Typed letter to R. J. Bartle, Esq., from D. O'Connor, Engineer and ?, Chief Engineer, of the National Roads and Motorists Association (N.S.W.) dated November 8, 1936. Letter mentions four tests done in a car over a stretch of ground to measure fuel consumption. Tests were done with and without the device installed in the fuel system. Taken on an unknown date, depicted is a portrait of a young, unidentified male soldier. He is dressed in an Australian military uniform. It is believed that this soldier was part of The Australian Imperial Force during World War I. This can be inferred by the chevron rank insignia visible on the uniform. The placement of this insignia on the sleeve of the right arm suggests that this soldier was either a Warrant Officer or a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). Specifically, the number of chevron stripes - here, there are three - are believed to signify a Sergeant ranking. The man in this photograph is also wearing a 'Rising Sun' collar badge on his coat. Australia, unlike most other Commonwealth countries, did not adopt metal regimental badges during the First World War. All units were issued with the Australian Army General Service Badge, better known as the 'Rising Sun’ badge. This insignia is almost always identified with the Australian Imperial Force.The record is historically significant due to its connection to World War I. This conflict is integral to Australian culture as it was the single greatest loss of life and the greatest repatriation of casualties in the country's history. Australia’s involvement in the First World War began when the Australian government established the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in August 1914. Immediately, men were recruited to serve the British Empire in the Middle East and on the Western Front. The first significant Australian action of the war was the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force’s (ANMEF) landing on Rabaul on 11 September 1914. The ANMEF took possession of German New Guinea at Toma on 17 September 1914 and of the neighbouring islands of the Bismarck Archipelago in October 1914. On 25 April 1915, members of the AIF landed on Gallipoli in Turkey with troops from New Zealand, Britain, and France. This specific event holds very strong significance within Australian history. The record has strong research potential. This is a photograph of the four daughters of Mrs George Thomas. L -R : Elleen Parsons, Julia Eaton, Eva Murray and Violet Gay. George Thomas and Gtranny Thomas lived at Newmerella on Grand View Road until the 1950's. In the Newmerella Koorie Community, there were about 15 families. The family was a very well-respected local Aboriginal family. . George was a stockman for Jas Stirling. From Colin Thomas "I learned that George Thomas was Kitty Johnson’s oldest son. As a young boy George had been found by the Reverend John Bulmer, in addition to other young Aboriginal children in the bush around the Lake Tyers area. He had gathered them all together and took them onto the reserve at the Mission. After quite a number of years had passed George had met and fallen in love with a young half-caste girl, known as Agnes Patterson. Agnes was of Monaro descent and came from New South Wales. George and Agnes got married at Lake Tyers. Because of the half-caste act George and Agnes had to leave the reserve along with their nine girls. They moved to Newmerella, situated outside the township of Orbost. This was the place that George and his wife and children came to call home. Soon after, George and Agnes would add to their family bringing the total of children to fourteen, the last five of whom were boys. At the time of the First World War George’s boy’s volunteered their services and joined the army. When in Europe one of the boys sustained an injury which caused the loss of an arm. Following the end of the war the boys came home, as men." The Thomas family was a well-respected family in Newmerell in the late 19th and first half of the 20th century. This letter has been written from France in 1917 by Private Edwin Johnson Carter to his friend Mrs Maggie Craig. It gives details of events in his life at the time – in the trenches in World War One. Private Edwin Johnson was a farmer from Nullawarre who enlisted in 1916 and served in France. He was drowned when the mail boat R.M.S. Leinster was torpedoed by a German submarine in the Irish Sea in October 1918. Private Johnson was returning from a visit to Ireland while on leave. This is an original letter from World War One It was written by a soldier from Nullawarre and has a particular poignancy as he writes: “My work brings me in contact with all that hurts in war. I am somewhat calm to it now but if I am spared to return I