David Syme (1827-1908) was a newspaper proprietor who was born on 2 October 1827 at North Berwick, Scotland. Early in 1851, he went via Cape Horn to California seeking gold. By mid-1852 he was in Melbourne, and in the next three years prospected with some success on Ballarat, Bendigo, Castlemaine and Beechworth diggings. In 1855 he lost a possible fortune at Egerton near Ballarat when a promising claim was jumped. Ebenezer Syme bought the insolvent Melbourne Age for £2000, and invited David Syme to take up a share. In September 1856 Syme put up some cash and his contracting business to obtain a half-share. He helped to manage the paper but returned to contracting late in 1857. When Ebenezer retired in 1859 Syme reluctantly returned to the business, and on Ebenezer's death next year he began his fifty-year career as publisher and editor of the Age. (C. E. A description in the newspaper near the illustration (page 210) reads as follows: "Eltham is a pretty little township on the Yarra Flats road, about 14 miles east north east of Melbourne, from which place there is communication by way of Heidelberg. It has a population of nearly 400 inhabitants, but in addition it is the centre of a large district extending over about 203 square miles, having a population of 2344. The land in the district is mostly used for grazing purposes, although as a rule the small farms grow a good deal of wheat, oats and other agricultural produce. A large quantity of fruit, especially raspberries and strawberries, is also produced, the rich alluvial flats along the creek upon which the township is situated being very well adapted for that purpose. Gold has also been found in the vicinity of the township, but not in remunerative quantities". This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Built by John Bournane, Rockingham had a number of occupants before the newspaper magnate David Syme purchased it in 1902. The house in the 1860s and ‘70s was comprised of nine rooms, and was surrounded by a veranda on the front and sides. It was approached from the Kew road by the curve in front of the Hon. S.G. Henty’s mansion of ‘Findon’.In 1955, the Syme family sold Rockingham to the Red Cross Society to be used as a convalescent home for returned servicemen. The house was sold, demolished, and the land subdivided in 1966.An early panoramic photograph of an early Kew mansion (now demolished), dating from the 1870s.A rare, panoramic photograph (c.1870) of the garden of ‘Rockingham’, during the occupation of the house by W. Gardiner Esq. Rockingham was located beside and above the Barkers Road cutting. The view of the garden in the photograph is of the terraces leading down to the Yarra River.
