Tramways VR Victorian railways power supply Electrical Switching Electrical engineering St Kilda Brighton Tramway Elwood Depot Has numerous pencil inscriptions that updated the drawing to c1957 and a "Cancelled" stamp in the bottom right hand corner. Drawing dyeline print and hand coloured with a cloth back sheet with two punch holes on the left hand side to enable filing. "Sectionalizing Diagram - St Kilda - Brighton Beach ...Drawing shows the power supply arrangement to the overhead for the VR St Kilda Brighton tramway, including Elwood depot and substation. Has been marked up for removal of the line south of Elwood Depot to Brighton and Dickens St crossover. Shows the isolating and paralleling switches and their pole numbers. Not known when the original drawing was prepared. The tramway or electric street raikway operated from 1906 to 1959, the section south of Elwood depot closing in two stages during 1956. The man speaking is likely Premier Thomas Bent (later Sir Thomas). One tram is a combination car; the other an open cross bench trailer car carrying a brass band. These and most of the new fleet would be destroyed in the depot fire in 1907. Retains original colour scheme of chocolate, cream and read. Served its last days as a breakdown tram confined to Elwood depot. Built by Pengelley & Co of Adelaide in 1913, entered service between May and July 1913. Number 20 served for 5 years until the toastrack design became obsolete and it was replaced. Conductor had to move along narrow running board and enter compartments from the outside to collect fares 5 mile journey took 29 minutes Trams had gas-light fittings made of brass and displayed notice to occupants: "Please hand as nearly as possible the exact fare to the conductor. Charman Road runs from Nepean Highway , Cheltenham through Beaumaris to the Beach Road at Mentone. Mr Les Jones was the Great Grandson of Mary Ann Charman pioneers early settlers dendy henry charman mary ann jones les cheltenham moorabbin brighton ...Mary Ann Charman was a pioneer settler in the Cheltenham area of the Parish of Moorabbin c1850 Stephen Charman , who emigrated in 1942 as a Henry Dendy employee aged 21 years, sadly lost his wife and child shortly after arriving in Brighton. When Dendy could not employ him he found other work. In 1850 he met Mary Gettens a widow with 5 children who supported her family by managing her late husband’s Inn in Collins St. Melbourne. Stephen purchased land in Spring Grove, now Cheltenham, in 1852 and the family moved to the wattle and daub hut after their marriage. Mary and Stephen worked very hard to establish a market garden, poultry and pork farm . They specialised in Marigolds which they sold to Martin & Pleasance Pharmacy , Melbourne for medicinal purposes. Mary and Stephen had 7 more children and Mary still managed to find time to sell the pork, poultry and vegetables from a horse drawn cart she drove around St Kilda. 1857 Stephen donated land to the Methodist Church for a School, burial ground and Chapel in Balcombe Road.
