From TROVE: Chronicle (Adelaide, SA : 1895 - 1954), Thursday 1 April 1948, page 8 Legacy Conference In Adelaide Addressing delegates from all States at a convention of Intermediate Legacy Clubs last week, His Excellency the Governor (Sir Willoughby Norrie), who was accompanied by Lady Norrie, said that Adelaide regarded it as a privilege to be chosen as the venue of the first of what might become a series of annual conferences on the general policy of Intermediate Legacy of Australia. His Excellency stressed that the objects of Intermediate Legacy were to foster the spirit of comradeship, self-sacrifice and service, and to establish a high standard of citizenship and a spirit of responsibility in national development. 'Anything to do with Legacy has the strongest support of Lady Norrie and myself,' continued the Governor. 'Membership of Intermediate Legacy is open to the children of deceased servicemen who have passed the age of 16. There is no upper limit, although in 1945 a Senior Intermediate Club was formed in Adelaide for men returned from the services, or who, ineligible for service, had attained the age of 25. 'A record of an intermediate Legacy Conference in 1948. Kew achieved independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860. As a new municipality, its first three leaders were designated as chairmen. On becoming a borough in 1863, its leaders were identified as mayors. The earliest photographs date from ca.1906, when the Town of Kew commissioned the noted local photographer Josiah E Barnes to produce standardised portraits of former mayors to be displayed in the Mayoral Chamber of the Town Hall. The collection also includes photographs by other well-known photographic studios such as Burlington Studios, Melba – Melbourne, Stuart Tompkins, Spencer Shier and Talma & Co. The majority of mounts identify the photographer. Eighty photographs are housed in their original frames.This portrait is one of a series of mounted and framed photographic portraits of mayors and town clerks of the former Borough, Town and City of Kew. The portraits were transferred by the City of Kew to the Kew Historical Society in March 1989. A Significance Assessment in 2018, funded by the National Library of Australia confirmed the historic, and often artistic significance of the series.Framed portrait of Cr. Charles Leslie Mitton (1905-1968) was a pharmacist at 131 Union Road, Surrey Hills from 1933-1968. DOD 30/04/1968. Prior to coming to Surrey Hills, he was a pharmacist in Newmarket (Ref: 1931 electoral roll). He and his wife, Ethel Sylvia Elizabeth Mitton (nee Stevenson) lived at 65 Union Road. They were married in 1933 and had 2 sons and a daughter. He was followed in the business by his son John and daughter Rosalind. Two of the postcards are specifically addressed to a ‘Master Jack de Little’ at Caramut House, in the local township of Caramut which was a Pioneer Settlement and a Soldier Settlement area after World War I.
