The initial excitement of those who bought new silverware, however, soon turned to disappointment because the commonly used mercurial silver polish ate away the thin-layer of silver-plate. ...Container of Goddard's Plate Powder for polishing silverware...The initial excitement of those who bought new silverware, however, soon turned to disappointment because the commonly used mercurial silver polish ate away the thin-layer of silver-plate. ...1813 Joseph Goddard was born in Market Harborough, Leicestershire in1830s and he always held a deep appreciation for beautiful silver. As a chemist and county analyst in Leicester, J. Goddard was frequently called upon to assay fine silver owned by England's wealthy families. Joseph Goddard's career altered when, after the discovery of electroplating, silver-plate became affordable to the average English home. The initial excitement of those who bought new silverware, however, soon turned to disappointment because the commonly used mercurial silver polish ate away the thin-layer of silver-plate. Joseph Goddard was sure that there must be a way to clean tarnished silverware without spoiling the finish then In 1839, and after many unsuccessful attempts, he finally perfected a silver polish that would safely remove tarnish from even the thinnest plated silver. Goddard's Non-Mercurial Plate Powder was introduced and the fame of Plate Powder quickly spread. Goddard's powder became so much in demand that it was soon marketed through other retailers. In 1877 Joseph Goddard died, and his son, also called Joseph, joined the business, followed, in turn, by his son and grand son. All of them expanded the business to produce a range of other polishes. 1885 Goddard's products won six gold medals for excellence at the American Exposition. An interesting history for an everyday item that even today is in use around the world and that we take for granted. The item gives a snapshot into how a product can be developed by shear perseverance by someone who believes there must be a better way of doing a particular task. However this example of Goddard's polishing powder container cannot be associated with an historical event, person or place.Container of Goddard's Plate Powder for polishing silverwareGoddard's Plate Powderflagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, goddard's plate powder, goddards, silver polishing -

The box has a gilt metal clasp for closing the box. The box is lined inside with purple satin material and contains five electro plated nickel silver teaspoons. There should be six in the set but one spoon is missing. The spoons are held in grooves cut into a purple block across the middle of the inside of the box (perhaps made of wood). ... ...SIlverware...Domestic items SIlverware On back of spoon: "RODD 18 - 8" A silver sugar spoon produced by Rodd, Silversmiths from Melbourne, Victoria. ...This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scots Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had four daughters – Frances (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved from Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. Rodd was an Australian company which was established in Melbourne by George Rodd in 1919. The early name of the company was G & E Rodd, and it made a large selection of jewellery and flatware. By the late 1930's they had become the leading manufacturing jewellers in Australia. Their items were marked with their trade name Apex. When the firm became a public company in 1948 the marking of their wares was changed to Rodd. The company became well known for its high-quality flatware or cutlery. This determines the provenance of this spoon as being c1950..A silver sugar spoon produced by Rodd, Silversmiths from Melbourne, Victoria. Melbourne WaterSouvenir tea caddy spoon "Tea Time", Early 1960s
... Tea caddy spoon box labelled 'Fine Silverware by Stokes'...Tea caddy spoon box labelled 'Fine Silverware by Stokes' Souvenir tea caddy spoon "Tea Time" ...Melbourne Water inherited many of its water assets, such as reservoirs from its predecessor the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW). They have served the organisation well and have long been celebrated for both their natural beauty and engineering ingenuity. In the nineteenth century Victoria’s fundamental need for water infrastructure went beyond merely functional solutions and reflected the English ideal of the romance and beauty that was embodied in expanses of water. The MMBW further enhanced this notion by incorporating beauty and function in to the Classical and Italianate designs of its infrastructure such as pumping houses and reservoir outlet towers. The reservoir gardens and picnic areas were landscaped with ornamental stonework, exotic trees, decorative flower beds, fern glads pools and rose gardens. All features of the water supply system became widely celebrated as beauty spots that continue to be very popular to this day with tourists and locals alike. This souvenir is a product of that flourishing tourist trade. These water supply sites continue to enhance Melbourne’s charm and liveability and are now recognised as places of cultural and historic significance This souvenir item has been curated by Melbourne Water as it represents an important historical aspect of the organisation by demonstrating the popularity of its water asset sites as recreational places and tourist attractions, and although these sites are functional parts of the water supply system, they were also designed to be enjoyed by the public both aesthetically and recreationally. ... In the 1930s, they began to produce ornate silverware, predominantly flatware which capitalised on the High Tea elegance of the time, and children's silverware. ...In the 1930s, they began to produce ornate silverware, predominantly flatware which capitalised on the High Tea elegance of the time, and children's silverware. ...George Rodd and his brother Ernest established G. & E. Rodd as a manufacturer of silver goods in the 1920s. Initially, they produced popular small accessories such as collar pins and bangles before expanding in the mid-1920s to create more complex items such as rings, broaches, and cufflinks. In the 1930s, they began to produce ornate silverware, predominantly flatware which capitalised on the High Tea elegance of the time, and children's silverware. Much of their silverware was EPNS—or electroplated nickel silver—and identified with various embossed markings. They steadily expanded over the next decades, with a slight dip in production during WWII, and merged with Platers Pty Ltd. in 1949, gaining them access to the 'Hecworth' name. This plain serving spoon is larger than most everyday utensils as it was likely used to serve smaller portions of a communal meal. The spoon's bowl is worn away at the top-left edge, indicating that it may have been used as leverage to frequently to open sealed jars or tins. It is also missing several of the markers which would easily identify it as Rodd silverware, such as the APEX mark, or an A1 label. This item is significant as it is an example of a well-loved and regularly-used utensil from an everyday home. Its wear is indicative of the way it was used on a regular basis, and how similar utensils may have been used in other homes around the area. This silver spoon has a deep, slightly misshapen bowl that is tarnished by a great deal of scratches and marks. The bowl's edges are also slightly bent and warped. The handle extends slightly over the bottom of the bowl, narrowing at the neck before widening at the base of the handle. There is a small engraving on its underside.Rear, base of handle: "GROSVENOR PLATE EPNS" Rear, base of handle, sideways: "A"20th century, domestic life -
