Pearce's Park is situated on the corner of Barkly and Gladstone Streets, Mount Pleasant (although it is sometimes described as being in Golden Point and Ballarat East). Isaiah Pearce was an owner of a goldmine and mayor. He built Clowance House in Barkly Street and chose not to build around Lake Wendouree as he thought it was snobbish. Since Pearce's death, the home has been a maternity hospital and a women’s boarding house. It includes a marble-effect entrance, fireplaces, ceilings and cornices. Colin COLAHAN (1897-1987) Born Australia Colin Colahan was a student of Max Meldrum, and was one of the first tonalist painters to have his work purchased by the National Gallery of Victoria. He contributed cartoons to 'The Bulletin'. Colahan was working in Paris in the 1920s and had a studio in Mont Martre. He returned to Melbourne by 1927. He next lived and worked in London in 1936 for the next 22 years. During World War Two his house in Chelsea was bombed and everything destroyed. Some photographs donated to Xavier College, his alma mater, are the only evidence of the destroyed work. Cola ham was an Australian War Artist after 1942, with over 90 of his works held by the Australian War Memorial. He moved permanently to Itsly in 1958. The Hepburn Pool was built in Spring Creek during the 1930s by the Zelmans of Bellinzona Guest House. Alberto Zelman paid for local workers to construct the pool to their specifications so the visitors to local guest houses could swim on hot days. The Hepburn Pool was used for the Victorian Swimming Championships, with 6 stones marked at one end for each lane. It is 50 yards long, the length required for competitions. In 1935 the Hepburn Amateur Swimming Club organised their first swimming carnival, the meeting conducted by the Victorian Amateur Swimming Association, In 1969 the Daylesford Olympic Swimming Pool was constructed so this 'old swimming pool' was neglected. Fortunately in 1993 local volunteers associated with the Savoia Hotel returned the pool to its former glory with the help of old photos and a lot of hard work. Two well known swimmers swam at the pool in the Victorian swimming Championships, they were Annette Kellerman and Frank Beaurepaire. The Pool was named Victoria's Favourite Built Place in 2004 as part of the Victorian Government's involvement in the International Year of the Built Environment. Ambrogio Invernizzi Was from San Giovanni Bianco in Italy, and was an original partner with Carlo Gervasoni, Luigi Gervasoni and Giuseppe Giupponi. They built the 'Old Stone House' at Yandoit Creek, that was later lived in by Carlo Gervasoni and his family. Ambrogio and his family living in a neighbouring drystone house. Ambrogio Invernizzi died in 1888, aged 56 years. Ambrogio Invernizzi was born at San Giovanni Bianco, the neighbouring town to San Gallo, the birth town of the Gervasoni Brothers. Schlossberg Vineyard was situated along Vineyard Road in Sunbury, between Winilba and the Calder Highway. It was established by Felix Frederick Bubeck, who arrived in Australia from Rotenberg (near Stuggart) in the 1860. In 1866 he acquired 60 acres of land on Bald Hill and established the vineyard. In 1880, claret produced on the property received an honourable mention when it was exhibited in Bordeaux, France,From the mid 1850s a number of vineyards were established on the hillsides overlooking Vineyard Road. The east facing outlook that captured the morning sun was ideal for growing grapevines. Cyril Leyshon White was an official war artist during the Gallipoli Campaign in WWI. He contributed a number of his sketches for “The ANZAC Book". After WWI he became a mentor to the young Sydney Nolan. Lt. White was a member of the 17th Garrison battalion attached to Tatura Camp 1. Landscape. Before 1941 "Hillside", McCartney's Road was associated with the Carroll Family. Patrick Edmund Carroll, his wife Mary Matilda Fitzgerald, and children Kathleen, Ronald and Rosemary were the last members of the family to live at and work "Hillside". Stanislaus Kelly and his wife Margaret (nee Gorman) bought the farm from the Carroll family. The couple raised six children on the land: May, Mary, Leo, Ray (Lofty), Daniel (Tich) and Bernadette. The family grew spuds and onions on the hill and milked cows, with the little dairy located on the eastern side of the house. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. This photograph c1905 is looking up from George Barber's house 'Forest Edge' on Barbers Road. 'Forest Edge' was built c1898 and was the home of George Barber and his wife Sarah Ann (nee Richardson). Edward John Price was a son of early settler Edward Joseph Price. Edward Joseph was the first settler in the Village Settlement when he took out Lot 1, Section 1. He built a small home of slabs and brought his family up in 1896. From the outset the Price family ran a store from their home.This picture, taken 1914, shows Edward John Price on his pony delivering papers from his parent's newsagency that was opposite 'Mountjoy' guesthouse on Ridge Road. He was taking them to Lily Badenhop's post office in Blythe's Road. Most likely a scene of 'Mt Calvin', the homestead built by John William (Willie) Richardson for his wife Jeanie Green of Wandin. The house was built c1898 The Rowse family purchased the house and 60 acres when Willie and Jeanie Richardson with their 3 children moved to Brisbane. The Rowse family farmed the 60 acres for 35 years and the house was demolished in 1938. The photograph is from the album of Ivy May Child. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made. Braco Park Guest House was owned by the aunts of Sir Keith Murdoch, Eliza and Grace. It became a Red Cross convalescent Home for nurses in 1918.It was sold to Mrs. Techow and renamed "Clovelly" in 1920. It had been the Murdoch sisters' guest house, Braco Park, that originally introduced Prime Minister Billy Hughes to the hills. Walter Murdoch's nephew Keith Murdoch, a young parliamentary reporter for the Age, took Hughes and several other politicians up there before the war. Keith's father had been a friend of the previous PM, Andrew Fisher. Keith Murdoch was sent to London as a reporter in 1915, and developed an influential relationship with Hughes who bought a small farm in Sassafras, and ran some of the business of government there during the war and after. Acquired by The Education Department about 1985, the Sherbrooke Community School was built, with the Clovelly house being stripped back to its frame and renovated to form the main building of the school.
