On the 5th of December 1997, the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV), incorporating Osteoporosis Victoria (OV), recognised several of its volunteer members with an Oustanding Service Award. The annual volunteers' celebration, which coincided with International Volunteers' Day, was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Lou Richards (1923-2017), former player and captain of the Collingwood football team, was the special guest. In this photo, award recipients pose for a group photo while holding their awards. In 1990 MAJ Bob Williams was the OC of Technical Development Cell. He won first prize for his entry ‘Innovations in Cartographic Communication’ in the individual category at the 2nd Australian Institute of Cartographers and BHP Engineering Technology Research and Development Awards. The award was announced at the 1990 Australian Cartographic Conference in Darwin where MAJ Williams presented his entry. At the time he had completed PhD studies at the Australian Defence Academy and was the first Survey Corps officer to complete studies at this advanced level. Also, in 1990 the Royal Australian Survey Corps’ meritorious achievements were formally recognised by the Senate of the Australian Parliament in a Notice of Motion on 31st of May 1990. The Royal Australian Survey Corps also featured in the issue of a commemorative stamped envelope issued by Australia Post. These achievements are covered in more detail in page 147 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. Peter Nicholaas Wurtheim Wallinga was born in the Netherlands in 1929, and emigrated to Australia in 1939. In 1963-4 he purchased a block of land and built a house at 44 Sackville Street, Kew. A company director, he was elected to Council in August 1973. His first term as Mayor began in August 1976. When Cr Wallinga was re-elected Mayor in 1980-1, he was also the newly elected President of Kew Lions Club. During his two mayoral terms, Cr Wallinga attended many functions representing the City of Kew, opening events, presenting awards and leading the Council in decision-making. When he retired from Council in 1982, he continued to live in Sackville Street until January 1992, when he moved to Mitcham. The Eagle Award was introduced by Wodonga City Council to recognise people within the community who volunteered in a variety of ways to support others and make Wodonga a better and positive community. The Award was granted each month for many years. Uta Wiltshire was recognised as Wodonga's August Eagle Award recipient in 2010. She worked tirelessly for her community by contributing many hours of voluntary work each week for a number of organisations and people. At that time she was Secretary and Treasurer of the Wodonga Historical Society, a member of the Wodonga Show Auxiliary and a recently retired member of the Show Society Committee. In her spare time, she visited aged people in their homes, hospitals and hostels. Uta was also an active member of Neighbourhood Watch, a teacher's assistant in remedial studies at St Augustine's Primary School and a donor to the Australian Red Cross. Uta had also been selected as Wodonga Citizen of the Year in 2018 and is a Life Member of Wodonga & District Historical Society.This item is significant because it was awarded by Wodonga City Council in recognition of the voluntary service to the Wodonga community by a valued Life Member of Wodonga & District Historical Society.A wine glass inscribed with the name of the recipient of the Wodonga Eagle Award. Bendigo Sports Star Awards began back in March 1965 and were known as the Caltex Sports Star Awards. The first recipient was Eaglehawk cyclist Frank McCaig and the Awards have grown in stature ever since.
