This miner's right is a copy from an original held by the Old Colonists' Association of Ballarat. The original was glued onto a page in a large album of photographic images of early Ballarat. Recognising their significance the Council of the Old Colonists’ Association had them removed and restored. Captain John Hepburn (7 page document re Hepburn by unknown author titled '' From Sea to Squatting - Smeaton Hill. Unknown date). Born Whitekirk Haddington East Lothean Scotland, 10 December 1803. His mother nee Stewart. Worked for East India Shipping Line. In 1828 at 25 years became the mate on the vessel 'Diaden'. Captain Wilson. As Captain of the 'Alice' in 1830 married Eliza Combes. Alice Elizabeth, 1st child, born the same Year. 1833 a son John Stewart was born and unfortunately died one year later. A third child Thomas was born. He sailed on a steam propelled vessel between Sydney and Newcastle. He later took over the ship 'Ceres' and was expected to run the Board of Directors. Sadly health prevailed. The 'Ceres' struck 'Whale Rock' and sank. Captain Martin was in charge at the time. Mr. J. Gardiner offered and overland to Victoria. Other names are; Mrs Coghill, John Coghill,. From 1851 the Victorian government required all men on Victorian Goldfields to carry a Gold License. The fee was one pound per month, and was payable in advance. There was agitation surrounding the gold license which was thought to be an excessive fee and did not give the bearer right to representation. On 03 December 1854 the gold diggers on the Eureka Lead fought a short battle against the army and police troopers. A few months later a new system of taxing gold diggers was introduced - the Miner's Right. The Gold License c allowed the bearer to 'dig, search for, and remove gold on and from any Crown Lands' within the district specified on the license. The license was not transferable, and had to be produced on demand. This has resulted in most surviving licenses showing evidence of having been folded and kept in a pocket.The Victorian Gold Licence was issued from 1851 until early 1855. Every man on a Victorian goldfield had to carry a valid gold license, so few survived the harsh treatment of being carried around a working goldfield. There was much dissatisfaction about what was thought to be an unfair mining tax (or gold license). On 29 November 1854 Ballarat miners burnt their licenses on Bakery Hill. On 3 December 1854 the Eureka Stockade Battle took place, resulting in the Goldfields Commission. The first Miner's Right was issued in late June 1855, and in July the first Local Courts were elected by miner's right holders. This gold license was issued around one year after the issue of the first Victorian gold license in August 1851, making it a rare early survivor. Two licences, yellow-brown Victorian Gold License No 210, dated May 31, 1853 (a) and a Miner's Right No 20, dated 28 June 1861(b). The Gold License cost one pound ten shillings and for the month of June 1853. It was for Crown Lands within the Loddon District. At the bottom of the license are five Regulations to be observed by the person digging for gold or otherwise employed at the Gold Diggings. It has a crest at the top with a lion and a unicorn. Printed on a circular cnetre piece are the words: Honi so- -al y pense and below the lion, Dieu, in the centre is -t mon and under the unicorn is droit. The Miner's Right No 20, issued by the Colony of Victoria, for the District of Maldon, cost one pound. Across the top is a crest with a lion and a unicorn holding up an oval piece with a crown and a lion on top, In the oval is an illustration with two men and a woman and sailing ships in the background. Around the top of the oval is: Moni s- - qui mal y pense and at the bottom: Advance - Australia. Under the lion is: Dieu et mon and under the unicorn: Droit. The Spring Gully Gold Mining property consists of Gold Mining Lease No. 2986, Castlemaine, of about 21 acres situated on the Emu Reef, in Spring Gully Fryers. There are two shafts, distant about 300 feet from each other. From one of them large quantities of gold were obtained in former years by previous companies. non-fictionA HOMESTEAD HISTORY Alfred Joyce began a pastoral partnership with his brother in the Upper Loddon early in 1844. His reminiscences reveal events of the venture, from the departure from Melbourne with the completion of a roomy homestead, from the threat of bankruptcy, to substantial success within a decade. In writing them, he was not dependent upon his memories; the many letters he had written to his parents in London had eventually been returned to him, and those written between 1851 and his mother's death in 1858 form a continuation of his own narrative. They describe in vivid detail the upheavals that followed the discovery of gold, the transformation of both town and country, the dissolution of the Joyce brothers' partnership, and Alfred's activities as pastoralist, farmer and miller at Norwood on die Bet Bet Creek. In this third edition, for which a much wider range of illustrations is available, an epilogue continues the story of George Joyce at Plaistow and Alfred Joyce at Norwood until both properties had passed into other hands. Domestic tragedy overwhelmed the one, while droughts and mortgages eventually ruined the other. It is a record which, in the words of the American Historical Review, 'would serve as script for a first-class documentary film and deserves high rank, in the literature of pastoral pioneering'. It originated in Hurstville, NSW, on the 4th October 1914 by the then Mr and later Rev Alex Bray. Alex Bray was a Sunday School teacher and spoke to his class of the Knights of the Round Table. In 1917 the Order of Knights was officially recognised by the Sunday School Dept of the NSW Methodist Conference. Courts spread thoroughout Australia. In 1927 the High Court of NSW called for designs for a badge and in 1929 the General Conference of the Methodist Church of Australasia recognised the Order as an approved Organisation. In 1938 the Senior Section was organised into Degrees of Sincerity, Service and Sacrifice; the Junior Section into Pages' Degree with advancement to Esquire. In 1954 the Junior Section was reorganised into two groups: Pages 8 to 11 years and Esquires 12 to 15 years. The Knight's Motto: "Live Pure, Speak True, Right Wrong, Follow Christ the King, else wherefore born?" District Court regalia: Blue collar and gold shield. High Court regalia: Gold collar and purple sheild. General Court regalia: Purple collar and shield.
