These 17 books date between 1913 and 1948 and form part of the Emerald Museum Nobelius Nursery sub collection. There are no other examples of this type from Nobelius Nursery in Australia. Yarralumla Nursery, Baptist Nursery and Yates Seed Merchants collections appear to hold similar information but in slightly different formats.Sales Ledgers were used by Carl Axel Nobelius to hand record Nobelius Nursery stock sales to clients in Victoria, interstate and overseas. There are hundreds of clients listed in these books. These Victorian-era obstetrical forceps are from the collection of equipment used by Dr William Bottomley. Dr Bottomley was born in Fitzroy in 1881 and obtained a Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Melbourne in 1906. He lived in South Yarra with a weekend log cabin called Forest Lodge in Emerald and practiced in Collins Street in Melbourne. In the 1920s Dr Bottomley and business partner W.H. Treganowan initiated the Emerald Country Club syndicate to purchase land from Carl Axel Nobelius' Gembrook Nurseries estate, which led to the formation of the golf course and Country Club facilities. Bottomley Drive in Emerald is named after Dr Bottomley; the street is located near Silver Birches, the house commissioned by the doctor from modernist architect Harry Norris. 'Action traction' obstetrical forceps were invented by Dr Robert Milne-Murray, a practicing physician at the Royal Maternity and the Simpson Memorial Pavilion in Edinburgh in 1891. They were designed to allow the attending physician to obtain a secure hold on the infant before pulling backwards on the handle to facilitate the baby's birth. Forceps to extract fetuses from women who would otherwise die during complications in labour have been used as a last resort since 1500 BCE, though it has only been in the last 300-500 years that forceps design has shifted to focusing on saving the lives of both mother and infant. These are fenestrated forceps, with a hollow 'blade' or loop, which have been superseded as a design by solid models that are less likely to cause compression damage to the baby's head.These items are significant as they provide insights into medical practice in the early Twentieth-Century in Melbourne and surrounds. They are also significant because they were used by Dr William Bottomley, who owned property in Emerald and whose business dealings significantly shaped the development of the town.The silver-coloured item is approximately fifteen centimetres long; it has a solid metal handle bar and a stem leading to a flat panel with two holes that are designed to connect it to the body of the forceps. These forceps are from the collection of equipment used by Dr William Bottomley, who practiced in Collins Street in Melbourne after receiving his Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Melbourne in 1906. Dr Bottomley had a weekend residence in Emerald. In the 1920s Dr Bottomley and his business partner W.H. Nobelius Nursery sales catalogues are held in other collections in Australia; however VEMU924.16 is the only example of its type and year that retains components important for illustrating the publication’s purpose. The sale catalogues are the largest and most complete collection of Nobelius Nursery sales catalogues in Australia, with a total of 16 examples dating to between 1898 and 1939, all held at the Emerald Museum. The catalogues have a high degree of interpretive potential for its aesthetic merit, the volumes illustrate demand for different plant specimens in the nursery industry over several decades.The sale catalogues are of historic, artistic and scientific (research and horticultural) significance. It was produced and distributed by Carl Axel Nobelius of Nobelius Nursery, contributing to understandings of how Nobelius’ client networks were expanded and maintained by promotional activities. The catalogues also demonstrates the integrity and reliability of Nobelius as a distributor who actively engaged with his clients, evidenced by an open letter within VEMU924.16 which states “…if I make a mistake I will replace the planting”. The catalogues therefore contribute to understandings of how the Nursery gained its success. This sales catalogue was developed by Carl Axel Nobelius to market the variety of nursery stock he had for sale. It was printed by D. W. Paterson Co, a printing firm based in Melbourne, and then distributed widely both interstate and overseas. This particular copy was owned by Gus Ryberg, past Nobelius Heritage Park curator between 1983 and 2000. Gus donated this issue to the Museum, where it is enjoyed as part of a larger set of illustrated sales catalogues. This example is one of the 16 such illustrated sales catalogues in the Emerald Museum collection. They date between 1898 and 1939 (1898, 1903, 1906 x2, 1907, 1909, 1911, 1913, 1918, 1922, 1926, 1928, 1929 x2, 1931, 1933 and 1935). This issue was chosen because it illustrates the nursery sales at the height of its success, just prior to WWI, and is one of the few examples with the tear-away order form and return envelope intact. Other identified examples of Nobelius Nursery illustrated sales catalogues are held at the National Library of Australia (1936 issue), the State Library of Victoria (1934 issue) and the Latrobe University Library (1898 issue). The existence of another 1913 catalogue has yet to be identified in a public collection. All text on the cover is in a red/pink font. The catalogue contains 68 pages of black and white text, as well as colour and black & white image plates. The cards in the album from the period 1907-1917 belonged to Florrie Greatorex nee Darby (daughter of Ben Darby who was the stepson of Emerald pioneer, David Charman of Brookdale). Florrie, born in 1897, spent her early years in WA. Most of the cards are from her grandparents and other family in Victoria. Florrie later married Charles Greatorex who worked for Carl Axel