Location-wise, given the proximity to the railway it was likely taken from Belgrave-Gembrook Road to the west of Emerald, looking towards the town, though it is unclear exactly where this could have happened. This could also be taken from one of the curves in then railway to the east of Emerald, though the roads it could be taken from were historically limited.This photograph shows an earlier view of Emerald and its surroundings, mostly lacking the development that has effected the land over the past centuries.This item is a modern copy of an older black and white photograph. It is relatively blurry and pixelated, indicating it may have been expanded from a smaller photograph. It depicts an unpaved road; the photographer is standing to the right of the road, looking down it as it approaches from behind the photographer, appears in the bottom-left, ascends a hill and disappears into the top-right of the photograph. Past the road is a landscape mostly of shrubs, bushes, and sparse trees, interrupted by an unclear train with several carriages following the line left, steam emitting from its chimney.. It looks past the Emerald Coffee Palace, a significant establishment serving coffee, wine, and more - a room in the back was even used as a visiting doctor's surgery. ...Bottom-right: "STATION RD. EMERALD" Building in the photograph: "EMERALD COFFEE PALACE"...Kilvington Drive, Emerald, Victoria, Australia...Emerald Coffee Palace Emerald 1900s Commerce Bottom-right: "STATION RD. ...There are seven other copies of this photograph in our collection, mostly differing in the placement of the label and the cropping of the photograph. This is itself a copy of the original. One of these copies is also accessioned as VEMUP0456.2. This c. 1907 photograph was taken from the intersection of Beaconsfield Road (now Kilvington Drive) and Station Road (now Puffing Billy Place), looking towards Emerald Railway Station. It looks past the Emerald Coffee Palace, a significant establishment serving coffee, wine, and more - a room in the back was even used as a visiting doctor's surgery. The Coffee Palace was, at the time, owned by the O'Connor family and run by Mrs Greatorex. At this time it was relatively new - the second centre of Emerald, around Kilvington Drive, mostly materialised thanks to the location of the railway station. The location of the railway is visible, but from this angle the station and tracks are not visible. Note the posts in front of the Palace - used to tie horses in this time before cars became dominant. There are elevated wires visible running along the left side of the street, which resemble power lines but at this time are more likely to have instead been telegraph cables. This copy was framed in the donor's home after being gifted to him by its previous owner, who bought it from an op-shop in Melbourne.This photograph recounts the growth of Emerald's second town centre around the railway station.This item is a large, slightly yellowed, black and white copy of an older photograph. It depicts an unpaved street leading down a hill to a gate and fence, with several shops to either side. There is a lamp post on the street corner on the right, and a telegraph line running along the left side. In the background, the slope rises back up to a hill with fields and scattered trees.Bottom-right: "STATION RD. While it's possible this is a crowd gathered for the opening of the station, it is difficulty to prove either way and could also just be a crowd of passengers for the normal operation of the line.This image captures a vital element of Emerald's historical development - the railway.This item is a modern coy of an older black and white photograph. The photo captures a steam train entering a railway station from the left of the frame, greeted by a crowd of people standing on the station platform to the right. The train is partially obscured by a shed on the photographer's side of the tracks, likely with implements for train maintenance. If the butchery in the photograph - which was likely taken in the first decade of the twentieth century - is indeed Couper's, this photo is likely looking down Main Street from the intersection with Monbulk Road. These copies were made in 2006.This photograph captures an earlier phase of Emerald's development, not long after the opening of the first Butchery and long before the town had sealed roads.This item includes photographs a, b, and c. Behind the main structure is a smaller structure covering a machine with steam flowing out of its chimney - a mechanical component of the mill, making the work of processing timber easier. To the left of the image, several unprocessed logs sit on the ground, while to the right is a pile of processed, cut, timber. Several workers - may five - are in frame, all standing near or under the wooden structure. In the background, dense trees rise above the structure, rising high enough to leave the frame. Hans Knorr was an abstract sculptor who lived in Emerald until 1979. This Art Gallery was the first privately owned rural art gallery in Victoria. Hans became a pre-eminent sculptor of his generation, working in aluminium, bronze, steel, glass and wood. Much of his work was commissioned for churches and cathedrals in Australia and overseas. Pieces of his work can be found in every state of Australia, USA, Hong Kong, France, England and many other countries. This sketch of the gallery was done as part of the publicity of the launch of the book, 'The Hills of Home: A Bicentennial History of the Sherbrooke Shire', in 1988. As well as doing this particular sketch, Jillienne Winzenried's pen and ink drawings feature throughout this book. This postcard is believed to originate from c. 1900-10, but the image itself - of sluicing for gold on Menzies Creek - might be older. Gold mining in Emerald was most popular in the 1850s and 60s. However, gold mining on Menzies Creek reopened in the 1890s depression, which is a more likely source of this photograph.This postcard is significant for its relative uniqueness as a colourised depiction of Emerald's gold mining history.This postcard is separated into two pieces of paper (between the obverse and reverse). The reverse is a landscape message side with not message but some annotation and an accession number written to the left side, in a portrait orientation. The obverse is in a portrait orientation, with a printed caption in the bottom-right. The image is hand-coloured (colour artificially applied to a black-and-white base photograph) and depicts two men (one of whose head is cut off by damage to the photograph) working in an artificially reinforced channel in what appears to be a creek or stream. One stands in the water while the other is beside it. Brookdale Guest House was one of the first in Emerald, opening in 1901 between Charman and Brookdale Avenues as the railway opened the region for tourists. This postcard was created c. 1907, using the colourful view as advertising to draw more tourists to the region. The guesthouse remained open until 1920. V.S.M. (Victorian Stamp Market) produced a number of series of postcards in the early 1910s.This hand-coloured postcard is a rare colourful view of a major site of 1900s-10s Emerald.This postcard holds a hand-coloured photograph taken from the top of a hill, looking at a homestead with a series of buildings and fields. This is itself a copy of the original. One of these copies is also accessioned as VEMUP0456.2. This c. 1907 photograph was taken from the intersection of Beaconsfield Road (now Kilvington Drive) and Station Road (now Puffing Billy Place), looking towards Emerald Railway Station. It looks past the Emerald Coffee Palace, a significant establishment serving coffee, wine, and more - a room in the back was even used as a visiting doctor's surgery. The Coffee Palace was, at the time, owned by the O'Connor family and run by Mrs Greatorex. At this time it was relatively new - the second centre of Emerald, around Kilvington Drive, mostly materialised thanks to the location of the railway station. The location of the railway is visible, but from this angle the station and tracks are not visible. While the annotation lists that the photograph was taken in 1889, the visibility of a gate (contra the annotation) and existence of this second town centre - which grew around the station - suggests that other sources lisitng 1907 are closer to accuracy. Note the posts in front of the Palace - used to tie horses in this time before cars became dominant. There are elevated wires visible running along the left side of the street, which resemble power lines but at this time are more likely to have instead been telegraph cables.This photograph recounts the growth of Emerald's second town centre around the railway station.This item is a black and white copy of an older photograph. It depicts an unpaved street leading down a hill to a gate and fence, with several shops to either side. There is a lamp post on the street corner on the right, and a telegraph line running along the left side. In the background, the slope rises back up to a hill with fields and scattered trees.Bottom-right: "STATION RD.
