Tolls were used on the Great Ocean Road from 192 until 19. . Toll gates were at Eastern View and Lorne. Money collected was used to help pay for the construction and maintenance of the road.The Great Ocean Road was built largely by returned serviceman from the First World . The road was built to link the coastal towns, provide better access, to foster tourism and employ the returned servicemen. Fewer private vehicles travelled the road then, most tourists came on coaches and buses. Tourists stayed in guesthouses and hotels. The Great Ocean Road may be the only road in the world which was built as a war memorial. In 1916, much of Australia was poorly served by roads, and it was suggested that returning servicemen could be given worthwhile employment by building roads in isolated areas. The plan was taken up for the Great Ocean Road, and work was dedicated to the memory of men who had fallen in World War 1. The road itself is a great feat of engineering. It wind around some of Australia's most rugged coastline. Jack Kenneth Loney (21 October 1925 – 13 February 1995) was an amateur Australian marine historian who published over one hundred books and numerous newspaper and magazine articles. He was a schoolteacher and principal until his retirement. London Bridge, pre 1990 was a double-spanning bridge connected to the mainland. The stack was created over hundreds of years, with the weaker layers toward the base being eroded away by wind and water to form the two bridges. The span closer to the shoreline collapsed unexpectedly on 15 January 1990, leaving two visitors, whilst uninjured, stranded on the outer span before being rescued by helicopter.
