This item is a Certificate of Merit awarded to Leslie Arthur Tinker for bravery in risking his life in going to the rescue of passengers on the motor launch "Nestor " on the Hopkins River at Warrnambool On January 09 1921. Leslie Arthur Tinker was 31 years of age at the time of this rescue of passengers from the launch"Nestor". Les Tinker was the third son of Jessie and Frank Tinker. He was caretaker at the Town Hall for many years and lived on site. He was married to Elsie Moore and they had one son Donald born 1928. The sinking of the Nestor claimed 10 lives in Warrnambool that day and was a tragedy for Warrnambool. Two long remaining survivors were Janet Glass Dickson who died in 2011 at 97 years of age and A Mr Jim Russell who was still living in Warrnambool in 2011 at the age of 94.This certificate has strong historical and social significance with strong links to one of Warrnambool's larger families. The event itself was a tragedy for Warrnambool with ten people losing their lives. The award comes from The Royal Humane Society of Australasia and as such is a national recognition. Noted with Sword. This Japanese sword was received by 2/8th Australian Field Regiment at the surrender at Miri, Borneo in 1945. The Regiment served in the Middle East (1940-43) as part of the 9th Australian Division. It's final action was in Boreo, once again with 9th Division. A Japanese Officer's sword. These three items give details of the medical qualifications of Dr William Dixon Saltau. Born in Warrnambool, Dr Saltau (1894-1970) was the son of Hon. Marcus Saltau. M.L.C. and Jean Saltau (nee Anton). The Saltau family had been prominent in Warrnambool affairs since Henry Saltau arrived in Warrnambool in the 1870s and founded the business of Saltau and Son – general carriers, coal, wood and produce merchants and forwarding agents. Marcus Saltau was active in Warrnambool community affairs as Mayor, Chairman of the Warrnambool Hospital Board and a long-serving State politician. William Dixon Saltau was educated at Warrnambool Academy and Scotch College and graduated from Melbourne University in 1918. He worked as a doctor in Melbourne and Adelaide hospitals and in England. He was the Medical Superintendent of the Women’s Hospital in Melbourne for 25 years and was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1947. These items are of considerable importance as they are original documents connected to the medical career of Dr William Saltau. He came from a prominent Warrnambool family and had a distinguished medical career. These are three items belonging to Dr William Dixon Saltau:- Item One: Certificate of Dr William Saltau’s admission to the British Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists – a cream sheet of parchment paper with the stamp of the Royal College and black printed material and three signatures and two ornamental scrolls under the heading. Item Two: Oval cardboard cylinder to hold the certificate. It has one enclosed end and a label on the outside with a British stamp and a typed address. Item Three: A leather bound folder containing 37 pages, 34 of them with details of the medical courses completed at the University of Melbourne by Dr Saltau. The cover has a gold border. This illuminated address was given to H.H.Smith, the Warrnambool Mayor, for his work with soldiers returning to Warrnambool and district during and after World War One. On the same occasion Smith was also given an armchair by the mothers, sisters and wives of Warrnambool returning soldiers. Henry Huntingdon Smith (1857-1941) started his own bakery business in 1885, firstly near the corner of Fairy and Koroit Streets and later building his own shop at the corner of Lava and Fairy Streets (Monaghans Pharmacy today). Smith was one of the most admired men in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century. He was a Warrnambool Councillor from 1918 to 1937 (Mayor for two terms) and served continuously on the Warrnambool Hospital Committee for 39 years. He visited patients at the Hospital twice a week. He took a particular interest in the welfare of returning soldiers and it was said that there was not a returned man or woman whom Smith did not greet on his return to the district. Smith also was a tireless worker for the Methodist Church as an office bearer and a Sunday School teacher. Smith was also Vice President in 1937 of the first Warrnambool & District Historical Society. This document is of particular interest as it is a good example of the type of illuminated address produced during the early years of the 20th century. It also shows clearly the respect and love that Warrnambool people had for Henry Smith, a great volunteer worker in the community. This is a piece of cream-coloured parchment paper with a margin ruled in black ink and handwriting in blue and black ink surrounded by red ornamental scrolls and flourishes. The paper has an address