Purchased in Austria in 1937 by donor's father as a present for his wife. The vendors stated only two bags were made like this. The second bag was sold to Queen Mary, the mother of King George V1.Rural scenes both side of bag. Clothing. Navy blue velvet, on a brass frame, with a 34 cm long brass chain. A ''push-button'' 1.2 cm diameter, fastens the bag. A decorative, oval brass loop is attached to the centre of the frame. The velvet fabric is tightly gathered onto the frame. One side panel of the bag is exquisitely embroidered in a ''corded'' floral design, in pink, blue and greens. The bag is lined with a smokey blue watermark silk, with a flat pocket on one side. This bag was used in the 1950s by Mrs Annette Lord, and was part of a large collection she donated when helping found Mont de Lancey Historic Homestead. Annette and her husband were large travellers and often bought their clothes and accessories while overseas. This silver mesh bag closely matches other 1950s Whiting and Davis bags - a U.S. company who became incredibly fashionable in America and Europe after WWII. Australia is often considered ‘behind the times’ when it comes to 20th century fashion, with silver mesh bags only becoming popular in the 1960s, with the creation of Australian Glomesh bags. It then reached its height in the 1970s, right as silver mesh bags lost popularity in the U.S. and Europe. Annette’s bag here suggests a different story. One where certain classes of Australians are more in tune with Western fashion then originally thought. One wonders how much effort Annette put into keeping ‘current’ while living so far away. This evening bag is a popular style of the 1960s. The Australian brand 'Oroton' was established in 1938 and is still in production today. This bags owner Mrs Edna Parker is a Wandin local with connections back to the original Rouget family of the Wandin Area. This is a suitcase known as a Gladstone bag. It is named after William Gladstone (1809-1898), a four-time Prime Minister of England. Gladstone bags were first produced by Edward Cole in London in 1854. This item has no particular local provenance but bags such as this one were commonly used, mainly by men, for business and sporting purposes. As it was compact and stored quite a lot of material in its deep interior, it was a popular choice for men travelling by public transport to the workplace or to sporting events. This Gladstone bag is retained for display purposes as an example of a mid 20th century suitcase.This is a small suitcase, called a Gladstone bag, made of stiffened brown leather built over a rigid metal frame. It has a leather handle on top of the metal frame and a metal lock on the side of the frame. There are metal clips to enclose the ends of the frame. There are metal straps attached to the sides of the case. Inside, the bag is lined with light brown cloth and there are two pockets on one side. The main body would form a type of "A" frame style. The right side has strong US pattern press clips to keep it shut. It has a mattress (probably Kapok) which is clipped in and is formed of 14 cotton covered cells. The bottom of each cell has a black waterproof material. This church collection bag is quite unique in that it has three grip handles, not the usual two. Why three. It may represent the holy trinity of, the father,the son and the holy spirit. Historically this might be used to reinforce the holy trinity belief which at the time of this item's construction was under threat. The threat came from splinter Christian sects such as the Church Of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints which have a Godhead of a council of three deities and there are other christian religions of only one deity covering the father,the son and the holy spirit.This collection bag for offerings, was the main method available towards the upkeep of the church and its parish during this era. Broadcasting of religious services was not as prolific as in the late 1900s and into the 2000s. It was a time when visualisation of the support of religion(especially in rural ares) was an important social factor. The God "fearing" beliefs within society of this period, provided the strong moral fabric which permitted settlements that did not have a strong law enforcement section to prosper and develop without fear or "favour". The collection bag was, and is still, a physical endorsement of support towards the church and what it stands for. This was a time when it was a social requirement to be seen in the church building and supporting fellow parishioners. The ingrained Australian psyche of supporting anyone that needed help, was a result of this period.Church collection/donation bag. Used by Richard Levy during occupation of Germany Post WW2. Flying Officer Levy joined the RAAF on 10/10/1942. RAAF No. 428329. Discharged on 3/1/1946. Last posting was 180 Sqn RAAF.1. "X" shape frame for use as a stretcher. (4 x 'X' frames). Made from steel and timber. 2. Canvas section (top) to complete the assembly. The canvas has timber dowel edges with matching steel tube joiners. Along those dowels there are 4 steel loops on each side. These lug over metal tips on the x frame legs. On the canvas section there is a canvas pocket section which can be held shut with cords or lugs (pillow). 3. Sleeping bag made from canvas. The floor section has a woollen layer. All the canvas is a brown colour. The sleeping bag has a lot written on it.Painted on the outside of sleeping bag: "AUS 42839 R.N. LEVY, RAAF BENDIGO, VICTORIA. (1) A18/Q". This was used by Snowy River Dry Cleaners. Snowy River Dry Cleaners was situated in Stanley Street, Orbost (previously a hat factory). There was also a shop in the CBD of Orbost. Basil Dowie moved his dry cleaning business from Nicholson Street to 31 Stanley Street where Stuart Hats had been. He had originally bought the business from Laurie Harrington in August 1950. A Gladstone bag is a small portmanteau suitcase built over a rigid frame which could separate into two equal sections. Unlike a suitcase, a Gladstone bag is deeper in proportion to its length.They are typically made of stiff leather and often belted with lanyards. The bags are named after William Ewart Gladstone (1809–1898), the four-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. This one has been adapted to suit the needs of a bookmaker. The leather neck strap has been added. Horse racing was a popular past-time in early Orbost. The Nixon family was involved through Keith Nixon. Some of the earliest horse races were held on a course in a paddock belonging to Mr James Cowell at Jarrahmond. For a long time horse races were part of the Marlo Picnic Races.This item is connected to an activity once popular in the Orbost district. A very worn leather bookmaker's bag. It is a Gladstone style bag with a leather neck strap. It has a spring lock with a key hole. It has a curved handle at the top. The leather neck strap does not appear to be original. Probably used in the local bean growing industry. The Orbost area was once a large bean growing area as the fertile snowy River flats produced good quality beans. It was exported to other states of Australia. Green beans were sent to Melbourne by train and later to Sydney, either via Bombala where they were railed, or to Eden to continue the journey on fish trucks. This bag was used by Keith Charles Nixon who was born in Orbost on May 17 1907, the son of Percival Charles Nixon, Keith farmed at Bellagoogan and Jarrahmond. He was a keen racegoer, racing the successful Bravesia, trained by P.B. Quinlan and winner of the William Reid Stakes and other races. He died on 22 June 1994. (ref.
