Came into donor's possession some time ago. When the band was due to sale for the UK , the treasurer absconded with all the monies and the tour was cancelled. Hence the unused letter. Subsequently, William Partington conducted bands Australia- wide. He played the euphonium excellently. Donor is the niece of William Partington Letter from Dame Nellie Melba whilst in Sydney to Sir Daniel Godfrey, Bandmaster in England. This was to introduce the donor's uncle , William Partington, who was conductor of the Australian Imperial Band. Letter handwritten in black ink on cream peper. Address and telephone numbers printed at the top of the letter. Mr Hughes was responsibile for maintaining and tuning her piano while on tour in the USA and AustraliaJohn Charles Hughes was born in 1882 of Scotish- Irish ancestry . He was a graduate of the New England Conservatory od Boston where he studied classical music and piano. In 1926 John Charles Hughes' wife died of cancer leaving a daughter Dorothy (who is the wife of the donor). He was unable to continue his work after the death of his wife and after a bout of alcoholism disappeared and was never seen again. Silver cigarette case with textured horizontal lines on outside surface and engraved monogram in centre. Hinged lid and clasp at one end. Dame Nellie Melba was born Helen Porter Mitchell in 1861 and took the stage name of Melba after her home town of Melbourne. Dame Nellie went on to become one of the most successful and highly regarded sopranoes of the late 19th a nd early 20th centuries. She had a number of Farewell tours as she neared the end of her career. When Dame Nellie Melba was a house guest of Miss Florence Lake at "Lyndoch" Warrnambool during her farewell tour in 1927. The bag was purported to have been given to a house maid in recognition of favours done. An item owned by Dame Nellie Melba............ Five Australian Christmas Carols was written by John Wheeler and music by William G James. William James came from Ballarat and John Wheeler was from Colac. James was a concert pianist who graduated from the Melbourne Conservatorium. He went to London and played the Proms and wrote a series of Australian themed songs for Dame Nellie Melba. He became the first Federal director of Music for the ABC until 1957. It was at the ABC that he met Wheeler a staff writer who wrote verse and songs. These five carols which have a distinct Australian flavor, were written between 1848 and 1957.While this collection has no direct link to Warrnambool, the works contained in the collection Five Australian Christmas Carols would have social significance as the carols would be familiar to a number of people. David Mitchell was born near the town of Forfar, Scotland, became an apprentice to a stone mason and builder, then emigrated to Australia in 1853. In Melbourne, he set up a builder's yard in Burnley St, Richmond and later bought Cave Hill Limestone Quarries in Lilydale and manufactured the cement in Richmond. He became Shire President for Lillydale in 1883. Also he established a brickworks in Burnley St, Richmond. He was responsible for building PLC College in East Melbourne, Menzies Hotel, The Exhibition building and Scots Church. Believed to be Percy Leason’s tribute to famous singer, Dame Nellie Melba, operatic soprano who died on 23 February 1931. The black and white drawing shows two men beneath a pedestal and sculpture of a head with the words “MELBA. A GREAT AUSTRALIAN”. Percy Leason (1889 - 1959) was a painter and cartoonist renowned for his depictions of Australian society in the 1920s and 1930s. He lived in Eltham from about 1924 to 1938 when he moved to the USA. In 1931 his cartoons were published in the Melbourne weekly magazine “Table Talk”, usually a whole page on page 8 or 9. (although it cannot be confirmed that this one was). Dame Nellie Melba, born Helen Porter Mitchell (1861-1931), was the first Australian to gain international fame as an opera singer and one of the best-known singers in late Victorian times. She took the name ‘Melba’ from her home town, Melbourne. She sang in Warrnambool on at least two occasions, staying at local homes, including ‘Summer Hill’, belonging to the Murray family and ‘Lyndoch’ as the guest of Florence Lake. In 1927 she sang at the Warrnambool Town Hall with three other assisting artists and this programme records that event. The Warnambool and District Historical Society has an evening bag that was given by Nellie Melba to Miss O’Donnell, a maid at ‘Lyndoch’ at that time. This programme is of considerable significance as it is a memento of the occasion in 1927 when the famous Australian opera singer sang at the Warrnambool Town Hall during her farewell tour. This is a cream-coloured sheet of paper folded into two to make four pages. The front cover has a decorative border and blue printing and a Warrnambool & District Historical Society stamp and the back cover has an advertisement. The middle pages contain blue printing. Hugo Wertheim (1854–1919) arrived in Melbourne in 1875. He became a successful agent for sewing machines manufactured by his father’s cousin Joseph Wertheim in Frankfurt, Germany. Hugo married Joseph’s daughter Sophie Emilie and they settled in Melbourne. Hugo made many trips back to the main factory in Germany and, with extensive advertising, established a thriving business for sewing machines, bicycles, pianos under various ‘brand names’ - Wertheim, Electra, Planet, Griffin, Hapsburg. It has been said that Dame Nellie Melba preferred a Wertheim piano for her performances. In 1908 Hugo opened a large piano factory in Bendigo St Richmond, Victoria. His son Herbert maintained the business until the factory closed in 1935.The pioneer settlers and market gardeners of Moorabbin Shire had to be self reliant and made their own clothing and utensils. This sewing machine was one of many items they used to exhibit the skill and craftsmanship of the women in these families. Although the name of the Mayor and Mayoress, and the year of the invitation are not stated, the fact that music was provided by 'Miss Gertrude Emily Johnson' provides a possible clue as to the date. Gertrude Emily Johnson (1894-1973), coloratura soprano and theatre administrator, was born on 13 September 1894 at Prahran, Melbourne. She was a student of (Dame) Nellie Melba at the women's singing school that Melba founded at the Albert Street Conservatorium, East Melbourne (later the Melba Memorial Conservatorium). The date specified in the invitation, Thursday 19th December, indicates that the event was either in 1918 or 1929. As Gertrude Johnson moved to London in February 1921 and returned to Australia in 1935, when she retired from her singing career, it appears likely that the invitation to the mayoral dinner was for 19 December 1918.
