Macclesfield is a town in Victoria, Australia, 47 km east of Melbourne's central business district. The locality, which was named after Macclesfield in England, was briefly the scene of mining activities after gold was discovered in Macclesfield Creek in 1865. The Post Office opened on 9 September 1891 and closed in 1974. This book holds outstanding historic significance as it speaks to the development and urbanisation of outer eastern Melbourne. In mapping the terrain of the Dandenong foothills, this surveyor book played a big role in laying the foundations for the roads and suburbs in the area. The record's interpretive capacity is strengthened by its position with a museum dedicated to collecting, documenting and preserving the history of Emerald and surrounding districts. There is strong research potential once knowledge of the techniques used by the surveyor are unlocked, revealing a better understanding of the data.This field book contains comprehensive, handwritten survey data, including measurements and annotations, regarding the shapes, angles and curves of roads in Emerald and surrounding districts. The first entry refers to Macclesfield Rd in Victoria, dated 16 November 1920. Data captured includes back sight, intermediate, fore sight, rise, fall, reduced levels, distance, cross section left and right, as well as general remarks and comments. In addition to this quantitative data, there are also hand drawn diagrams of angles and roads scattered throughout the book. This book of Common Prayer was presented to Ada Watson (born 1882), daughter of Sarah Jane Watson (Stuart) & James Watson at St Hilda's Sunday School in Macclesfield in 1904 when Ada was 12. Ada married George Furbank Wythes in 1923. Sarah Jane Stewart was the daughter of William Stuart and Mary Kirkpatrick. In 1886 James Watson bought 40 acres of what is now Butterfield Wildlife Reserve.This book is significant in its link to the Watson family of Macclesfield and and as an example of Church of England services in 1904.Black Leather bound book, 114x75x15mm. A faded, badly damaged black miniature leatherette antique hardcover book, 355Pp gilt edges, but some are missing at the end. On the front cover and the spine is stamped in gold lettering - Common Prayer. At the bottom of the spine is printed in gold: London. Underneath the title on the front are five symbols in a line, possibly fleur de lis. This small leather bound book was presented to Ada Watson by Mr J. The photograph has a historical significance as Maud Legg-Rowe's connection to Emerald goes all the way back to the 1850s, when her great-grandparents, Sara and James Watson, first came to Australia from England on the ship Whitby. They had eight children; the youngest girl, Emerald Watson, was her grandmother. Emerald married Henry Legg, and they had ten children, including Maud. Maud's first child was David who was born in 1939/40 when she was twenty-three. At forty, she met and married Frank Rowe who was a widow with three children, and they had a wonderful life together.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on matte photographic paper.
