By 1914, when Australia joined the war against Germany, there were 23 Light Horse regiments of militia volunteers. Many men from these units joined the Light Horse regiments of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Initially Australia promised four regiments of Light Horse, 2000 men, to fight in the British cause. Although the 'Waler' was specifically bred for the Australian bush it proved a tough, reliable mount in the desert battles in the Middle East during WW1. Over 130,000 were sent overseas and of these 15,000 served with the Light Horse. Laurie Light was born on May 12, 1938 to parents, Arthur Vernon Light and Nellie Hall. He started work with his father, a sleeper cutter for the Victorian Railways, at the age of 16.
