In this image the woman appears wearing a thick wedding band on her left hand. She has a similar resemblance to Sarah Ann Shillinglaw (nee Kidd) and could possibly be a sister. The only sister that the timeline would fit would be Caroline Fairlie Kidd who married Alexander Kirk Stewart 7 Apr 1885 at Richmond, Victoria. The family then lived at Diamond Creek. Johnstone O'Shannessy & Co Photographers operated from 3 Bourke Street from approximately 1865 through 1885. By 1890 they had relocated to 234 Collins Street.The dress is less tailor made and form fitted which appeared from the mid 1880s suggesting this image is circa 1880-1885. From Victorian Heritage: The single storey mansion house with enclosed glass verandah, Burswood was built in 1853 on a site overlooking the Portland Bay for English born pioneer colonist Edward Henty. John Barrow of Adelaide was the architect for this exceptional Australian regency style residence which he designed as a central block of fine axed basalt ashlar and slate roof (now replaced) with flanking brick wings forming an enclosed rear courtyard. Burswood is the most important early mansion house in western Victoria, being an exceptional Australian regency design by distinguished colonial architect James Barrow. Edward Henty, a member of one of Australia's most remarkable colonial families and the founder of Portland, established the first permanent settlement in Victoria on 19th November 1834, and Burswood is testimony to his success as an early colonist. Henty lived in his mansion for 17 years in a semi-regal state. Burswood has been little altered since completion in 1853. A glasshouse conservatory to the side of the present enclosed verandah was demolished prior to 1895 and the slate roof replaced with iron. Mary Livingstone Howlett (1840-1922) began practising as a country midwife in 1866 in the western district of Victoria. She qualified as a 'ladies monthly nurse' in 1887 and continued to practise as a nurse and midwife until 1920. She began her six months training at the Melbourne Lying-In Hospital. She was known by many as 'Auntie', and her career spanned more than 50 years. Louisa Henty (1847-24) was the eldest daughter of Francis and Mary Ann Henty (nee Lawrence). Following the deaths of her mother and father, she inherited 'Fieldplace' in Studley Park, Kew, and 'Merino Downs' in Henty, near Casterton. Thomas Wilson (1838-1923) was a local councillor in Brighton (in its three phases as Borough, Town and City) representing the central ward over a 57-year period, firstly in 1866-79 and again in 1894-1923. He was elected as mayor seven times, as Borough of Brighton in 1869, Town of Brighton in 1895-96, 1905 and 1912-13, and was the second Mayor of the City of Brighton in 1919. He was also a land speculator and both Wilson and his father William Wilson owned considerable land in the area. William Wilson sold land on the corner of Wilson and Carpenter Streets to the Council for its Town Hall. The Johnstone family were connected with the Craiglea Winery in Sunbury from 1864 to 1883. It was established by James Johnston, the father of Wilfred Henry. The carte de visite, English: 'visiting card', was a format of small photograph which was patented in Paris by photographer André Adolphe Eugène Disdéri in 1854, although first used by Louis Dodero. Each photograph was the size of a visiting card, and such photograph cards, in an early form of social media, were commonly traded among friends and visitors in the 1860s. Albums for the collection and display of cards became a common fixture in Victorian parlors. The popularity of the format and its rapid uptake worldwide were due to their relative cheapness, which made portrait photographs accessible to a broader demographic, and prior to the advent of mechanical reproduction of photographs, led to the publication and collection of portraits of prominent persons. This photograph informs the viewer of the grand ballroom at Rippon Lea homestead in Elsternwick in the late 1800s. One of 33 rooms in this mansion, built for Fredrick Sargood in 1868, the ballroom stood where the swimming pool is currently located. Louisa Jones’ (nee Nathan) love of the 1930s Hollywood style prompted her to demolish the old ballroom and replace it with the swimming pool. She converted Sargood’s billiard room into a ballroom during the late 1930s. Large black and white photograph (now sepia with age) in a ' landscape format' mounted on cardboard.
