Charles Leslie Mitton (1905-1968) was a pharmacist at 131 Union Road, Surrey Hills from 1933-1968. DOD 30/04/1968. Prior to coming to Surrey Hills, he was a pharmacist in Newmarket (Ref: 1931 electoral roll). He and his wife, Ethel Sylvia Elizabeth Mitton (nee Stevenson) lived at 65 Union Road. They were married in 1933 and had 2 sons and a daughter. He was followed in the business by his son John and daughter Rosalind. The paper is yellowed and stained along the top edge. It is generally grubby. It appears to have been framed at some stage but not for some time. It has been folded in four. The Wodonga Pharmacy was opened on 8 September 1952 at 166 High Street, Wodonga by Albury chemist Mr. Arthur Fussell. The building had previously been Charlie Edmonson's white goods store. A year later it was acquired by Mr. Ken Moir who had moved from Shepparton, Victoria to manage the business. The original premises were sold so the business moved to 176 High Street in 1954. Thomas' pharmacy operated from Fairy Street in Warrnambool, initially from 90 fairy Street on the corner of Fairy and Koroit Streets then later moving to 140 Fairy Street on the corner of Fairy and Lava Streets. Mrs W L Hobson is noted as the pharmacist in the 1970's. Olive oil in the 1970's was used primarily to moisten and cleanse dry skin.It has also been used as a laxative. It is generally well tolerated and considered safe for skin care for babies. A commonly used product which has multiple uses.Clear glass bottle with long narrowed neck. REF: SHNN article Oct/Nov 1991: Pharmacy was purchased from Mr Nye by C L Mitton in 1933; later moved to 139 Union Road. Research: Stanley Morris Nye (born Ballarat in 1889, son of a Methodist minister; served AIF in WW1) moved to Surrey Hills from Auburn after 1922. He was the first occupant of 131 Union Road which was built in 1924. He is listed in the 1924,1927 and 1931 electoral rolls at 86 Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills. He died aged 44 years in December 1933 and Charles Leslie Mitton took over the business. Charles Leslie Mitton was practising in Newmarket prior to taking over the pharmacy in 1933, the year he also married Ethel Sylvia Stevenson. They lived at 65 Union Road until c1940 when they moved to Kenmare Street, Box Hill North. This photograph is part of a series taken at the Willsmere (Kew) Mental Hospital. The photographs were gifted to the Kew Historical Society in 2018 by Rosemary Barnes. The photos had been in the possession of her former husband, Dr Fred Stamp, the last medical superintendent of the hospital. In 2019, the photographs were transferred to the State Archives as Permanent Government Records, as the Society is only entitled as a Class-B Place of Deposit to hold Temporary Government Records. The Society was permitted to keep and publish a digital copy of each photograph. Many of the photographs include information on the reverse about individuals or locations. Where this is the case, these have been published here as images that can be viewed in the picture carousel. In the photograph, Dennis Varigos is photographed in his Richmond pharmacy with his grandson. At the start of the Second World War, he enlisted in the Australian Army and then transferred to the Royal Australian Air Force where he served from 1940 - 1946. Upon his return, Dennis was granted entry into the Pharmacy College under the Returned Soldiers Repatriation Educational Scheme. He completed his degree and started a successful pharmacy career with businesses in Collins Street, and other pharmacies in Richmond and Prahran. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries.
