Mr John Watt set up farming in 1879. He was a native of Port Fairy. This item is part of the Mary Gilbert Collection. Noorinbee School, situated on the Bombala Rd approximately 6.5 km north of Cann River, was opened on 26th of July 1900, with Albert Le Page as head teacher until 30th of September 1904. The school no longer functions. A school bus would daily to take the older children to the central classes at Cann River. "Noorinbee" is an Aboriginal word of unknown origin, The historical school is still at the front of the school yard. The Old Noorinbee School was been shifted twice. The first time they used a bullock team in 1924. The second time they used trucks and tractors in 1991. It was the first public building for the Cann Valleyand was first used as a hall and a church until it became the Noorinbee school in 1900. It was built in 1898.This item is associated with education in East Gippsland. Marion Anne McKellar, the daughter of William Gilbert McKellar and Maria Jones was born in 1838. She married Henry Henty in 1859 and they had 9 children. She died in June 1919. Henry Henty and his wife Marion had ‘Tarring’, Kew built for their family in 1872. The Henty family resided at ‘Tarring’ until the death of Marion Henty in 1919. ‘Tarring’ was then sold to Ruyton Girls’ School, and the School moved to the site, (now 12 Selbourne Rd, Kew) in 1920. ‘Tarring’ was renamed ‘Henty House’ in honour of its original owners. Redbyrne Potteries was established in 1975 and was located at 225 Old Dookie Rd, Shepparton, Victoria. It was originally a pear orchard, and Robert Waterson used a tree form in the stamp from early 1976. Soon after Redbyrne Potteries was established Robert Waterson resigned from teaching, enlarged the premises and added kilns and clay making machines. Potters were employed to make functional stoneware to his design, and it became the largest producer of hand-thrown pottery in Victoria. Redbyrne potters included Gilbert Buchanan, Chris Cheer, Graeme Day, Mark Lepp, Steven Elliott, Robert Henderson, Cathy Thompson, Noel Townsend and Craig Willis. Items are impressed 'Redbyrne Potteries Shepparton' and the mark may also include the individual thrower's name.
