Buninyong owes its existence to the Learmonth brothers and surrounding stations. Timber for fencing and building was followed by a number of industries including the discovery of the famous Ballarat goldfields. Former Presbyterian church built in 1860, with foundation stone laid by Mrs Scott, snr, the oldest resident in the district on Tuesday 27th March 1860. Before the end of August 1851 the government had decided to charge a large licence fee for the right to search for gold. When news of that decision reached the Buninyong diggings, the first protest on the Victorian goldfields was held.
