This chair is one piece of the parlour or lounge suite in the front room at Hymettus Cottage, Ballarat. The suite consist of this grandfather chair, a grandmother or nursing chair and four balloon back chairs all in Australian cedar. This hand carved President’s Chair was presented by Legatees from the Melbourne Club and groups in 1955. It was made in memory of the Founder of Legacy, Legatee Stan Savige who had passed away in May 1954. This photo is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. It is an image of the first Chair Lift built in Australia by Bob Hymans. This was a single chair lift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. One of four carvers' chairs supplied by Old Collegians Association in 1925 for the newly erected Memorial Hall. In the 1970s these chairs were in use at the end of each table in MacFarland Dining Hall. Student chairs were similar shape but without crest or arms. These two chairs are Grant Featherston prototypes of the 1947 Relaxation Chairs. These chairs came from the Boyd family's Camberwell home (666 Riversdale Road, Camberwell, formerly 158 Riversdale Road) and were originally upholstered with webbing. These oak and rattan arm chairs were previously used in the old Warrnambool Museum and Art Gallery, opened on 29th July 1886 with Mr Joseph Archibald as Curator, demolished in 1960. Chairs are significant to local history as they were originally purchased for use in the Warrnambool Museum and Art Gallery. Padded leather seat studded at edge, over rattan cane seat. Rattan cane is stitched onto wooden frame through drilled holes.
