This is a book providing information on the streets of Hamilton, Victoria and the origin of the names. Hamilton is a city in Western Victoria at the intersection of the Glenelg Highway and the Henty Highway. European settlement began with the arrival of pastoralists following the 1836 explorations of Major Thomas Mitchell. The Wedge family in 1839 had the property ‘The Grange’ which covered the site of Hamilton today. The town was gazetted in 1851 and named after a place in Scotland. Hamilton Victoria is the centre of a sheep-grazing and agricultural district. The book won an award in the 2008 Victorian Community History Awards. This book is of interest as it gives information on the Hamilton streets and the origin of their names. The history of Hamilton is of particular interest to those also living in the Western District. The book will be a useful research tool. This is a soft cover book of 174 pages. The back cover has a white background with black and white photographs of five local Hamilton people. The front cover has a yellow and brown background with black and white photographs of five local Hamilton people, an outline of a map of Victoria and a photograph of a map of the Hamilton area with some artefacts placed on the map. Paperback book with glossy front covernon-fictionArticle Page 45: McKay's 1891 Journey: A Window into the Victorian Mallee Back Country by John Burch In 1891, Nathaniel McKay, the father of Hugh Victor McKay, the inventor of the Sunshine Harvester, travelled south from Mildura across the Mallee back country to Yellumjip, south-west of Ouyen. He described his journey in the Mildura cultivator, and his articles provide a rare description of the back country, also opening a window into colonial and Aboriginal use of the land. The document the squatters' attempts to develop the land, and their reliance on Aboriginal labour. In combination with other colonial sources, McKay's observation also suggests extensive pre-colonial use of the back country by Aboriginal people. John Sherlock Willaton was born 1.8.1897 in Sebastopol near Ballarat. In 1916 aged 18 years 8 months he enlisted in the 1st AIF and embarked overseas with the blessing of his employer, even though he had not completed his apprenticeship. He was wounded in action with a bullet wound to the right foot. His family moved from Ballarat to Sunshine in 1917 and when he was discharged in 1918. He joined the Sunshine Harvester Works as a Fitter and Turner. He was promoted to Sub Foreman of the Bolt Shop toolroom where one of his main responsibilities was training apprentices and he remained in that position until his retirement on the 4.8.1961.Contains original signatures of 112 workmates at Massey-Ferguson (Australia) Ltd of John S. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1999, document the demolition of the house at 5 Watt Street, Sunshine. The property had recently been identified as historically significant, as it was once the home of H.V. McKay employee John Thomas Barcley, who moved from Mildura to Sunshine to work at the Harvester Factory. Jessie Irene ROWE, daughter of John ROWE and Annie (nee PATERSON), married Joseph McKay ABERDEEN (a Technical School teacher) at Orbost in 1918. Her father was one of the first vestrymen of St James Church of England and her mother was a prominent church worker. It would seem an appropriate time of her marriage for Jessie to receive such a badge at the time of her marriage. John Rowe died 28-9-1920 and it is noted that Annie left Orbost in 1922. (ref. John Phillips) This badge was presented to Miss Rowe by pupils and staff of St Andrew's Church Kindergarten on April 9 1918. Miss Rowe was a Sunday school Teacher and pianist / organist? at the church. The Presbyterian Church in Orbost was officially opened in 1898. For many years the Presbyterian people of Orbost enjoyed the fellowship of the church and the children, in particular, were socially and spiritually involved.
