The postcards are addressed to Mrs Dickson, Miss Weeks, Mrs Kiernan and include one from Fred Hall AIF 1915 from Egypt. Miss Weeks was possibly Bertha Alma Weeks 1873-1952, m. George Patrick Kiernan, 1877-1961. There were several Mrs Dickson's including Emma ( nee Wainwright), who was married in 1900 to Archibald John Dickson (1855-1930) and Laura (nee Kreymborg), who was married in 1901 to James Thomas Dickson (1864-1911). The parents of Archibald and James Thomas were Euphemia (nee Brown) 1826-1907 and James T. Dickson (1853-1897). Postcards were ideal for short messages, they were cheap to buy and post, and they moved through rapidly improving transport networks. They are interesting contemporary records of places gone, architecture gone and people gone. This item reflects a contemporary form of communication in the early 20th century.Two cardboard covered albums containing post card collections. It was probably one of a collection of commercial post cards available to tourists or East Gippsland residents to send to friends or relatives. Cameras in the early 20th century were not a common family possession and a postcard was a common souvenir and way of sending a short message.Between 1901 and 1914 a wide range of subjects were recorded by often anonymous artists and photographers and published by everyone from major companies to enthusiastic individuals. As a result, postcards provide a comprehensive resource for anyone interested in how our forebears lived, laughed and loved one hundred years ago. The church is architecturally, historically, socially and spiritually significant to the Shire of Nillumbik. Why is it significant? The church is architecturally significant as a finely detailed example of a brick 19th century rural community church, one of only four in the Shire (Criteria E & B). The church is historically significant as an important link with the time when Eltham was a small, insular country settlement. Also for the historical evolution visible in the complex, with the modest 1880s church and larger red brick rear hall from the early 20th century as a reflection of population growth in the area (Criterion A). The church is historically, spiritually and socially significant because it has played, and continues to play, an important part in the spiritual and social life of the community (Criterion G) - Victorian Heritage Register. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' The Church was built by George Stebbings in the 1850s and is an example of fine craftmanship. The Reynolds/ Prior collection of photographs were taken by Tom Prior, the maternal uncle of Ivy Reynolds, around 1900 and the 60 photos in the album give a fine overview of many of the landmarks of Research and Eltham over 100 years ago. lvy lived in the family home for many years at 106 Thompson Cres Research. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. The photographs are a reminder of the rural nature of Research and Eltham and its rich heritage. This plate was painted by J.J. Forrester in 1922. John James Forrester, the son of John Lamb Forrester and Maria Hexter, was an architect in Warrnambool in the early 20th century. He had an office in Kepler Street (1910) and in Koroit Street (1916). He lived in the house in Liebig Street that was formerly the first Savings Bank and was erected in 1860 (7A Liebig Street today). Forrester was a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church and was the co-architect for the re-building of the interior of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool after it was destroyed by fire in 1920. John Forrester was also a noted artist of his time and several of his works of art have survived. A landscape by him is in the possession of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This plate is one of two painted by Forrester that survive today.This plate, although damaged, is of interest because it was painted by John James Forrester, a Warrnambool artist from the early 20th century. This is a china plate showing a seascape painted by John James Forrester in 1922. It depicts a coastal scene of rocks, birds and sailing boats. The colours are in mauve/brown/ white tonings and are slightly opalescent. The plate has brown/grey handles with one broken and repaired. A window sash is a type of moveable window frame that can slide, usually vertically. Unlike a window frame built into the wall, a sash allows glass window panes to slide up and down. The sashes fit inside a track that runs along another window frame attached to the house. Lead weights traditionally counterbalanced sashes, but today they are counterbalanced by springs. The traditional sash window is double-hung; this means it has two sashes that can both slide along a vertical track. However, some sash windows have a single moveable sash, and sashes may slide horizontally. A sash usually contains panels of glass, called lights. The lights are traditionally held together by a grid of bars. The sash window was developed in 17th century England and allowed for greater airflow. The sash window has had a significant impact on western architecture, used in nearly every style of English domestic architecture since the late 17th century. The subject item is a template used by the carpenter to mark or scribe the vertical track in which to window will slide up and down.An item used when sash windows were made by hand from the 17th to the early 20th century. Artificial glass first appeared in the Egyptian or the Mesopotamian civilization, whereas they used tools made out of volcanic glass obsidian in the Stone Age. Ancient China, however, discovered how to make glass a little later. Glass beads are known to be one of the earliest products made out of glass. Their creation is thought to be primarily accidental. In the later Bronze Age, glassmaking came to a halt. Glass was a luxury material back then. Archaeological excavations suggest the use of glass in England during the middle ages. In the 10th century, stained glass found a place in cathedrals and windows of palaces. After the Renaissance, architectural methods changed substantially, leading to a decrease in stained glass as a building material. Domestic use of glass increased following the industrial revolution. Vessels, glass windows, and glass beads gained popularity in Europe during this period. During the 19th century, many people preferred glass windows and doors as a decorative option.
