Newspaper - Newspaper clipping, The Chronicle, New honour for Sister Bullwinkel : one more chapter for war heroine, November 24 1987
... New honour for Sister Bullwinkel : one more chapter for war... honour for Sister Bullwinkel : one more chapter for war heroine ...The article documents Vivian Statham being recognised by the City of Melville Bicentennial Subcommittee of Ex-Service Associations. Vivian was asked to deliver a requiem at the following year's Anzac service, during which a clock tower would be dedicated to those who served in the war. The article is also biographical, detailing Vivian's experiences 45 years before as, while serving with the Australian Army Nursing Service, the ship she and other nurses were being evacuated on was sunk by the Japanese. Vivian was part of a group that survived to make it shore, where they and a group of English servicemen decided to give themselves up to the Japanese. She was one of twenty-one nurses who were then shot, along with the bayoneting of the English servicemen. Vivian survived but ultimately became a POW for the next three and a half years. After returning to Australia Vivian gave evidence at the War Crime Trials in Tokyo in 1946-47. More recently Vivian a member or representative of many organisations and keeps herself busy.A newspaper clipping with six columns of text and a black and white photo of an smiling older woman centred under the title and subtitleww2, wwll, banka island, japanese, sumatra, vivian bullwinkel, vivian statham (nee bullwinkel), 13th australian general hospital, johore bahru, singapore, vyner brooke, vyner brook -

... Two colour photographs of creek crossings, one more... crossings, one more challenging than the other, during the annual ...The Dibb Report into mainland defence of Australia,1986, among other things identified the requirement for protection of key assets in Northern Australia and the possibility of involving Army Reserve (Ares) units in this thus releasing regular forces for offensive operations. Dibb also pointed out that this defined role would result in a huge lift in Ares morale. In June 1988, the 3rd Division (3Div) conducted a Tactical Exercise without Troops (TEWT), Exercise ‘Distant Trumpet’ in the Katherine- Darwin area to study problems associated with defence against low level incursions against Tindal RAAF Base. Exercise ‘Northern Explorer’ followed in October of that year when units of the 3Div including A Squadron 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles sent patrol groups to get a first taste of environment and conditions. Post-Exercise reports had to include recommendations re: health, equipment and adaptation of Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs) in preparation for the new role deploying to Northern Australia. The first deployment by 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles was in 1988. Deployments continued in following years. In September 1993, 3 Troop (Wangaratta) VMR Squadron 4/19 PWLH commanded by Captain Kelvin Robertson deployed to NT. The training began with airfield defence at Tindal followed by a 1000km recon into Arnhem Land in four Landrovers. The troop reported on the conditions of the roads, airfields, bridges (mainly causeways) resources such as fuel supplies in the towns and infrastructure. Each troop taking different route. 3 Troop had the Northern route through Kakadu National park across the East Alligator River to Oenpelli then to Maningrida and Ramangining and south to the Central Arnhem Road and back to Tindal Air force Base. Two colour photographs of creek crossings, one more challenging than the other, during the annual exercise in Northern Territory, conducted by VMR Squadron 4/19 Prince of Wales's Light horse, 1994. -

It is just one of over more than one troughs ...The Bills Cement Trough consists of two parts a large horse trough and a smaller dog, trough which was donated by Annis and George Bills. It is not known whether this trough was donated and installed prior to or after the death of George Bills in 1927. The installation was under taken by The Metropolitan Drinking and Cattle Trough Association which had been set up in England by an English Organisations in 1859 to provide water facilities for both drivers and animals. The Bills drinking trough, corner of Walker and Rennie Streets, Lara, is significant as it forms part of the Annis and George Bills Estate., which was established to provide watering facilities for horses after George's death in 1927. The concrete structure is also a legacy of the days of horse drawn vehicles before cars were introduced. The Billa concrete trough is associated with Annis and George from 1927 who establish a fund in the early 20th century to provide adequate watering facilities for horses and dogs. In 1968 Slawa and Rella met one more time ...This photograph of Slawa and her sister was taken a few months before Slawa and baby Eva left Vienna, in December 1938. They joined Karl in Switzerland. After leaving Europe, she did not see her sister again for 30 years – years which are documented in the many letters held by the Studio, sent over this time. In 1968 Slawa and Rella met one more time in Paris. This photograph documents the important relationship between Slawa Horowitz-Duldig and her sister Rella Horowitz, later Laisne. Rella assisted Slawa in the process of developing her invention of the modern foldable umbrella, and hid the family's artworks and furniture, designed by Slawa and the firm of Sigmund Jaray, in her apartment in Paris during the Second World War. It is of historical significance as it documents life in Vienna prior to the Second World War. -
