Purchased in Austria in 1937 by donor's father as a present for his wife. The vendors stated only two bags were made like this. Clothing. Navy blue velvet, on a brass frame, with a 34 cm long brass chain. A ''push-button'' 1.2 cm diameter, fastens the bag. A decorative, oval brass loop is attached to the centre of the frame. The velvet fabric is tightly gathered onto the frame. One side panel of the bag is exquisitely embroidered in a ''corded'' floral design, in pink, blue and greens. The bag is lined with a smokey blue watermark silk, with a flat pocket on one side. This bag was used in the 1950s by Mrs Annette Lord, and was part of a large collection she donated when helping found Mont de Lancey Historic Homestead. Annette and her husband were large travellers and often bought their clothes and accessories while overseas. This silver mesh bag closely matches other 1950s Whiting and Davis bags - a U.S. company who became incredibly fashionable in America and Europe after WWII. Australia is often considered ‘behind the times’ when it comes to 20th century fashion, with silver mesh bags only becoming popular in the 1960s, with the creation of Australian Glomesh bags. It then reached its height in the 1970s, right as silver mesh bags lost popularity in the U.S. and Europe. Annette’s bag here suggests a different story. One where certain classes of Australians are more in tune with Western fashion then originally thought. One wonders how much effort Annette put into keeping ‘current’ while living so far away. This evening bag is a popular style of the 1960s. The Australian brand 'Oroton' was established in 1938 and is still in production today. This bags owner Mrs Edna Parker is a Wandin local with connections back to the original Rouget family of the Wandin Area. The leather bag is a Railway Cash Bag. It was used to transfer cash between the the railway stations of Merino and Casterton. The Casterton Railway Station was Merino's banking station. This Cash Bag is an example of the connection between people in the remote areas of Victoria. This hand trolley was originally marked M.S.S. Co., and likely to have once belonged to the Melbourne Steamship Company, often referred to by those initials. Flagstaff Hill’s collection has several other objects connected to the M.S.S. Co. The firm was established in 1873 under the name Hugh R. Reid and Company, renamed Melbourne Steamship Company Ltd in 1895, and became Melbourne’s foremost interstate shipping line. Warrnambool was one of the ports of call at least between 1922 and 1956; for example, on September 27 1934, the ship Coolana left Warrnambool on its way to Stanley, Burnie and Devonport, then on to Sydney and Newcastle, while other of its vessels were visiting Fremantle, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Adelaide, and Melbourne. The firm remained in business until around 1960. A hand trolley can be loaded with heavy and bulky objects such as luggage, and stacks of boxes such as produce, cargo and equipment. It uses the principles of wheels and leverage, like a wheelbarrow, and can easily be wheeled from one place to another. Hand trolleys are still used by farmers, railway workers, shipping companies, porters, airports, hospitals, warehouses, logistical firms, furniture removalists, factory labourers and even in private homes when heavy loads need to be moved. Hand trolleys were first used in the 18th century in industries where children were used to move heavy loads. By using a hand trolley, the young labourers could move the piles of objects with the same efficiency as the adult workers. This hand trolley is significant for its likely connection to the Melbourne Steamship Company, or MSSCo, Melbourne’s foremost shipping line for interstate trade in the late nineteenth and early-to- mid twentieth century, representing many aspects of early trade within maritime Australia; Warrnambool was one of the ports visited by the company’s ships. The design of the hand trolley is an example of equipment used since the 18th century to move heavy loads at docks and shipyards. It is associated with the maritime industries of shipping, transportation, travel, and trade, as well as the colonial primary production sectors of farming, markets, and produce. The design represents an early step in the evolution of the simple hand trolley. More recently, as well as the continued use of this simple style of trolley, the design has been improved to include specialised trolleys that fold, climb stairs, move pianos and even easily turn corners on their spinning, pivoting wheels. Hand trolley: an L-shaped handcart with handles and supporting legs at one end, wheels at the other, and a ledge or platform to hold the load. This hand trolley has orange wooden slats and handles, two metal wheels, and a black metal frame with semi-circular side flanges. Badges from the Harbour Lights Guild were found in a bag in the archives. 20 of them were framed as memorabilia to give to women of substance of the Mission as a token of appreciation. The number 2 was given to Linda Dessau, Governor of Victoria, in 2017. The P.S. Curlip was built by Samuel Richardson & Sons at a Tabbara sawmill in 1889. Alan Richardson, shown in the photograph, was the captain. It was operated along the Snowy River in Australia's Gippsland region between 1890 and 1919, before being washed out to sea, and broken on Marlo beach, by a flash flood in 1919. James Winchester was born in Geelong in 1856. He first sailed into Marlo, aged 15 and returned in the 1870's. he worked on the snagging punt on the Snowy River and also on the Paddle Steamer Curlip which towed the barges to collect the maize grown along the Snowy River. Wooden chutes were constructed along the river banks to load bagged maize onto the barges. The bags of maize were sent down the chutes into the waiting barges. This is a pictorial record of the iconic Paddle Steamer Curlip which has a significant association with Orbost. A Gladstone bag is a small portmanteau suitcase built over a rigid frame which could separate into two equal sections. Unlike a suitcase, a Gladstone bag is deeper in proportion to its length.They are typically made of stiff leather and often belted with lanyards. The bags are named after William Ewart Gladstone (1809–1898), the four-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. This one has been adapted to suit the needs of a bookmaker. The leather neck strap has been added. Horse racing was a popular past-time in early Orbost. The Nixon family was involved through Keith Nixon. Some of the earliest horse races were held on a course in a paddock belonging to Mr James Cowell at Jarrahmond. For a long time horse races were part of the Marlo Picnic Races.This item is connected to an activity once popular in the Orbost district. A very worn leather bookmaker's bag. It is a Gladstone style bag with a leather neck strap. It has a spring lock with a key hole. It has a curved handle at the top. The leather neck strap does not appear to be original. This landing net is a small, bag-shaped net with a long handle at the mouth, for scooping a hooked fish out of the water and bringing it to shore or into a boat. this one is home-made by an Orbost angler.This fishing net is an example of a home-made piece of equipment. Probably used in the local bean growing industry. The Orbost area was once a large bean growing area as the fertile snowy River flats produced good quality beans. It was exported to other states of Australia. Green beans were sent to Melbourne by train and later to Sydney, either via Bombala where they were railed, or to Eden to continue the journey on fish trucks. One pound per bag was considered a good price in the early 1920's and pickers were paid one shilling and sixpence. (Ref: Newmerella Valley of Plenty)A round wooden framed sieve. This bag was used by Keith Charles Nixon who was born in Orbost on May 17 1907, the son of Percival Charles Nixon, Keith farmed at Bellagoogan and Jarrahmond. He was a keen racegoer, racing the successful Bravesia, trained by P.B. Quinlan and winner of the William Reid Stakes and other races. He died on 22 June 1994. (ref. This was used by Snowy River Dry Cleaners. Snowy River Dry Cleaners was situated in Stanley Street, Orbost (previously a hat factory). There was also a shop in the CBD of Orbost. Basil Dowie moved his dry cleaning business from Nicholson Street to 31 Stanley Street where Stuart Hats had been. He had originally bought the business from Laurie Harrington in August 1950.
