Menin Gate at Midnight (also known as Ghosts of Menin Gate) is a 1927 painting by Australian artist Will Longstaff. The painting depicts a host of ghostly soldiers marching across a field in front of the Menin Gate war memorial. Longstaff painted the work after attending the unveiling of the Menin Gate memorial, at Ypres in Belgium, on 24 July 1927. The memorial commemorated those men of the British Empire, including Australia, who died in the battles of the First World War around the town. The painting is part of the collection of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. It was purchased by Lord Woolavington for 2,000 Guineas and presented to the Australian government.[1] After a royal command viewing for George V and the Royal family at Buckingham Palace, the painting was displayed in Manchester and Glasgow. It was then taken around Australia, where record crowds paid to view the work. Will Longstaff painted the original oil on canvas in Greater London -United Kingdom in 1927. The Menin Gate commemorates soldiers with no marked graves killed on the Western Front during the 1st World War. The gate shown in the photograph is located on the same wall as the large double main gate of the former Ballarat Gaol. Next to the gate is a watchtower with guard walk on top of the brick wall. This corner location provided the guards with a clear view into the gaol grounds and the street outside. Most of the gaol was demolished to allow for the School of Mines to expand. This watchtower remains along with the main gate, Warden's Quarters and the Governor's residence. Alice Blanch Chehovski was born in Queensland to a Russian mother and Polish father. When her father died leaving three small children to bring up on her own, her took them back to Russia to visit her own parents. In the following fateful year, Stalin came into power and the family was trapped by Russia closing its borders. At the age of twenty three, 1944, Alice entered Moscow's Institute of Decorative Arts and Applied Arts to study ceramics. Neither the subject of ceramics nor the academic drawing in fine pencil inspired her. At that time Moscow was surrounded by German troops, Russian culture was inhibited by the war and generally speaking it was not the time for arts. Alice said 'My soul and my hands were needed as a volunteer, to help the wounded soldiers survive'. In 1866, in an effort to maintain the main roads of the region it was decided to establish toll roads on the Belfast, Woodford, Purnim and Allansford roads. Gates were erected and the leases were disposed of by auction. In 1867 the Woodford tollhouse was destroyed by fire suspected to be deliberate. The tolls were removed three years later after much opposition.This item has historic significant as in the early years(1864) of Warrnambool Tolls were levied on the three main roads leading from Warrnambool into the Shire.
