The series of 5 photographs feature different views of the Woodlands housing development which opened up land bounded by Gap and Anderson Roads, Cornish Street and Elizabeth Drive in the early 1990s. The H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens were established in 1909 and are Australia's oldest remaining industrial gardens. The heritage-listed gardens on Anderson Road were established by H.V. McKay as Sunshine Gardens later taken over by Brimbank City Council and renamed the H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens. The development of the gardens was not only an expression of H.V. McKay's own social philosophy but also represented a changing attitude to Urban Planning that is known as the "Garden Suburb" movement. Designed by the assistant city engineer at Ballarat, F. A. Horsfall and laid out by head gardener S. G. Thompson, the eight-acre gardens were sited alongside the factory and incorporated recreation facilities and popular horticultural displays.H.V. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in June 1993, document the aftermath of an accident at the Anderson Road level crossing on the Bendigo Railway Line. A car became stuck on the tracks and was struck by a freight train, splitting the vehicle in two. The driver was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries and extensive bruising, and a second vehicle was also damaged in the collision. The Sunshine Gardens became officially known as the H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens in 1953, when the Sunshine Council formally adopted the name to commemorate H.V. McKay, who had died in 1926. That’s the moment the gardens shifted from simply being “the Sunshine Gardens” or “the factory gardens” to a named memorial landscape.In 1991, a conservation strategy plan was prepared to protect the garden's historical significance. ‘Reno’, stood on the east side of St John’s Parade. Its earliest recorded owner was the architect Samuel Cocking who lived there from c.1865 until his death in 1888. The original landholding was bordered by Cotham Road, Glenferrie Road, Wellington Street, and Charles Street. The southern portion of this land included a fine orchard, with many imported trees. The old summer house, at first in the orchard, was later removed to the house garden. The MMBW Detail Plan No.1576 (1904) shows the remaining portion of the original land holding, including a semi-circular pathway at the front, and garden features such as an aviary, a fountain and grotto, and a fernery. The garden including rare plants supplied by Baron Von Mueller, surrounds the cottage in a tangled frenzy. Henty House, formerly ‘Roxeth’, is a Gothic Revival house, now a part of Trinity Grammar. It was built by 1856 for George Lewis. ‘Roxeth’ was purchased by James Henty in 1863. He gifted it to his son’s wife, Frances Emma Henty (nee Murphy), daughter of Sir Francis Murphy, as her marriage settlement after she and Herbert James Henty married in 1861. The cottage originally built in Anderson Road on the corner of Fraser Court and facing the T intersection of Neill Street and Anderson Road. It was possibly built in the 1960s but was demolished in the 2000s to make way for unit development as the original house occupied a very large block of land.Many of the older smaller houses built on large housing blocks in the old part of Sunbury are being demolished to make way for denser housing.A non-digital coloured photograph of a partial view of a small weatherboard cottage with a low pitched corrugated roof.
