks, about one ton of drills, while rails, air-pipes, etc, below the 3224 ft. plat are not likely to be recovered'. Listed is the Year, Water Raised (Gallons), Total Amount Re?ed and Amount Re? Coys. The New Chum Drainage Ass'n was formed in 1901 and practically ceased to exist in 1908. Victoria Quartz at time of inrush of water on Tuesday night, the shaft had reached a depth of 4,614 feet. Water has since risen in the shaft to above 4,154 ft plat & the large workings at 4,254 feet, and 4,154 feet have also been t filled. As there are no reef workings from 4,154 to 3,424 feet the water will no doubt rise rapidly until that level is reached. A poppet head is the framework above a mine shaft which supports the wheels for the winding cables. there where hundreds of poppet heads in Bendigo.Wooden model of a Poppet Head. A pyramid shape with a 32 centimetre square shaped base rising 45 centimetres to a 13 centimetre square top with two nine centimetre pully wheels mounted on it. Halfway from the base is a 22 centimetre square platform. It has a nine centimetre square opening with a cage in it that is attached to a pully above. There is a twenty centimetre by ten centimetre platform extending from one side, the opposite side has a six centimetre wide staircase leading to the ground. there is cage in the bottom platform that is attached to a pully on the top platform. Off white Christmas card with 'All Good wishes for Xmas and the New Year' printed at the top. In the centre is a circular picture of a mine with its buildings and two chimneys. The chimneys extend past the outer edge of the circle. To the bottom left is a bunch of wattle. A smaller piece of wattle is on the bottom right. Bendigo Amalgamated Goldfields No Liability and December 19th, 1917 is printed under the picture. All the printing and picture is printed in sepia and darker brown. On the back of the card, from the top centre to the centre left is a printed lace pattern in light red. On the inside left is a refreshment menu. It is a mixture of mining terms and food items.
