Document, Derryl Towers (deceased), Derryl Towers: Letter to the Editor (Draft), 1964, 12 January 1964
Derryl Towers wrote to the editor of the Colac Herald about his concerns about the proposal for a loan to create a new municipal workshop and Shire Engineer's office in the Apollo Bay riding. He made several points: a lack of attendance at the poll could bring the matter back to the Council table again; the representative of the Regional Committee is exploring some downward adjustment in Shire contributions; 2/3 of the Shire is reserved for water catchment or timber purposes, in effect a national asset; that the Council Sub-committee's report was sound; all Councillor's agree that new buildings are a necessity; and if we spend money on the loan to renovate old buildings what happens to the proposal for new buildings? Surrey Hills Golf Club operated from 1892-1908 then moved and became Riversdale Golf Club. The game was played across paddocks from Trafalgar Street, Mont Albert to Whitehorse Road and down Victoria Crescent to where Box Hill TAFE is now located in Elgar Road. There were problems with cows eating the tee flags! The clubhouse still exists as 30 Trafalgar Street. No 3 Beatty Street is in the background. The players are probably standing on what is now Zetland Road. This image is important not only for documentation of early sporting activities in the area but also for evidence of the pre-urban appearance of the landscape.Black and white photo with 2 ladies with golf clubs in the foreground and a lad (? caddy) with a golf bag under his arm. Large framed print of painting by Ivor Hele shows 17 Platoon 2/6th Infantry Battalion in an Italian trench during the attack on Bardia. Pamphlet, The Torch. The Sydney Legacy Appeals Fund Newsletter, 1990s
A newsletter from Sydney Legacy with six real life examples of the types of people Legacy help and what they have been able to achieve. It appears to have been published approximately 1990. Types of help given by Legatees included helping a widow's daughter buy her first car, providing a widow with a unit in the Legacy flats at Edgley Court, Petersham, providing allowance for text books for further study, also helping a disabled dependent swim in the Olympic Games also a Legacy holiday home for the widows to use. One widow talks about the widows' club and that 'you're never lonely. There's always someone who knows you.'A good summary of some of Legacy's work.Black and white A4 newsletter x 4 pages with some photos and stories of Legacy beneficiaries.Volume 3, Number 1promotion, widows clubs, sydney legacy -
Wodonga & District Historical Society Inc
Sign - Wodonga Railway Station Sign, c. 1880s to 1920s
The Wodonga train line opened in November 1873 when the section of the train line from Wangaratta to Wodonga was completed. A goods shed was built at this time in 1873 and a permanent train station was completed in 1874. The expansion of the railways to the northeast of Victoria occurred after the Victorian Government took over the railways in 1867 and the trains serviced large towns such as Seymour, Wangaratta and Wodonga, as well as smaller towns along the way. The Tallangatta and Cudgewa train lines from Wodonga were built in stages from the 1880s to the 1920s in what is considered to be some of the most challenging landscape for railways. The Cudgewa line was opened in 1921, so the Wodonga train station sign dates from this period. The Wodonga train station sign has local and state significance due to its use in Wodonga in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as part of the expansion of the Victorian Railways in the northeast of the state.Old painted wooden sign from the Wodonga train station with the directions for changing to the Tallangatta and Cudgewa train line in light coloured paint on a black painted background."WODONGA / CHANGE FOR / TALLANGATTA & CUDGEWA / LINE" wodonga railway station, wodonga train station, tallangatta train line, cudgewa train line, railway signs, victorian railways signs -

Melbourne Legacy
Document - Menu card, The One and Only Dono, 1958
The dinner took place on Tuesday 25th November 1958 at The Naval and Military Club; there is no indication of what the occasion might have been. The two caricatures are clearly of the same person and are signed by Pat Hanna, in the same style as the drawings in 01293 and 01290, it is possible that 'Donno' might have been Donovan Joynt though his name isn't in the autographs. (Donovan Joynt was a prominent original Legatee and VC winner in France in 1918, and looks similar to the drawing). It may not have been an official Legacy occasion but simply a gathering of Legatees at the Naval and Military Club. The artist Pat Hanna was a founding member of Melbourne Legacy. Legacy kept some of his works in the archive. As well as demonstrating the conviviality of Legatees, it attests to the food usually offered at dinners in the 1950s. The 'Papa au Rum' listed for dessert might have been a misprint for 'Baba au Rhum' which was popular at the time. Printed and folded menu card, black on white, with the menu printed in purple by a spirit duplicator; two handrawn blue ballpoint caricatures, autographed in blue biro by participants.14 autographs: F.Meldrum, James G. Gillespie, Frank Doolan, Aaron Beattie, Pat Hanna, J Wallace, R. Mitchell, Brian Armstrong, and the rest illegible. In black ink: 'The One & Only DONO' underlined on back page,' DONNO THE ONE & ONLY' inside front cover.comradeship, donovan joynt, hanna -

