A ring box used by a Warrnambool Jeweller in the mid 20th century This ring box was used by the Warrnambool business of F J Gill & Co which operated in Liebig Street in the period 1920-1960. Frederick James Gill (1881-1961) was a consulting optician in 1919 and operated a business in Liebig Street. In the 1950's the jewellery business also operated in Terang and Camperdown. Cream hinged bakelite ring box with velvet cushions to hold a ring. The satin material inside the lid has a small brown sticker. Hung in the public bar of the Rose and Crown Hotel in Bay Street soon after the 2nd World War until major renovations were carried out in aprrox 1986/7. It was then returned or donated to the Port Melbourne Sub-Branch of the RSL, but due to diminishing membership they soon donated it to the PMCC for safe keeping or display. The Volunteers Air Observers was formed in 1941 with the aim of observing aircraft flying over Australia. There were over 24000 civilians volunteering their services and as the military threat to Australia subsided they took on roles as coast and weather watching. R. F. Kennedy operated as a pharmacy in the late 19th and early 20th century in Timor Street Warrnambool. Mr Kennedy manufactured a large number of drugs and perfumes on a wholesale basis as well as very impressive retail business. Around the mid 1880’s they were shipping 5000 dozen bottles of Janos salts annually. Boracic acid was one such product which was commonly used product as an insecticide, herbicide and in cleaning products.A common item which was manufactured by one of the largest manufacturing chemists of the area. These two bottles have been used in the business of Melsom Hemmons a dentist who operated from the chemist shop of R.F. Kennedy & Co. in Timor Street, Warrnambool. Hemmons was a close friend of Richard Kennedy who established a large wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist business in Warrnambool in the 1880s. This business was regarded as the largest and best appointed pharmacy in Victoria for many years. The business continued until the 1920s trading as R..F. Kennedy & Co. These two bottles are of considerable interest as mementoes of two prominent Warrnambool identities of the past- Melsom Hemmons and Richard Kennedy..1 A brown glass bottle with a metal top and a white label with faded red writing pasted on. This dish would have been used in the home either as a dish for some sort of food (perhaps jam) or in the bedroom as a container for small items such as hair clips or pins or even as a powder bowl. It is an attractive item and has been bought for its ornamental qualities. This item has no known local provenance but is retained for display as an attractive and high-quality item in use in households in the past. This is a pink china dish or bowl with a lid. The bowl is round with a black edging around the rim. There is a small crack on the side. The lid is circular with a raised top and a black line around the rim and a wide circular band of patterning of flowers, leaves and scrolls around the outer edge. The pink handle has a black edging. The Rosebrook Cheese and Butter Factory was opened in November 1888 by Messrs Lydiard &T F Rutledge & was a cooperative factory managed by Mr. Goldie. It operated out of the former Rosebrook Flour Mill which was built on the banks of the Moyne River near the Rosebrook bridge in the late 1840s. In 1896 the factory commenced the production of the condensation of milk. The company closed in 1911. The building and machinery were sold in 1917. Rosebrook is situated about 20 kilometres from Warrnambool on the Princes Highway. This label is of some local significance as the Rosebrook Cheese and Butter factory operated for 30 years Rectangular dark blue and white label featuring text and a trade mark. The latter is circular with three cows pictured. There are decorations of flowers and leaves. The central area of the label is white with three lines. These medals were produced for Anzac Day 1918 by the Education Department of Victoria and made by the Melbourne firm, Stokes and Son. They were issued to Victorian school children and also sold to aid the war effort. These medals have no particular local provenance but are retained for display purposes..1 A silver-coloured metal medal with an image of an A.I F. soldier and printed words on the obverse side and a banner and decorative leaves and printed words on the reverse side. Doctor Horace Iles Holmes was born at Launceston Tasmania 09/08/1877. He was educated at Launceston High School and Tasmanian University and later at Melbourne University. After graduation he came to Warrnambool in 1905 and worked in the practice of Dr T F Fleetwood and took over the practice shortly afterwards along with the position of Honorary medical officer at Warrnambool Hospital and also health officer until 1944 and as an Honorary consulting medical officer from then until 1958. His practice which was located at " Ierne" opposite the Presbyterian Church in Spence St Warrnambool. He later moved to a new home and surgery at the corner of Spence Liebig st and Raglan parade which was later sold to Dr C B Berryman. A large medical clinic still operates from this site. Dr Holmes was a keen fisherman and a member of Rotary serving as district governor.This plate is a connection to a long standing doctor in the Warrnambool district. In his practice he would have treated many district people and as such this item has strong social and historical connections to the district.