to H.H.Smith and is followed by 74 names and the date (1920). The paper is inserted into a piece of red leather cloth. This has folded edges and an ornamental gold pattern around the front edges and a gold border around the back edges. There are two holes at the top of the folder and these have metal surrounds. The backing folder is rounded at the top edges. ‘Warrnambool, 6th December 1919. To H.H. This item is a photograph album that would have been owned by a person or family in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. In most cases (but not in this one) family photographs would have been mounted in the pages and kept as part of a family’s history. Albums such as this one, with photographs, would then become family heirlooms and treasured as such. They would have been expensive to buy at the time so were the province of the more affluent. This album, in very good condition, is beautiful, aesthetically-pleasing and redolent with the history of earlier times. This album is retained as a beautiful example of the type of photograph album that the more affluent members of society would have owned over a 100 years ago. This is a leather covered photograph album. The cover is brown with ornamental floral scrolls and ornamental gold panels. Some of the gold etching and some of the leather areas have worn away. The spine has ridged gold bands with the gold etching heavily faded. The metal clasp that closes the pages is made of silver (tarnished) and is of a decorative pattern. The sixteen pages are made of heavy stiffened cardboard and have centre cut-outs (to contain photographs). These cut-outs are oval and rectangular (arched at the top) in shape and are outlined in gold. On every second page, the cut-out is decorated with sprigs of flowers delicately painted in colour. The pages are gilt-edged. There are three loose sheets of paper which look to be original backing pieces for photographs. This Bible has a brown leather cover with gold metal scrolls on the corners. There is gold print on the spine and front cover and a gold pattern on the front. As written in the note inserted in the front of the bible ,"This Welsh Bible was brought to Australia by John Morgan and his wife Sarah in 1865. With baby daughter Mary, they settled at Allansford, where John took up land "Acme" farm. Their other children Margaret, Jane, Evan, Lewis and Elizabeth were born there." The Memorial card provides the additional information that Sarah Morgan died July 30th 1906 at the age of 68. The date of the Bible 1864 fits with their arrival in Australia in 1865. The Morgan family have been connected to Allansford from that time. This bible has significance social and historical significance as the Bible was common in many family homes. This one written in Welsh shows the connection between the origins of the Morgan family and their new country. This fire helmet may have been one used in England or one used in the late 19th century and early 20th century in Australia. It was made by Firmin & Sons of England, a firm which was founded in 1655. It supplies military ceremonial buttons, badges and uniforms and brass and pith helmets of various kinds. It is regarded as the oldest manufacturing business operating in England today. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was established in the early 1860s and today has both paid and volunteer firefighters.This helmet has no known local provenance but is retained for display purposes.This is a brass helmet with an oval crown with an ornate scrolled curved piece coming over the crown. There is a decoration of a winged dragon breathing fire and on the front side a torch, an axe and a hose with decorative surrounds. There is a breathing hole at the top of the crown in a petal shape. On the sides are metal medallions holding a chin strap which is adjustable. The edge of the crown has a scrolled band. The front peak is angled with a folded metal edge and the rear peak is a concave shape with a brass screw in the middle. Inside the helmet are 8 screws holding the upper decorative arching piece and a black leather band with eyelets tied together to fir the individual head. This violin was made by Mr Edward Richter who lived in Warrnambool for 78 of his 85 years. he was born 10/03/1853 and was an expert model maker making models of ships. The Warrnambool Museum in 1937 held a model of the Cutty Sark which he had made from timber from the wreck of the Enterprise which was wrecked on Warrnambool beach. Violins were another of of his hobbies.This violin has a connection to Warrnambool through the maker who was a long time resident of the town. It belongs to an era when many people were interested in and turned their hand to making objects such as this.The body of the violin is stained brown in colour with black neck and bridge. The four strings are nylon. The pegs and scroll are timber of a finer grain than the