St Albans Railway Station was at one stage the terminus of the suburban electrification service, an honour that it lost to Watergardens Station (Sydenham) in 2002, and subsequently to Sunbury in 2012. With the increase in train traffic, both in suburban electrification service and in the country diesel service, the gates at the St. Albans Railway Station caused significant road traffic delays including causing several fatalities. For many years, the Bendigo train line was one of Victoria's busiest lines thus the boom gates were down for long periods. This created driver frustration, risk‑taking behaviour, pedestrians weaving through gates and cars queueing across the track. The crossing was classified one of Melbourne’s most dangerous crossings and in the 2000's there were three fatalities and over 60 near misses. The level crossing was finally removed in 2016 as part of the Victorian Government Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP).This picture documents the shops that were once located on the west side of the railway crossing on the North side of Main Road West. These photographs are of the St. Albans Railway Station when the electrification of the line terminated at the St. Albans Railway Station. In 1991, the station was located on the city side of Main Road West and the level crossing was still in operational. It wasn't until 2012, when the line was fully electrified to Sunbury as part of the Sunbury Electrification Project. The level crossing was removed in 2016 as part of the Victorian Government Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP).The train pictured is a Hitachi Train, or commonly referred to as the Silver Train. They were Melbourne’s iconic stainless‑steel suburban trains, introduced from 1972 and running until 2014. These trains were the last of Victoria's fleet not to have air conditioning, and by the 2000's, they no longer met contemporary safety and accessibility standards. The Hitachi trains had replaced the Harris trains, also referred as the Blue Train or Bluey. The Harris trains were taken out of service because they contained asbestos. The first St. Albans post office opened in 1888, just one year after the township was established in 1887. At this time, St Albans was little more than a railway station, a handful of houses, and Alfred Padley’s speculative subdivision. The location of the first post office changed over time, from the Railway Station and to general stores. The first record of a post office at this site appears in the 1960 edition of the Sands & Mcdougall Directory. The first St. Albans post office opened in 1888, just one year after the township was established in 1887. At this time, St Albans was little more than a railway station, a handful of houses, and Alfred Padley’s speculative subdivision. The location of the first post office changed over time, from the Railway Station to general stores and to the site on the corners of Main Road West and McKechnie Street. During the 1980's and 1990's, as the commercial centre of St. Albans shifted towards Alfrieda Street, on the east side of the railway line, Australian Post moved its post office closer to Alfrieda Street. To meet the needs of the St. Albans residents, Australia Post moved to a new location closer to the new St. Albans commercial centre. The Self family story begins with two sisters, not the brothers. In 1932, Margery and Edna Self took over Mrs Magee’s confectionery shop on Main Road West. They expanded the business by purchasing Mr Hounslow’s petrol bowser. In 1934, the Self family built a new general store at 18 East Esplanade, St. Albans which became the foundation of the future Self Bros Supermarket. The family lived in a house behind the shop. The name Self Bros & Goddard emerged when Bernice Self married Alfred Goddard in 1947. By 1955, the directory lists Self Bros & Goddard Storekeepers and later in 1960 to 1974 as Licensed Grocers. This marks the shift from a family general store to a major grocery business Later years it became the Festival Supermarket and subsequently the St. Albans SUPA IGA Supermarket. This is a collection of sixteen tourist guides dating from the mid 1970's to 2013. These contain listings of businesses, accommodation, eateries and events in Warrnambool and district. They also include maps of Warrnambool and surrounds, advertising and photographs of various attractions. While mainly covering Warrnambool a small number of the guides cover the South West Region. These directories have mainly been published by the Warrnambool City Council and are a selection of the types of information provided to visitors at the Tourist information centre during this time period.These tourist guides give snapshots of the City of Warrnambool for the years covered and will be useful for research.[.1] An 8 page paper booklet with black printing and a black & white photo of the pond at the Botanical Gardens on the front cover. Warrnambool State School, No, 1743 was opened in 1876. The site in Jamieson St was easy to access from the surrounding areas of Belfast, Woodford, and Allansford roads. It was the main school in Warrnambool, before the development of Primary schools at East and West Warrnambool. A large part of Warrnambool’s children have attended this school over the 140 years it has been in existence.A common item with which a large number of Warrnambool residents would identify. Stained glass window, south wall, main nave (adjacent to the pulpit). The window is a pictorial representation of St Andrew who live to old age. There is a tradition that on being sentenced to death, he requested that he be crucified on a saltire (diagonal cross, see base of window) as he felt unworthy to be crucified on the vertical cross of Christ. Another symbol of association with St Andrew is the fishing net.The Rev. Andrew Peacock, Archdeacon of the Otways, was the fourth Vicar (1906-1912) of the Parish of Warrnambool. He was highly regarded throughout the community and died following a very short illness. His brother, Sir Alexander Peacock, three times premier of Victoria, officially unveiled a tablet on the north-west corner of the Parish Hall complex on Saturday 25th April and attended the dedication of the memorial window on Sunday 26th April 1913. Rev AE Peacock is buried at Creswick cemetery, Victoria.

This is a set of 23 photographs of surveyors and support staff in the field undertaking tasks in New Guinea 1956 – 1957. The surveyors were employed in the establishment of mapping and geodetic control for Project Cutlass, the “Ship-Shore” survey of the New Ireland province. In this survey operation surveyors used theodolites to observe horizontal and vertical angles and chains to measure base line distances between survey stations. Bob Skitch shown in photo .7P was in the 2nd year of his career in the Australian Army. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, and his last appointment was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1976 to 1980.This is a set of 23 photographs of surveyors and support staff in the field undertaking duties during Project Cutlass located in New Ireland, New Guinea 1956 – 1957. Many sawmills operated in Gembrook in the forest to the east from early colonial settlement days. The opening of the narrow-gauge train line in 1900 assisted the expansion of this industry. This postcard is circa 1900s. This and other postcards and photos came from the estate of David Moyle (1938-2015) who was a police officer in Emerald during late 1960s-early 1970s, and subsequently at Belgrave in the early 1980s. David Moyle was closely associated with the now defunct Sherbrooke Historical Association.This postcard is significant because of its evocation of Gembrook's early timber industry. it is also part of a collection belonging to a community member who had a close association with a local historical society.Sepia postcard with rounded corners featuring photograph of unmade Main Road in Gembrook. This photograph appears to be taken from a hill. While Main Road and Monbulk Road are both in Monbulk, the reference to Madigan's abattoir indicates that the annotations are more likely to be referring to Main Street and Emerald-Monbulk Road in Emerald. It's difficult to determine whether the annotation means it is taken from Main Street or looking down to Main Street, but the absence of buildings in this relatively recent photograph indicate that it is likely the former. It could have been taken from Main Street, looking down at Madigan Way and the undeveloped land behind it. However, it is difficult to confidently assess any of this information, as it is to determine when this picture was taken.The photograph likely captures a unique perspective on an area of Emerald that has since been transformed by time.A black and white picture printed on glossy photograph paper.
