Adelaide Vale Homestead was begun in 1853 by John Harvey and was later occupied by Edward and Andrew O'Keefe. The building comprises a series of single storey stone buildings arranged behind a simple composed, verandah facade with a centrally located doorway flanked by windows. A central corridor leads from this doorway to a transverse corridor which was probably once an open breezeway. A free- standing octagonal pavilion is located close to the house. This is an interesting homestead dating from early times and constructed of local stone. The front facade is typically composed and the plan reflects the continuous growth of the property throughout the nineteenth century. The octagonal pavillion is a significant and unusual feature. The homestead is picturesquely sited and overlooks the Campaspe River valley, the Burke and Wills expedition camped nearby on their ill-fated expedition north. The old cheese factory is the sole survivor of the once extensive out-buildings. Some of the nineteenth century buildings have been demolished and there have been some later additions and alterations, notably an extensive side wing added in the 1920's. The original Barnedown Run consisted of 51,280 acres and was first taken up in 1839 by Henry Grey Bennett and was held under "Pre-emptive right" until it was subdivided in 1856 into Muskerry and Mt. Pleasant. In 1853 John Harney arrived in Australia and took up storekeeping at White Hills. In 1855 he took up land which was originally part of Barnedown Run and erected part of the present homestead. In 1860 Harney entertained Bourke and Wills exploration party at Adelaide Vale on the Campaspe River. Mr Harney owned a Hotel which was burnt down in 1861. P. S. Adelaide was a logging steamer operating between Echuca and Barmah forest. It was built in 1866 by G. Linklater, Echuca. Original owner J. G. Grassie, Poon Boon Station & S. H. Officer, Murray Downs Station. In June 1891 she was purchased by Murray River Sawmills and spent most of her working life on the Barmah Forest run. In 1960 she was purchased by Echuca Apex Club and steamed to Echuca. Installed on a bed of cement in Hopwood Gardens, Echuca before being restored to be refloated as a significant addition to the Port of Echuca maritime fleet (Parsons, R. Ships of the Inland Rivers. 2005. p.46)The P.S Adelaide is extremely significant as it it the oldest known wooden hulled paddle steamer in the world. She was built in Echuca in 1866 and still operates on the Murray River today. The kit bag was used by James Thomas Alfred Ralph, who was born in South Australia on 25 September 1897. He enlisted for service in the First World War on 17 May 1918 in Adelaide with the Australian Medical Corps General Reinforcements. He was allocated the service number 20568 and embarked from Adelaide on the HMT Gaika on 6 August 1918. He arrived in London, England on the 13 October 1918 and allocated to the Australian Army Medical Corps Training Depot. He transferred as a medical officer to the 1st Australian Hospital (Hayfield?) on 2 December 1918, and was attached to the 1st Australian Army Hospital (Sutton Vale?) in January 1919. He returned to Australia in Febuary 1920 on the Cape Verde as nursing staff. He was discharged from service in Adelaide on 17th March 1920.Tan coloured canvas kit bag used by a member of the Australian Army Medical Corps during World War 1. The tubular kit bag has 12 brass eyelets placed around its opening, and is reinforced with a second layer of canvas at its base. The kit bag has a side stitched seam, stiching around the base and top opening. A circular lightweight tan canvas flap is stitched to the top opening at the side seam.On the side if the kit bag is a red cross on a white background, surrounded by a circular yellow line. It also has the numbers 20568, with the words JAS.T. A. RALPH, A.A.M.C, A.I.F., AND 4.M.D. The base of the kit bag has a map of Australia in black ink, with 4.M.D printed in black ink above the map. A Vale notice that was published in the Bulletin in 1975 on the death of Legatee Oswald Gawler. He joined Legacy in Adelaide in 1929 and was president of Melbourne Legacy in 1943. He served on the Co-ordinating Council for many years. In World War One he had served on Gallipoli and in France and Belgium. In 1917 he was severely gassed which impacted his health and eyesight in later years His professional career was as an actuary and his forecasts helped make many policy decisions in Legacy.
