Frank Pywell was manager of the Maffra Sugar Beet FactoryThe Sugar Beet industry was highly significant in the Maffra area for just under 50 years, and led to the construction of the Glenmaggie Weir and the consequent Macalister Irrigation District. This book is one of a number from the private library of the factory manager, and the entire collection of them provides a unique insight into information available at the time of manufacture. Originally written for children and family between 1998-2000. This book of memoirs provides a personal insight to the history of Maffra in the first half of the 20th century.A 296 pp spiral bound book with a green cover titled Like It Or lump It. It was written by Stan Hunt and tells of his and his family's experience of the 1939 fire in which he was caught as a child as well as the sugar beet industry in Maffra where he worked at as a teenager. Presented to Mrs A.M. Foster (husband a director, may have been major shareholder) on occasion of laying of foundation stone at Maffra Sugarbeet Factory in 1897. Representatives of Frederick Barley, who visited the museum in September 2009 believe they have an identical trowelA silver presentation trowel with handle of unknown white compound, in an oblong case. The case is covered in black leatherette/paper, with green satin lining in the lid and black velvet inner base. Engraved to mark the laying of the foundation stone at the Maffra Sugarbeet Factory in 1897 by Mrs A.M. Foster. Much embellished with hand engraving. The WWI war memorial has since been moved to the front of the RSL Rooms/Maffra Memorial Hall. It is now in front of the Library.A first generation black and white photographic print of the Maffra Sugarbeet Factory in more recent years. It shows the front of the factory from the road, with a fence and some telephone lines and the World War I memorial in the photograph. This photo shows a large paddock of beet (sugar beet) growing on a flat paddock, probably on the Snowy River flats. The fertility of the Snowy River flats is legendary. Although almost any crop could be grown, in the early years, because of the poor transport from this remote region of Victoria, only crops that could be stored, usually dried crops such as maize, could be produced. After the railway was constructed to Orbost in 1916, other crops could be produced and send by the Railways to Melbourne. Associated with crops such as sugar beet was the need for a huge amount of hand-labour, particularly for harvesting. Sugar beet was usually sent to a factory in Maffra. This photograph is significant because it is rare, and shows a field of sugar beet growing on the Snowy River flats, Orbost, in the 1930s. It shows the flourishing of agriculture in the inter-war period, and following the construction of the Railway to Orbost.This is a small b/w photograph, printed as a postcard.
