... Scanned negatives of photographs taken by a Sunshine Advocate photographer.......The Advocate...Albans - Self Bros Supermarket (Sun Adv 64.3) 1993 Photo 02.JPG Scanned negatives of photographs taken by a Sunshine Advocate photographer. Photograph 18 East Esplanade - Festival Supermarket Sharon Walker The Advocate ...The Self family story begins with two sisters, not the brothers. In 1932, Margery and Edna Self took over Mrs Magee’s confectionery shop on Main Road West. They expanded the business by purchasing Mr Hounslow’s petrol bowser. In 1934, the Self family built a new general store at 18 East Esplanade, St. Albans which became the foundation of the future Self Bros Supermarket. The family lived in a house behind the shop. The name Self Bros & Goddard emerged when Bernice Self married Alfred Goddard in 1947. By 1955, the directory lists Self Bros & Goddard Storekeepers and later in 1960 to 1974 as Licensed Grocers. This marks the shift from a family general store to a major grocery business Later years it became the Festival Supermarket and subsequently the St. Albans SUPA IGA Supermarket. This collection of photographs captures the various names the supermarket was known as Self Bros, Foodtown and Festival IGA Supermarket.5657.01 - East Esplanade 18 - Festival Supermarket (Sun Adv 237.3) 1993 Photo 01.JPG 5657.02 - East Esplanade 18 - Festival Supermarket (Sun Adv 237.3) 1993 Photo 02.JPG 5657.03 - East Esplanade 18 - Festival Supermarket (Sun Adv 237.3) 1993 Photo 03.JPG 5657.04 - East Esplanade 18 St. Albans - Self Bros Supermarket (Sun Adv 64.3) 1993 Photo 01.JPG 5657.05 - East Esplanade 18 St. Albans - Self Bros Supermarket (Sun Adv 64.3) 1993 Photo 02.JPG east esplanade, st. albans, festival supermarket, self bros, iga, alfred goddard -

Photograph Errington Reserve Palm Tree Planting The Advocate Sharon Walker ...In 1910, Alice Errington donated six acres of land to the people of St Albans. The land donated was located on the south side of Boundary Road (Now Main Road East), which was the border between the Shire of Braybrook and the Shire of Keilor, In reality, the community was one, and Alice intended the land provide recreation facilities for both the Shire of Braybrook and the Shire of Keilor residents. In 1929, the reserve trustees decided to vest the land to the Shire of Braybrook Council due to ongoing rate costs, liability for road construction costs and the need for formal municipal management. The memorial wrought iron gates were added later and are one of the few early memorials in St Albans that have a tangible link to the pioneer era of the district. Over the years the reserve has seen various landscaping design changes, and various sporting club rooms and community buildings added. This photograph taken in 1993, captures the planting of a Canary Island tree in the reserve to reflect the 1920's - 1940's civic planting trends. As of the 8th January 2026 this tree is still alive and growing in the reserve. Errington Reserve is one of the few reserves created by a private donation, and one of the earliest examples of a woman shaping public space in the St. Albans district.5658 - Errington Reserve Palm Tree Planting (Sun Adv 203.3) 1993 Photo 02.JPGmain road east, st. albans, errington reserve, alice errington -

... Scanned negative of photograph taken by a Sunshine Advocate photographer....The Advocate...Albans The Advocate Sharon Walker ...The first St. Albans post office opened in 1888, just one year after the township was established in 1887. At this time, St Albans was little more than a railway station, a handful of houses, and Alfred Padley’s speculative subdivision. The location of the first post office changed over time, from the Railway Station to general stores and to the site on the corners of Main Road West and McKechnie Street. During the 1980's and 1990's, as the commercial centre of St. Albans shifted towards Alfrieda Street, on the east side of the railway line, Australian Post moved its post office closer to Alfrieda Street. To meet the needs of the St. Albans residents, Australia Post moved to a new location closer to the new St. Albans commercial centre. ... Scanned negative of photograph taken by a Sunshine Advocate photographer....The Advocate...Albans The Advocate Sharon Cavanagh ...This local milk bar & mixed business was the local SWING Soft Drinks distributor. SWING was a local Australian soft‑drink company, likely family‑run, producing Lemonade, Cola, Orange, Portello, Creamy soda and other classic flavours of the era. SWING operated during the peak era of small bottlers (1950s–1970s), when nearly every town had its own soft‑drink works. These small manufacturers disappeared during the industry collapse of the 1980's and 1990's, when Coca‑Cola, Pepsi, and Schweppes bought out or out‑competed most independents. This photographs captures the demand for the local SWING soft drinks in the early 1990's.5663 - Main Rd East Cnr McArthur St Shops 1991 (Sun Adv 485) Photo 01.JPGmain road east, mcarthur street, st. albans, swing -

Photograph St. Albans Railway Station The Advocate Ken Irwin ...These photographs are of the St. Albans Railway Station when the electrification of the line terminated at the St. Albans Railway Station. In 1991, the station was located on the city side of Main Road West and the level crossing was still in operational. It wasn't until 2012, when the line was fully electrified to Sunbury as part of the Sunbury Electrification Project. The level crossing was removed in 2016 as part of the Victorian Government Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP).The train pictured is a Hitachi Train, or commonly referred to as the Silver Train. They were Melbourne’s iconic stainless‑steel suburban trains, introduced from 1972 and running until 2014. These trains were the last of Victoria's fleet not to have air conditioning, and by the 2000's, they no longer met contemporary safety and accessibility standards. The Hitachi trains had replaced the Harris trains, also referred as the Blue Train or Bluey. The Harris trains were taken out of service because they contained asbestos. Photograph Whitten Bridge Construction Sunshine North The Advocate C. ...The Whitten Bridge, originally called the Maribyrnong River Bridge was built between 1992 and 1994. The purpose of the bridge was to carry the newly built Western Ring Road (now the M80) across the Maribyrnong River at Sunshine North. The bridge is named after Edward James “Ted” Whitten OAM, better known as Ted Whitten or by his nickname "Mr Football", one of the most iconic figures in Australian Rules Football. These photographs show the original configuration of the roadway, which consisted of two separate structures: a Northbound Bridge and a Southbound Bridge. In 2018, as part of the M80 widening project, the two bridges were stitched together to form a single, unified structure. This upgrade increased capacity from three lanes to five lanes in each direction.5670.01 - Whitten Bridge Construction (Sun Adv 506.2) 1993 Photo 01.JPG 5670.02 - Whitten Bridge Construction (Sun Adv 506.2) 1993 Photo 02.JPG 5670.03 - Whitten Bridge Construction (Sun Adv 506.2) 1993 Photo 03.JPG 5670.04 - Whitten Bridge Construction (Sun Adv 506.2) 1993 Photo 04.JPGwhitten bridge, sunshine north, western ring road, maribyrnong river bridge, m80 -
