They sailed to Australia in 1855 aboard the SS Omega. At first they rented and then purchased land on Jasper Road East Brighton ( now McKinnon / Ormond) that was part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841. An early settlers’ Cottage on the site became their home and they farmed the land while raising 13 children. The Cottage was extended as required. In 1984 that early settler cottage was found in a dilapidated state by Laurie Lewis, in his Timber Yard in Jasper Rd Ormond.. The Moorabbin City Council, Federal Government, Mr Lewis and CMHS members reconstructed the Cottage in 1985 . Box Cottage Museum, a reconstruction of an early settler hut, is named after the Box family who resided there 1865 -1913 . William Box who with his wife Elizabeth and 13 children lived and farmed on the block of land in Jasper Road, East Brighton ( now McKinnon / Ormond) that was part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841 Inscribed in Album : “ The early photos in this album were found by Mr (Laurie) Lewis when he was demolishing the Old Box Cottage. He gave them to Mrs Avis Box Eldridge who in turn gave them to me. They were not identified. I believe they rightly belong in the Cottage. Smith) about the property. The first part of the document describes the materials and techniques utilized during the property’s original construction around 1850 and during subsequent renovations, whilst the second part describes the reconstruction of the property at a nearby site by the City of Moorabbin Historical Society. 2. A printout of a page from the website of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society (authored by Yun Ma, last modified on 13/01/2013, and accessed 30/06/2014), about the property’s present usage as a museum. Possibly used for beading work as well.Paisley patterned small sewing box with 6 compartments. On top tray and area below for flat objects - two pairs embroidery scissors; three bone threaders; one small cable needle; one brass safety pin; two retracting crochet hooks; seven metal crochet hooks (very fine); three bone crochet hooks with metal end (2 hooks, 1 pointed); and one metal pointer with bone end.; The top tray contains three thimbles (2 plastic, one metal); a tape measure and a book of needles (very fine). +Additional Keywords: Maggs -

... of the Box family early settlers... of the Box family early settlers Photograph, Black & White ...Ada Pearling Pickering ( G Box ) Stephen Charman, 1821-1906 a market gardener, donated land for the first Methodist Chapel, Cemetery and School in Charman Rd Cheltenham 1855. The enrolment was 36 pupils with Mr Frederick Meeres as Teacher. 1863 the school is called Beaumaris Common School No 84 with 70 pupils and Walter Meeres as Teacher. 1869 another 2 acres in Charman Road were granted by the Education Board and brick building built . 1872 State School 84 Beaumaris was increasing enrollments and 1878 a new brick school was built to accommodate 174 pupils and the name changed to Cheltenham State School No.84 1894 Mentone State School No.2950 amalgamated with Cheltenham SS No.84. 1910 the buildings were in disrepair, overcrowding was increasing and renovations were made 1912 with further additions in 1925 and 1937. Post WW11 extra prefabricated Classrooms were added as enrollment increased to 1038 in 1955.. Cheltenham East State School 4754 was opened as housing development spread over the City of Moorabbin . (J.Larson Sandringham HS) Ada Pearling Pickering was descendant of the George Box Family who migrated in 1850,s and established market gardens in the Brighton area of Dendy's Special Survey 1841 . 1855 Stephen Charman donated land to the Methodist Church so that a School could be established to educate the children of the early settler market gardeners and farmers in the Cheltenham area . Education was valued by the general community and as well as schools they established mechanics Institutes and Libraries in Moorabbin Shire. This document was donated by a descendant of the Box family in 1985.William and Elizabeth Box purchased 'Box Cottage' in 1865 from a pioneer settler who had bought part of the land noted in Dendy's Special Survey 1841 Brighton. They raised their family there and established a market garden to supply produce to the population of Melbourne. Their nephew Alonzo married Mary Kloster/ Closter in 1918 and she brought with her the 'Melber' sewing machine that she used to provide clothing for the familyThe original paper Receipt of the Melber Company Sewing Machine, 154 Chapel Street Prahran on July 15th 1909. Many of the items are European-made, generally of British origin, however there are a number that were made for the Australian market by Australian manufacturers. In the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries, there were large numbers of games produced for children and adults. These included: arcade games, board games, playing cards and puzzles. A representative sample, many now rare survivors, can be found in the collection.Card game called "Comic Families" housed in an original labelled box. The box is purple, orange and white in colour with pictures of family members on the front. It was built by Andreas Hansen in 1888. It was purchased by Dr John Box in 1913 and was demolished in the 1950s to make way for Sythney Court. The property was surrounded by extensive grounds and abutted Surrey Gardens. Sythney Court was so named to commemorate the Box family's association with a Cornish village of the same name.A black & white photo of double-storey Victorian mansion.
