Photograph - Army Survey Regiment’s Tug-of-War Team at Simpson Barracks, Watsonia, c1989
These eight photos of the Army Survey Regiment’s Tug-of-War Team were most likely taken at Simpson Barracks, Watsonia in circa 1989. There is no information available on why the unit sent the team to Melbourne, the occasion, and the winner of this contest. It may have been a military athletics carnival held to commemorate Australia’s First Fleet bi- centenary, noting there was other members of Army Svy Regt on the bus who were not part of this team. The team’s coach was WO1 Ken Slater. Tug-of-War contests were very popular for the competitors and spectators, as they were often held at the Regiment as a component of inter-squadron athletics competitions, Flag Day verses the School of Military Survey, Bones Day verses the RAAF’s the School of Radio and a component of regimental training. These eight photos of the Army Survey Regiment’s Tug-of-War Team were most likely taken at a competition held at Simpson Barracks, Watsonia circa 1989. These two photographs of a contingent from the Army Survey Regiment lowering the Australian flag were taken on Australia Day in Kerang, Victoria on the 26th of January 1996. Most units of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) provide contingents to regional towns in their local area to assist in commemoration ceremonies on days of national significance, such as Australia Day, ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. This was most likely one of the last occasions before the closure of the Army Survey Regiment. The use of an improvised flagpole is unknown. These two photographs of a contingent from the Army Survey Regiment lowering the Australian flag, were taken on Australia Day in Kerang, Victoria on the 26th of January 1996. Book, Bart n Print Pty Ltd, Mystery at Moonlight Head, 2018
This book written by Alan McLean records the historical details concerning the wreck of the Fiji at Moonlight Head, Victoria in 1891. The ship was travelling from Hamburg and bound for Melbourne when it was wrecked at Moonlight Head. Twelve lives were lost and a subsequent enquiry found the captain to be guilty of negligence. Residents of Warrnambool and district had some connection to the wreck as Joseph Jordan, a Warrnambool photographer, took photographs of the wreck scene and was involved in a controversy regarding the late arrival of rescue equipment and residents from the Warrnambool area were charged with stealing some of the wrecked cargo. This book is of considerable local interest as the wreck of the Fiji was connected with Warrnambool and district and affected many local residents. This is a soft cover book of 176 pages. It has a cover with a blue background, some printed material and two colour photographs. The book contains an acknowledgement, an introduction, 21 chapters and appendices. It also contains black and white and colour illustrations, maps and other images. Book, Australian Milk and Cream Bottles, 2008
This book contains information on milk and cream bottles and other dairy-related items. It includes photographs of local milk and butter factories – Warrnambool (Allansford), Grassmere, Koroit, Garvoc, Glenormiston and Byaduk and references to Warrnambool milk suppliers – Antarctic Ice, Tooram and H Lindsay. No details have been found on H. Lindsay, selling milk in the 1920 to 1940 period. Antarctic Ice had a pasteurising plant in Kepler Street in the 1930s and sold to Warrnambool Cheese and Butter and Kraft in partnership and milk was sold under the new label, Sungold Dairies. They then purchased the Kaye Ryan pasteurizing plant in Verdon Street. Kraft moved out of the partnership with Warrnambool Cheese and Butter and Sungold Dairies relocated to the Allansford factory site where they still operate today. Tooram was the name of the property established in the Allansford area by the pioneer settler, John Allan. By the 1860s Tooram had becme well-known for its cheese making and in the 1880s Tooram, owned by Thomas Palmer, had what was described as the finest dairy farm in Victoria. This book is of interest as it contains information on milk and cream bottles and dairy-related items and Warrnambool is the centre of an important dairying industry with the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory in Allansford being the oldest existing dairy product factory in Australia. The book will be very helpful to researchers. This is a soft cover book of 224 pages. The cover has a red background with black printing and a colour image of five bottles and five other dairy-related items on the front cover and colour images of four bottles, a tin and three labels or signs on the back cover. The contents include text on milk and cream bottles and allied material and colour and black and white photographs. dairying in western district of victoria, warrnambool district dairying, history of warrnambool, sungold dairies, tooram -
