Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. These buildings held a variety of businesses over many years. The building on the left operated as a butcher shop, but at times was also a cafe and the site of Whitehouse Motorcycles in the early 2000s. The business on the right at various times operated as "The Tuck Shop", a cafe, a milk bar and grocery shop. For a short while in the late 1930's/early 40's it was run by Sister Hughes after she had conducted the private hospital on the corner of High and Stanley Streets in the 1920's to 30's.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.A black and white image of the butcher and tuck shop near St. Augustine's convent, Wodonga.wodonga businesses, high st wodonga

Five swinging bells were installed at Sacred Heart Cathedral in September 2001 and were rung for the first time 30/9/2001. The cast bronze bells were made in France and their eventual size and tones were decided based on the size of the belfry. The bells are each named after a saint; St Liborius, St Augustine, St Patrick, Mother of Good Counsel, and Blessed Mary McKillop.Newspaper article from 2001 written by Monsignor John Duffus, Sacred Heart Cathedral. This collection was generated by Mary Emma Elliot of Talgarno. Talgarno is a rural locality in Victoria, Australia, situated on the southern shoreline of Lake Hume, about 23 km east of Albury-Wodonga. The collection contains postcards from across the world. Mary Emma Sibley was born in Ironbark, Bendigo in 1859. She married James Elliot in 1893 and they settled at “Kelso”, Talgarno. They had two children – Mona and Sibley. Mary Emma Elliot died in Melbourne in 1944, aged 84 years. This church was opened on 15th, September 1872, and was constructed over two years at a cost of 4500 pounds. The bluestone was sourced from Dean. The St Augustine statue is by Mattei Brothers. Mattei Brothers and Co. were modellers and figurine manufacturers at 126-132 Greeves Street, Fitzroy. Ferdinando Mattei, Amedeo Mattei and Amato Mattei were skilled in plaster casting, they migrated from Gromignana to Australia in the early 1920s and in 1926 opened their business.Photographs of the bluestone Catholic church at Creswick, Victoria. Rev. C. P. Schwieger, known as Percy, was vicar at Holy Trinity from October 1934 to 1953. Many Children in Surrey Hills were baptised by him as there was a population explosion following WW2. There is a stained glass window of Mary and Martha with Jesus that he donated to the church in memory of his wife Mary, obit. 6.4.1949. He oversaw many improvements to the church properties over the time when the parish was extending to St Augustine in Balwyn and land was obtained for the church at Wattle Park, now closed. Sister Hughes’ Private Hospital on the corner of High and Stanley Streets, Wodonga operated between 1922 and 1938. The building was constructed as a family home for Albert Schlink, a storekeeper in 1909. The building was first used as a private hospital in 1919 starting with Nurse Eliza Browne. It had six or seven rooms, one of which was an operating theatre. There was a walkway, then three bedrooms and a bathroom that belonged to the hospital all in the one area. A small building at the back served as a self-contained flat. Catherine Josephine Hughes' sister Mabel earlier married into the Schlink family and came from Bendigo to take over the Lease on the hospital in 1922. Apart from Sister Hughes, there were Nurses Poyntz and Costello. Three domestic staff were also employed – a cleaner Elsie Enever, the cook Mrs Baker and Mrs Kimball who did the laundry. Nurses Poyntz and Costello took charge of the hospital in 1938 and Catherine Hughes continued to be listed as a nurse on the electoral roll until 1954. In the early 1940s she conducted a business in the “lolly shop” in High Street, south of St Augustine’s Church. The Private Hospital in High Street possibly closed in 1954 with the opening of the Wodonga Hospital in Vermont Street. EWART BROTHERS MENSWEAR In 1954 Clarrie and Jeff Ewart opened their business, Ewart Bros. Menswear in High Street, Wodonga. They united after having worked in separate menswear businesses following schooling at St Augustine’s in Wodonga. Clarrie had worked at Abikhairs and Jeff had his own business after working at Cann’s in Albury. Over more than 40 years in business Ewart Bros. operated from different premises, first in a rented premises at 192 High Street, then their own shop at 180 High Street in 1965. Their second site became known as the 'long shop' as it extended from High Street and through to the Coles supermarket car park. In 1962 they also opened a book shop at 192A High Street, advertising sales of books, stationery, cards and school book orders. Ewart Bros. was put up for auction in November 1995, with Clarrie and Jeff intending to retire. However the business was passed in at auction, so the business continued. On Friday 3rd April 1998 a clearance sale of all shop fittings was finally held, with Ewart Bros Menswear thanking the customers and friends who had supported them over the past 45 years.
