This collection of 20 photos was most likely taken in 1980. The AUTOMAP 1 computer assisted cartography and mapping system was introduced in 1975. The components of AUTOMAP 1 were the Input Sub-System of four Wild B8s stereoplotters and three Gradicon digitising tables, the Optical Line Following Sub-System – Gerber OLF, the Verification Sub-System – Gerber 1442 drum plotter, the General Purpose Sub-system – HP21MX computer and the Output Sub-System – Gerber 1232 flatbed plotter). The first map was published in 1978 (Strickland 3665-3, 1:50,000). AUTOMAP 1 was the first computer assisted cartography and mapping system utilised by the Survey Corps and was the first system used by Australian mapping organisations. This is believed to be a photograph of Cartographic Squadron, one of the Army Survey Regiment’s squadrons at Fortuna, Bendigo. It was probably taken on Corps Day in July 1985 as its members appear in winter dress. Cartographic technician tasks undertaken by Cartographic Squadron at that time were scribing, compiling, retouching, masking, type setting, type stickup, terrain embossing, correcting and proving quality control. This set of 36 photographs were taken at a Corps Day Parade held at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo on the 1st of July 1987. The Parade Commander was CO LTCOL Don Swiney MBE, and the Reviewing Officer was the Colonel Commandant (honorary appointment) of the Survey Corps - COL Clem Sargent (Retd). The Corps Day Parade was held to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. It was an occasion for great celebration at the Regiment. After 45 years in Bendigo, its future was finally secure. At the traditional anniversary parade, the Colonel Commandant COL Clem Sargent praised the efforts of the Regiment and led the soldiers in three cheers for the record production of the previous 12 months. These 17 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s map production and facilities were taken at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo, April 1986. Photos .1P to .3P were taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Correcting Section in the Attic. located on the top floor of Fortuna Photos .4P to .5P were taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Proving Section, located in the Ballroom also on the top floor facing the lake. The technicians were probably involved in a rapid response map production, as they all were wearing field uniforms. As ‘Regiment Overcrowding’ is annotated on the plastic sleeve holding the negatives, it seems the photos were taken when the unit was at its capacity to demonstrate the lack of suitable work areas. The Army Survey Regiment’s Duty Room, RAP and Carpark appearing in Photo .10P was probably taken from the top steps near the SGT’s accommodation block. This set of 30 black and white photographs were taken at the Army Survey Regiment’s parade rehearsal held at the Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo on the 27th of June 1985. The rehearsal was for the Freedom of Entry parade held 1-2 weeks later in 1985. The exact date for the Freedom of Entry parade is not known. The Freedom of Entry to the City of Bendigo was an honour first conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. The Freedom of Entry parade in 1985 was the fourth time the unit exercised its right of freedom of entry. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980 and 1995.
