This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. From Victorian Heritage Database citation for HO57 Alnwick, 11 Railway Parade Murrumbeena https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/35369 as at 30/10/2020 Alnwick" is situated at no. 11 Railway Parade, Murrumbeena, and was built for Sir James Patterson, former Commissioner of Public Works and Railways and Premier and Chief Secretary at the time. It is historically and aesthetically significant. It is historically significant (Criterion A) as the home of a former Premier and MLA who held a multitude of senior positions during his term of office spanning between 1870 and 1895. These positions included Commissioner of Public Works, Vice President of the Board of Land and Works, Postmaster General, Commissioner of Railways and Commissioner of Trade and Customs and Minister of Railways. Importantly, he held these offices during the period of Colonial expansion leading up to the economic crash of the early 1890s. Once a major junction station between the Port Fairy Line and the branch to Penshurst and Hamilton, the track at Koroit has long been removed. The station has been preserved with heritage funding keeping it looking close to its working condition. In 1903, before the extension to Crowes, Beech Forest Railway Station was the terminus, already 3 roads wide with Station building, outshed, Goods Shed, and three small departmental residences. Emerald Railway Station opened in 1900 with the line that would eventually become Puffing Billy. The station stayed open until 1954, but judging by context such as the clothing of the people on the platform, this image was likely taken earlier. While it's possible this is a crowd gathered for the opening of the station, it is difficulty to prove either way and could also just be a crowd of passengers for the normal operation of the line.This image captures a vital element of Emerald's historical development - the railway.This item is a modern coy of an older black and white photograph. The photo captures a steam train entering a railway station from the left of the frame, greeted by a crowd of people standing on the station platform to the right. The train is partially obscured by a shed on the photographer's side of the tracks, likely with implements for train maintenance. Railway Ticket Dater Edmundson Ticket Dater, made in Britain. Complete with type. Circa 1920 THE TICKET DATING PRESS At the heart of the booking office is the ticket dating press. This is used to print or impress the date on the ticket so validating it for use. These machines were developed by the Edmondson Company in the 19th century and Waterlow also produced similar machines. Even the smallest station had one and larger stations often had dozens. The most common variety in the UK printed the date on the ticket by using printers' type and an inked ribbon. Another variety impressed the date of the ticket with special sharp type. This was specially useful in hot climates where the ink dried out very quickly and also had the advantage of avoiding the use of the ribbon and the need to re-wind and re-ink it. Until 1925 Beech Forest saw three trains or six train movements each day, from 6.50,am until 3.05 pm, and the railway personnel reflected this movement. A Station Master, porter, goods clerk, train crew, engine cleaner and track gang were employed. While economic activity slowed a little bit after this it still remained vigorous for another three years. However, the frequency of goods trains started to decrease from 1926 when the small NA class locomotives were partly replaced by a Garratt engine that had greater hauling power. Three regular train services continued to run each day, two of these being NA drawn and the other a Garratt train.B/W. Locomotive Head Board - Emerald Tourist Railway Board 1977 - 2017 40 Years Historic - Puffing Billy Railway Locomotive Head Board used in the Celebration of Emerald Tourist Railway Board 1977 - 2017 40 Years EMERALD TOURIST RAILWAY BOARD 1st October 1977 - 1st October 2017 Today marks the 40th anniversary of when the Emerald Tourist Railway Board took over the ownership of Puffing Billy from the Victorian Railways. Since then Puffing Billy has gone from strength to strength with the last few years seeing a huge increase in passenger numbers. A major investment over the next ten years will see a number of infrastructure projects being completed. A new (restored) locomotive and extra carriages will come into play and hopefully soon, the reopening of Puffing Billy's museum at Menzies Creek. Puffing Billy has been around since 1900. With a minor hiccup in the 1950s and the rebuilding of the railway from Belgrave from the late 1950s to the early 1960s and onwards, the preserved heritage steam railway will hopefully continue to operate for many generations to come. This photo was taken early this morning. The required loco's for the day were still being prepared and all shunting movements had been completed. The first of many passengers were just starting to arrive. Photo & Info : Robert Smith : Past 2 Present A gleaming NA locomotive 14A had the honour of hauling the first E.T.R.B. train while 7A had the last train by the Victorian Railways, both on the 1st October 1977. 7A left Belgrave at 11.10am for Lakeside and 14A left Belgrave at 2.10pm.This train also to Lakeside included the ex Mt Lyell carriage NBL1 for the conveyance of the official party. The Serviceton Railway Station was completed in 1889 , with the Colony of Victoria and the Colony of South Australia sharing the cost. Ut was at Serviceton the the Victorian rail line and the Adelaide-Wolseley railway line of South Australia joined. The Railway Station included customs offices which were no longer necessary after the Federation of Australian States in 1901. Carrol Preston has used newspaper references from 1877 through to 1917, to document the history of the Orbost - Bairnsdael railway line.. It starts with the lobbying and jockeying, and moves through to the opening in 1916. The title is a reference to plans to further extend the railway beyond Orbost - but "The Iron Horse stopped at Orbost Railway Station". Most articles are from the Snowy River Mail and Bairnsdale Advertiser. All newspaper articles are dated and sourced. About 1912 work began at Newmerella on clearing the track for the railway line from Bairnsdale to Orbost. A canvas town sprang up on the higher land adjacent to the river flats. Local farmers supplied meat, milk and fresh produce to the camp, as well as gaining employment carting and labouring. The line opened in 1916, the Orbost railway station being built on the Newmerella side of the river.This item is associated with the history of the Orbost-Bairnsdale railway line and therefore reflects the role that the rail line played in the social and economic history of Orbost. On April 10 1916, the first scheduled train service left Orbost for Bairnsdale. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened to serve the agricultural and timber industries. This book has been compiled by a local historian. A spiral bound book titled, "The Iron Horse Stopped at Orbost Railway Station". The cover is blue / green with the title in black and red print. Underneath is a railway track leading to the bottom of the page. Stratford railway station is located on the Bairnsdale line in Victoria, Australia. The railway lined opened on 8 November 1887 it served the town of Stratford. The building at the Stratford Railway Station was opened around 1921 after the original building was destroyed by fire on 10 January 1920. "STRATFORD RAILWAY STATION. Mr. M'Lachlan, M.L.A., has received the following from Mr. Norman, late Chairman of the Railway Commissioners:-"In reply to yours, I beg to state that material for the new Stratford railway station has been ordered, and the work will be put in hand as soon as it has been delivered. It is not an easy matter at the present time to obtain materials, and I cannot say exactly when those required will be received." (Gippsland Times, 27 September 1920) Until their demolition, Munro, Fernbank, Lindenow and Hillside stations were located between Stratford and Bairnsdale stations.