front and back.The tailpiece and end button are black material. The bridge is missing. The stand is rectangular with violin shape cutout, painted in red with a ply backing. Small leather strap on one end. This ledger relates to the original Woollen Mill which commenced trading in 1875 on the site of the Meat Preserving Company. It shows entries from July 1875 which lists the following men as shareholders: James Alexander, William Armstrong, Robert Hood, Anthony Mackenzie, William Ross, William Rutledge, Francis Tozer, Joseph Ware. It operated until 1882 when it was destroyed by fire. This ledger contains details of one of the earliest industries in Warrnambool. It provides the details of expenses as well as the names of the earliest shareholders. This sword was issued to Lt A Chanter of the 4th Australian Light Horse Regiment while serving at Gallipoli. He enlisted as Regimental No 59, was commissioned at Gallipoli and later rose to the rank of Captain commanding a Machine Gun section of the RegimentThe 4th Light Horse Regiment is an ancestor unit of the modern day Regiment. A large journal with hard covers of soft suede leather, brown, with very faded scrolled borders. The internal pages are one week to an opening, marked Diary of Duties and Occurrences at the Ballan Police Station, with the left page for Police Duty and the right page for Horses. District Police Office Sandhurst Court records. October 1857 - October 1858. Brown ledger containing the records of the District Police Office Sandhurst. Cover has linen like covering with suede leather corners and spine. All have decorative scroll and pattern work. Dates written in ink on the spine. Remnants of an adhesive label on the spine. Inside covers lined with red, green and gold patterned paper. Entries include names of judges, solicitors, witnesses, accused and plaintiffs, Each record include descriptions of charges and the rulings. Most of the sittings were conducted by police magistrate Lachlan McLachlan. Notes Philip Barton inherited the book from his father Russell Barton who died in 2002. Russell Barton was a barrister who practised on the Supreme Court Circuit in Bendigo from 1960 - 1975. He was interested in history and it is assumed that he was given the book by the Bendigo Court officials. This private late-nineteenth-century four-wheeled carriage has been built to transport a family or group of passengers with a coachman in the front seat. It can be pulled by one horse, or by two horses if the T-pole is attached. The button fittings along each side of the carriage indicate that a folding roof or hood was once attached. The frame across the front of the carriagewas likely to have been a ‘dashboard’ with a leather or wood covering to prevent water, mud and other particles from splashing onto the passengers. The rear step between the two side-facing bench seats is adjustable to allow for ladies’ long skirts. These rear seats appear to be removable, in which case the carriage could be converted to a wagon to transport goods and equipment. The carriage could have been illuminated by oil or carbide lamps placed into the lamp holders on the sides. The carriage was kept under cover for many years in an open-front sandstone building that also included living quarters and an area that may have been stable. It was at ‘Murweh’ a Warrnambool property at 203 Liebig Street. The home is now Heritage and National Trust Listed and described as a ‘gentleman’s residence’. It was built by James Wotton Shevill in the 1860s. Shevill was a councillor from 1875 to 1878, serving in 1878 as Mayor of the Borough of Warrnambool. Jeremiah Wade lived at Murweh there from 1879-1880. By 1915 F.B. Whitehead and his family were living there, and by 1930 the address was used by Mr T.J. Rome and his family. Thomas James Rome was still using that address in September 1973 after his 100th birthday. It is believed that one of the property’s owners had been an Obstetrician in Warrnambool. The current owner re-told the story that children used to hide in the back section of the carriage and smoke, hidden from the sight of onlookers. He had heard the story from a previous owner.The well-appointed horse-drawn four-wheeled carriage is likely to have first belonged to a local councillor and past Mayor of the town of Warrnambool, J.W. Shervill, whose 1860s city property was the carriage location for many years. The carriage is a rare local example of a town-based lifestyle befitting a prosperous personality of the late 19th century. It adds to the story of Warrnambool's development as a town influenced by the port, wealth gained from shipping and the home place of prominent local people such as the Councillor and later Mayor. The side-facing rear seating is unusual for a passenger carriage. It has the feature of removable rear bench seats, allowing for the dual purpose of a carriage or wagon.Carriage; the Victorian-era