fear it shall be my nightmare.” He did not return but we have this letter to remind us of the horrors men such as Private Carter endured. This is an envelope containing a letter of two pages sent by a soldier on active service in France in World War One. Both the envelope and the letter are buff-coloured. The envelope has an image of an Australian Military Forces Y.M.C.A. logo, a Post Office stamp and a Censor stamp. The address is handwritten in pencil. The letter has an image of a Y.M.C.A. logo in red and black and the handwritten material is in pencil. Bogong Village, which was known as “The Junction”, is well recorded. The first tent camp was at the junction of Pretty Valley and Rocky Valley streams in the early 40’s. Further downstream were the sawmill, stables and blacksmith’s forge. Horses were the main mode of transport in the early days. The road to Bogong had reached the lookout spur just beyond Roper’s Spur track just before the 1939 fires. The early forties saw rapid growth of the village, with single and married men’s quarters, workshops, mess huts and administrative offices. The facilities necessary for communal living were quickly in place- a post office, police station, co-op store, medical centre, community hall/theatre, tennis courts and school. Much of the temporary accommodation that housed groups such as the Albion Quarrying Company were in the area now under water.This group of photographs are a pictorial record of the early history of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, the people who worked in the background supplying administrative support and the workers and their families. These photographs were taken at Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo on the 10th of October 1986. The two RASvy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. The scoreboard in the background in photo .11P indicated an emphatic victory for the Army Survey Regiment.This is a set of 13 photographs of Flag Day, Army Survey Regiment versus the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo on the 10th of October 1986. There are more photographs available on 35mm negatives and 35mm positive proofs. The photographs were printed on photographic paper and are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. This magazine was taken to Antarctica by Richard W. Richards, a member of Shackleton's expedition. Richards was a member of the Ross Sea Party. The item was returned to Dick Richards after L. Quartermain found it above Richards' bunk in Cape Evans in 1961 when a party were sent down by the New Zealand Government to clear the hut of ice. Richards later gave it to the donor because of the article on the swerve of cricket balls.This copy of Nature was used by Dick Richards when he was marooned at Cape Evans during the Shackleton Antarctic Expedition. The hut used by Richards and his party was also used by Captain Scott. The magazine dates before the use of the hut by Captain Scott so it may be assumed that it belonged to Scott or one of his party. In 1960, during ice being cleared from the hut, the magazine was found above Dick Richards' bunk and returned to him in 1961. It is therefore a remnant of the Shackleton Antarctic Expedition..1) A magazine called 'Nature', a weekly magazine of science, featuring beautiful advertisements and illustrations. .2) A note on a piece of cardboard written on by Dick Richards .3 An envelope addressed to Leslie B. Quartermain of the New Zealand antarctic Society, with the hand written note 'This copy of "Nature" was found embedded in ice in my bunk at C. Evans in Dec 1960..2) This copy of Nture was brought back from above my bunk in Cape Evans by L Quartermain in 1961. his party were sent down by NZ Govt to clear the hut of ice (250 tons removed) and restore to the condition when Scott and ourselves lived in it in 1911 - 12 and 1914 - 17. It contains an article by J.J. Johnson on swerve in cricket tennis and golf balls etc & settles an argument I often had re lat dip in of a ball [pist?]. John McNaughton was also president of the 1929 Ballarat Teachers' College Dramatic Club. The 1929 Ballarat Teachers' College Council comprised of Miss A. Ballinger, Mr R. Broben, John H. McNaughton, Mr R.P. Warriner and Miss Monahan.Crimson soft covered booklet of 50 pages relating to the Ballarat Teachers' College. It belonged to John McNaughton. The magazine includes the following images: Ballarat Teachers' College Staff and Students; women's tennis; football, men's tennis; hockey; Ballarat Teachers' College Council; visit of Bendigo Teachers' College. The Ballarat Teachers' College Football team included: C. Goltz (Captain), A.M. McPherson (Vice-captain), S.C. Hender, Rex Broben, N. Povey, F. Hickey, J. Heard, J. Johnson, J. Thomas, R. Watson, J.
