Fairfield Hospital opened in 1904 as the Queen's Memorial Infectious Diseases Hospital, the first purpose-built isolation hospital for infectious diseases in Victoria. Its 22-acre site was located on a bank of the Yarra River. It was renamed Fairfield Hospital in 1948. In its later years, the hospital was a centre for AIDS treatment in Victoria, and a passionate campaign fought against its planned closure in the 1990s. Fairfield Hospital finally closed in June 1996. One section of the site was gazetted as a Public Park and Memorial Garden (containing an AIDS Garden).Circular white and red plastic badge. The Trust conducted a trial run using tram No. 1 one week before the Trust was taken over by the MMTB. The Shire of Diamond Valley was formerly the north ward of the City of Heidelberg. In 1960 following inequitable rate increases, it was proposed that the 'north ward' sever itself from Heidelberg and form its own municipality. The Shire was abolished in 1994 and areas redistributed to Banyule, Nillumbik and Darebin councils.This newspaper reports on the history and politics of the new Shire of Diamond Valley. The History of the Formation of the Shire of Whittlesea chronicles the establishment of the Darebin, Epping, Morang, Merriang and Whittlesea road districts and shires, and their eventual formation into the Shire of Whittlesea. It also includes stories about early pioneers, local institutions, buildings and a brief account of the development of local government in Victoria. The history was compiled at the direction of the Shire of Whittlesea in 1961, by Mr. S.T.Grey.
