The H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens were established in 1909 and are Australia's oldest remaining industrial gardens. The heritage-listed gardens on Anderson Road were established by H.V. McKay as Sunshine Gardens later taken over by Brimbank City Council and renamed the H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens. The development of the gardens was not only an expression of H.V. McKay's own social philosophy but also represented a changing attitude to Urban Planning that is known as the "Garden Suburb" movement. Designed by the assistant city engineer at Ballarat, F. A. Horsfall and laid out by head gardener S. G. Thompson, the eight-acre gardens were sited alongside the factory and incorporated recreation facilities and popular horticultural displays.H.V. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in June 1993, document the aftermath of an accident at the Anderson Road level crossing on the Bendigo Railway Line. A car became stuck on the tracks and was struck by a freight train, splitting the vehicle in two. The driver was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries and extensive bruising, and a second vehicle was also damaged in the collision. The images capture the scene immediately following the impact and the response efforts at the site, providing a visual record of an incident that later contributed to safety reviews and infrastructure upgrades along the corridor.Site of accident last night Anderson Road railway crossing 8th June 1993 238.3anderson road, sunshine level crossing, sunshine

Sunshine Furniture Discounts was one of those classic west‑side discount furniture shops that served Sunshine’s working‑class and migrant families from the late 1970s through the 1990s. It wasn’t a boutique showroom, it was a practical, affordable, no‑nonsense place where people bought the furniture they needed to build their homes. The significance of the store comes from how it supported the nearby community by providing practical, affordable, no‑nonsense furniture.Sunshine Furniture Discounts 105 Anderson Road Sunshine 1991 222.2sunshine furniture discounts, anderson road, sunshine

The Sunshine Gardens became officially known as the H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens in 1953, when the Sunshine Council formally adopted the name to commemorate H.V. McKay, who had died in 1926. That’s the moment the gardens shifted from simply being “the Sunshine Gardens” or “the factory gardens” to a named memorial landscape. In 1991, a conservation strategy plan was prepared to protect the garden's historical significance. The garden was first planted in 1909.Photograph of sign and trees H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens Anderson Road Sunshineh.v. mckay gardens, h.v. mckay memorial gardens, anderson road, sunshine

Parsons & Lewis was the horse‑hair curling factory that operated on Graham Street (Now part of Anderson Rd), Sunshine (then Braybrook Junction). The Co-Founders of the company were Edmund “Ted” Parsons (1855–1918) & Richard Lewis (d1909). The business was founded in 1887 and shifted to the Graham Street site in 1901. Richard Lewis died of anthrax, a known occupational hazard in hair‑processing industries. The factory was deliberately placed on the banks of Kororoit Creek because large volumes of water were required for the horse‑hair curling process. Horsehair was washed, sorted, curled, dried, and baled, a labor-intensive process requiring skilled “drafters,” curlers, and spinners. The factory processed animal hair for use in brushes and upholstery. In 1988, the business was relocated to a site in Kensington. The Parsons & Lewis Horse Hair Curling Factory was one of the most important early industrial sites in Sunshine’s heritage landscape. The Parsons family became one of the most respected families in Sunshine, both socially and civically. Their reputation was built over three generations, combining industrial contribution, community service, and local leadership.Parsons & Lewis Horsehair Drawers and Curlersparsons & lewis, factory, parsons, graham street, anderson road, sunshine

‘Reno’, stood on the east side of St John’s Parade. Its earliest recorded owner was the architect Samuel Cocking who lived there from c.1865 until his death in 1888. The original landholding was bordered by Cotham Road, Glenferrie Road, Wellington Street, and Charles Street. The southern portion of this land included a fine orchard, with many imported trees. The old summer house, at first in the orchard, was later removed to the house garden. The MMBW Detail Plan No.1576 (1904) shows the remaining portion of the original land holding, including a semi-circular pathway at the front, and garden features such as an aviary, a fountain and grotto, and a fernery. The garden including rare plants supplied by Baron Von Mueller, surrounds the cottage in a tangled frenzy. Despite a ‘local significance’ classification by the National Trust, the house was demolished in 1977.Partial view, north side of the weatherboard cottage in St John's Parade, Kew, known as 'Reno' (demolished 1977). Architectural elements revealed in this photo by John T Collins include: two wing, hip roof construction; external buildings at angles to main wing; corrugated iron roofing [over shingles]; brick chimney external to building; unvarnished/unpainted external weatherboards. General dilapidated condition. "Kew 'Reno' 10 St Johns Pde / John Collins, 11 Anderson Road, Hawthorn East, 3123, Film 35B Exposure 27"reno - st john's parade -- kew (vic.), john t collins

Henty House, formerly ‘Roxeth’, is a Gothic Revival house, now a part of Trinity Grammar. It was built by 1856 for George Lewis. ‘Roxeth’ was purchased by James Henty in 1863. He gifted it to his son’s wife, Frances Emma Henty (nee Murphy), daughter of Sir Francis Murphy, as her marriage settlement after she and Herbert James Henty married in 1861. It was purchased by the school in 1906.Black and White photographic positive by John Collins (1907-2001) of 'Roxeth' in Charles Street."Kew 'Roxeth' Trinity Grammar School, Charles St /John Collins, 11 Anderson Road, Hawthorn East, 3123 - Film 396 Exposure 3A"henty house -- trinity grammar school, roxeth, george lewis, herbert james henty