Photo of what appears to be a picnic in the bush with Holmbush children and legatees, possibly in the 1940s. In the second photo the matron is the seated lady in the hat sitting between two girls and is believed to be Dorothy Farmer, names of the children and legatees are not known. Also some of the cars that took them on the outing. Similar photos of another picnic are at 02347. From a photo album which contains photos of Holmbush and some of the excursions and events that happened there, appears to have been put together in the 1940s. Including trips to the zoo and picnics. RVIB Auxiliaries raised monies for the organisation at a grassroots level, via a variety of meetings, fundraisers and events. To keep them in touch with head office and to let branches what other branches were doing across the state, regular newsletters were sent out. In the September newsletter, the Rebecca Ryan concert was advertised, the closure of Rochester, Quambatook and Berwick is mentioned, as well the 70th anniversary of Korumburra and Leongatha, Portland, Traralgon and Winchelsea, a list of service badges and certificates and the passing of various members is also listed. For December, a temporary editor was appointed and a new design began to emerge. The Carols by Candlelight concert and changes to staffing at RVIB were the focus of this newsletter.29 pages of text and imagesroyal victorian institute for the blind, rebecca ryan, auxiliaries -

Holiday Yardage Mambo, David Bowers, (exact); 2003
MEDIUM: Acrylic on paper. DESCRIPTION: Image ranges from dark brown to pale brown with white. Light colored timber, outer frame with glass covering, white board and an inner frame. A very busy piece full of activity, starting from the bottom left we have an areoplane which is perhaps how this vacation begins, the sun sits above it and a bikini clad woman who has arrived to her destination is placed above the sun. There is cruise ship, a martini glass and a whale embracing the outer scene. Waves, a surfer, a marlin and a small guitar sit at the lower right. A large car takes the viewer to the centre of the picture where we come across a giant guitar. The music is what matters, this piece dances about the canvas in mushroom pinks and chocolates. Little outlines of fish fill the gaps. A very beachy scene. The image lyes quite flat to the eye, rough stick outlines of the images above. Document - MINING ACCIDENTS - SHOCKING ACCIDENT AT WILSON'S REEF
Handwritten extract from the Bendigo Advertiser dated Friday 6th Feb. 1874 Page 2 when Thomas Bromley, engine driver at Wilson's Reef Coy, Marong was killed when he got caught in the flywheel. He had set the engine going pulling up a cage of mullock, then went away from the engine, One of the cages was pulled to the top of the poppet heads without him knowing. The wire rope broke and the cage fell down the shaft, no one was injured. The engine was still going, the braceman ran into the engine-room and told Bromley what had happened. Bromley stopped the engine to reverse the gear. He had loosened the screws and was rising from a stooping position when he was caught by the flywheel. It was thought that Bromley had started the engine, the rushed to the boiler to throw in a few pieces of wood and before he got back the cage had gone to the top of the poppet heads.document, gold, mining accidents, mining accidents, shocking accident at wilson's reef, bendigo advertiser 6/2/1874, thomas bromley -

National Wool Museum
Book - Wool Sample, 1961
The donor, Brian Licence, assembled this Wool Sample Book while studying at the Gordon Institute from 1960-62. Brian studied Wool Classing and worked for a decade in this profession before moving to Melbourne which required him to change careers. The National Wool Museum accepted a donation from Brian in 2022 of several mementoes relating to his career in the wool industry. This wool sample book joins a collection of 8 others within the museum’s collection, with the oldest dating to 1870 at the time of writing in 2022. Large black bound book with ribbon for fastening containing 12 double-sided blue pages. Pages have several samples of shorn wool mounted and annotated to include information such as specific breeding, shearing faults, and geographical area. The book concludes with four pages without wool samples. Two of these pages relate to plans for a shearing shed and other industry related structures. The final two-pages relate to the anatomy of a sheep. Wool sample books were constructed by Wool Classing students at the Gordon Technical School as examples of what to look for when classing wool. The students were tasked with constructing these books with samples they retrieved themselves from several different farms and animals. The book would serve as a reference point for the wool classers throughout their years in the field, it was always on hand to refresh knowledge. This book was constructed by Brian Licence over his schooling at the Gordon between 1960 and 1962. Front Cover. Handwritten, White Ink "Wool Sample / Book. 1961”wool classing, gordon technical college, brian licence -
