Victoria Market is always a busy location for traffic beginning before dawn five days a week. This photo at approx 8am shows some of the many trucks, vans and motor vehicles on Peel Street outside the market during the morning peak hour. Traffic congestion that held up trams was a long time concern for the M&MTB since the 1920s. Photographs that illustrated this were often produced for the Board. W2 277 shows a destination of 'Toorak-Glenferrie Road route 8' and has likely come from West Coburg terminus. It was common practice in peak hours to through-route West Coburg cars to several south suburban termini to ease tram traffic on St Kilda Road and to reduce congestion caused by trams turning back from city locations. Other southern termini included St Kilda Beach and Carnegie. The M80 Western Ring Road is one of Melbourne’s most important transport corridors, a 38 km freeway built between 1989 and 1999 to link the western and northern suburbs, relieve freight congestion, and stimulate industrial growth. St Albans Railway Station has one of the most layered histories of any suburban station in Melbourne’s west, beginning as a speculative land‑development stop in 1887, rebuilt in 1959 to ease traffic congestion, modernised in 2002, and finally transformed into a below‑ground station in 2016 as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project. Main Road East, formerly Boundary Road, served as the municipal boundary between the City of Sunshine and the City of Keilor. The south side of the roadway fell within the City of Sunshine, while the north side belonged to the City of Keilor. Following the statewide restructuring of local government in 1994, both sides of Main Road East were brought under a single municipality, the newly formed City of Brimbank. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1990, were published in response to a campaign by St Albans traders who were concerned about growing traffic congestion in the centre of St Albans and the resulting loss of business to competing shopping centres such as Deer Park, Keilor Downs, and even Highpoint City.Although Main Road East was administratively divided between two councils, the community on both sides of the road functioned as a single, integrated community. Major institution, including Errington Reserve, the principal St Albans sports ground, St Albans High School, and St Albans Statio, were all located on the south side within the City of Sunshine, yet they served residents from both councils. Photograph shows the laying of a new northern exit/entry road for Essendon Depot. Grooved tramway rail and turnouts are in place supported by timber sleepers. Part of the footpath and a section roadway on Mt Alexander Road are excavated for these works. Three workmen in civilian clothes are tightening tie bars; W2 class tram 552 has cleared the new works bound for Essendon Aerodrome route 59 with weather blinds down; three motor vehicles are shown in the distance, two with the distinctive shape of a Holden. The high fence and tennis court opposite the depot are part of a Catholic convent and teachers college. Records suggest the date is September 1960 when the single northern exit/entry track to the southbound line was replaced with this double track. Until this time, a separate crossover provided a connection to the northbound line. This new arrangement meant that trams running out or in from the northbound track no longer had to negotiate a crossover, thus reducing motor traffic congestion. The obsolete crossover was removed. It is likely that in the following days mass concrete was used to rebuild the roadway. As tramway rail with a flangeway was no longer produced in Australia from the 1960s, railway-type rail without a flangeway was used instead and the flangeway provided by a groove in the concrete. \When the railway reached Wodonga from Melbourne on 19th November 1873 the first station building, which included a refreshment room and dining room, was a temporary structure. It was 300 ft. long and was removed and taken to Beechworth when the new station was built in 1874 by contractor J. Richardson. The Goods shed was 100 feet long and was built by Frew & Hill in 1873. One year later it was extended an additional 150 feet by James Nation. The date of the construction of the Locomotive shed is not known but predates 1883. It was a galvanised iron clad building which housed 4 engines on 2 tracks; in 1910 it was extended to 250 feet in length to house six more engines. The location of the railway tracks and station were a constant cause of congestion in the centre of Wodonga as the tracks crossed over Sydney Road (later named High Street). Lines of traffic were frequently banked up as the gates were closed to allow trains to cross. The Wodonga Rail Bypass project moved Wodonga station from the original central location to a position on a new line on the northern edge of the town. Not only did this release land in the middle of the city for commercial and public use, but also eliminated 10 level crossings. The project actually commenced in 2008 with the last passenger train passing through Wodonga on 8 November 2008. On 23 July 2010, the new rail bypass was opened, the original line through Wodonga closed and the station fell quiet.