horse-drawn four-wheeled open carriage has a coachman’s bench seat across the front and two side-facing bench seats in the rear. There are steps at the front on each side and a centre adjustable step and the back. It has a hinged shaft, two lamp holders and a separate T-pole. The bench seats have padded backrests upholstered in green leather and each has padded armrests at the ends. A rectangular metal frame, likely to have been a dashboard, is mounted across the front of the carriage. It has two inner vertical bars. The carriage's body is painted dark green with crimson highlights on some of the panelling. Decorative oval panels with hand-painted motifs are mounted along the sides. The side panels of the carriage have metal fastener buttons attached. The iron-rimmed wheels have sixteen wooden spokes and copper cuffs on the outside of the hubs, and the rear wheels are higher than the front wheels. Wooden brake blocks are mounted onto the back wheels and are active by a metal lever at the front right side of the carriage. The undercarriage is fitted with leaf springs on each side, mounted from front to back axles. JAMES JOSEPH HIGGINS, was born in Dublin in 1821 and, at age twenty, emigrated via Liverpool in 1841 with his wife Ellen and baby daughter Margarete, on board the 'Intrinsic'. They lived in Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, for some years, where their son James John Clarke Higgins was born in 1850. JAMES JOHN CLARKE HIGGINS moved to Brighton East when he married Ruth Simmonds in 1873. The couple lived on Jasper Rd near the corner of Centre Rd for the rest of their lives, and produced eight children HERBERT JOHN HIGGINS was the sixth child born in 1886, to James John Clarke Higgins and Ruth Simmonds, and grew up in Centre Rd, Brighton East, now Bentleigh. He was renting and working a property on Jasper Rd from the time he was married in 1913 to Victoria Matilda Long, daughter of Charles John Long and Annie Matilda Allnutt. Herbert John bought his property on Jasper Rd in 1921. [Metropolitan Board of works plan 3220, Municipality of Moorabbin, shows that in 1928, Higgins Rd was planned (and probably built soon after). Herbert was a dairyman and market gardener. He bred and milked cows and sold milk, cream, butter and eggs to the locals. He supplied hay/corn to be made into chaff to J L Smith’s produce store. He also leased land from other farmers in the area and helped work their land. c1950 he sold the property in lots, some privately, others to the Municipality. Some lots became part of Hodgson Reserve, Higgins Road, Bentleigh, and another lot, the Bentleigh Bowling Club. Herbert and Victoria, known as Queenie, had five children between 1914 and 1928. The youngest Dorothy, who remembered sitting in this pram and later using it to carry papers, wood, vegetable etc., lived on the property in Jasper Road until her passing in 2016. The Government Gazette of January 18, 1888 advertised the acceptance of a contract of 149 pounds for a "Table for central library, New Law Courts, Melbourne". The table was purchased four years after the Court had moved to the William Street address.The table is not of state significance in its own right, but it is a high quality piece of Australian furniture. A gentleman's chair, gent's chair or grandfather chair is a term usually applied in Australia to a deep upholstered Victorian easy chair, often button-backed and with upholstered arms. The chair generally stood on short cabriole legs and had a 'spoon' or a wide balloon back. The 'show wood', that is, the polished frame, was usually mahogany or walnut, although many examples in Australian red cedar have survived. There are Australian versions of the gentleman's chair, lady's chair and matching settees, usually made from cedar, and occasionally from blackwood. As cedar is a softer timber than walnut, mahogany and rosewood, from which the English versions were made, the carving is usually not as crisp as in the imported version. However, the Australian blackwood gentleman's chair is often difficult to distinguish from a good-quality English walnut example. The Edwardian form of the gentleman's chair is much squarer in outline, with short turned legs and the arms are often supported by spindles. There was sometimes a row of spindles, like a gallery, beneath the top rail. The chairs were frequently upholstered in leather.An item probably made in Australia during the latter half of the Victorian era and is significant as it was made in Australia at a time when furniture and many other household items were imported from either America or England.Armchair: gentleman's armchair of Cedar wood with brown leather upholstery, tacked and buttoned in a crocodile-skin-like effect. The wood is scalloped and carved with a Prince of Wales Feather on the back. The arms are scrolled and carved with an Acanthus leaf design, finished on tulip turned legs.