Nobelius of Gembrook Nurseries and lived in Emerald. Carl and Emily Nobelius moved to a sixteen-roomed Victorian mansion called Carramar where over the years they entertained important guests including Dame Nellie Melba and Governor of Victoria, Sir Reginald Talbot. Carramar retains several fruit and ornamental trees planted by Nobelius and much of its original architectural features.This record holds historic significance as it captures the history of agriculture within Emerald and reflects the significance agriculture had on the development and urbanization of Emerald. In 1886, Carl Axel Nobelius purchased 63 acres of land from an original selector in the small settlement, in an area now mostly occupied by the Emerald Country Club. The enterprise was called Gembrook Nurseries, being part of the Parish of Gembrook, but was more commonly known as Nobelius Nursery after its proprietor.This record holds historic significance as it captures the history of agriculture in the 1910's within Gembrook and gives us an idea of the prominence agriculture had on the development of Emerald and surrounding suburbs. The name plate maker was used by a number of Nursery employees, contributing to intangible narratives of how stock at Nobelius Nursery was prepared for transport. It has a high interpretive capacity as an object associated with a tangible, physical process, presenting opportunities for understanding work practices at Nobelius Nursery and nurseries more generally.No similar name plate maker was identified after contact with and/or searches of collections held at National Museum of Australia, Museum Victoria, the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences or the Australian Garden History Society, Victoria Branch. It is a rare example of its type in Australia. The name plate maker is of historic and social significance. It is associated with the Nobelius Nursery, the largest nursery in the southern hemisphere at its peak prior to WWI (Lyng 1927:75), where it was used from the early 1900s until at least the 1940s. The Nursery was renowned for its supply of plants and trees of high quality and reliability; the name plate maker was part of this process by providing imprinted metal labels that did not fade. The object therefore also demonstrates technological advances of the period. The object holds social significance to employees of Nobelius Nursery who used the machine for several decades to prepare stock for transport to clients.This name plate maker has a hollow hardwood rectangle body and stands on four decorative cast iron legs. It has a cast iron top and further cast iron detail on its front and sides. The top detail lists all numbers and letters to be used in the production of the labels (A-Z, 0-9, space, finish, start and - , ‘), and the front detail reads ‘THIS MACHINE IS SOLD FOR USE IN THE UNITED STATES ONLY. PATENTED NOV. 19 1901, NOV 19 1901, NOV 22 1904, JAN 31 1905 PAT. APPL’D FOR’. The side detail reads ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ The inside of the box contains the metal and wooden mechanisms for making embossed metal labels, which are produced inside and then come out the front once printed. Several metal labels remain sitting in the dispensing hollow. This machine is a Roovers ‘name plate’ maker or ‘nameplate’ machine, also known as an ‘embossing machine’ or as in the original patent application as a ‘die press’. It was manufactured from about 1895 by a firm called Roovers Bros Co., of New York, later known as Roovers Bros Inc. Carl Axel Nobelius imported this name plate machine from the USA, indicated by the plate of text at the front, between 1905 and 1915. It is likely that the machine was ordered directly from the manufacturer, as there is no record of the company having had distributors in Australia. The nameplate maker remained at the former nursery site throughout its changes in ownership, until it was donated to Emerald Museum in the 1970s. This machine was used to create metal labels for tree stock at Nobelius Nursery to identify produce, which were otherwise difficult to distinguish as seedlings. According to Syd Jinette, Emerald Resident and ex-nursery worker who used this machine in the 1930s and 1940s, it was used at the nursery since the early 1900s until at least the 1940s, but continued to reside at the site after this time (oral history account held at Emerald Museum).

An original Commonwealth Savings Bank of Australia Depositor's Passbook belonging to the Emerald History Museum. This passbook was issued 15th February 1980 and features UV signature technology.Methods of banking developed significantly between the 1970's and 80s in Australia with the credit card, black light passbook signatures and later the passbook-less card based accounts and EFTPOS. While a very few passbook accounts may still exist, this item is a great reminder of the days before the convenience we now enjoy. Emerald Museum was established as a formal collecting entity in 1969 based at the Emerald Hall, acquiring material by donation from local community members. In 1988 the former Shire of Sherbrooke with the help of State Government purchased the only remaining section of the former C. A. Nobelius & Sons Nursery (VHR place details ID/H2285). By the late 1980s the collection had been relocated to a shed on the former nursery. This collection included written records of the nursery’s operations that had been maintained throughout its ownership by the Nobelius family and L. Linton. However in the damp shed, the collection’s condition deteriorated. The nursery records received extensive conservation treatment to restore their condition and are now held as a complete collection at Emerald Museum. After the Emerald community lobbied extensively for a place to house their local heritage, the Shire agreed to construct a purpose-built facility within the former nursery where it has resided since 1993.
